1 Garden Cambridge News September Meeting It was wonderful to see so many people come out to our September meeting and participate in the Garden Challenge. needed to come indoors for the winter. The final Share the Wealth prize was won by Anne Cherwonogrodzky (a.k.a. Anne Cher). Congratulations to all the prize winners. At our September meeting, our speaker, David Hobson regaled us with fascinating stories and beautiful pictures of gardens he has enjoyed during his visits to England. I m sure everyone went away thinking about planning their own trip! October Meeting I would like to extend our thanks to Doreen McMillan and Audrey Anderton for providing the refreshments for the evening. Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 We continued with our Meet and Greet program by having the membership committee (Lynne Goulet-Smith, Debbie Brighton and Connie Boychuk) greet everyone as they arrived and give out name badges. New members and guests were asked to sign a guest book and their names were entered into a special draw for door prizes. We invite everyone to bring a guest to the October meeting. Introduce a friend or family member to our fabulous group and share the interesting gardening information presented by our speaker. They can enjoy coffee, tea and snacks at our social time and join in the fun of our Share the Wealth draw. We added a Garden Challenge feature to the meeting where everyone was asked to bring in an arrangement from their garden to be voted on by everyone attending the meeting. There was a tie for first place between Pat Handorf and Nancy Smith. Congratulations to both. Dave Neale was on hand for another entertaining Share the Wealth prize draw. There were many wonderful prizes including house plants that Guests and new members are eligible to win a prize!! October s meeting will be held at Chartwell Queen s Square Retirement Residence - 10 Melville St. Social time begins around 7pm with refreshments. Bill Brunsveld of Valley Feeds in Cambridge will be speaking on How to Attract Birds. He will be presenting an assortment of bird feed, feeders and houses to give everyone an idea of how to see more birds in our backyards. Don t forget to bring your mug!

2 Special Feature for October Special Feature for November Just a heads up for information on the special feature competition at the November meeting on Monday, Nov. 26. This will give you some extra time to collect materials for your arrangement. The special feature for our October meeting is The Pumpkin Decorating Challenge. Find your favorite pumpkin and paint, carve, embellish and decorate it and bring your creation to the October meeting. The pumpkins will be displayed anonymously, and the people attending the meeting will vote to select the creation they like best. The People s Choice will receive a blue ribbon. The owners of the pumpkin decor will be unveiled after the voting. Anyone wishing to participate in the challenge is asked to bring their pumpkins in at 6:45 so that they will all be on display when people arrive for the meeting. The voting will take place during the social time and the meeting will begin at 7:15 pm. The special feature for our November meeting is Nature s Holiday Arrangement. Collect evergreen boughs, cones, twigs, holly and other plant materials to create your arrangement. Bring your creation to our November meeting. As per the previous meetings, the arrangements will be displayed anonymously and the people attending the meeting will vote to select the creation they like best. Anyone wishing to participate in the challenge is asked to bring their creation in by 6:45 pm so that they will be on display when people arrive for the meeting. January 2019 Meeting Cancelled With the extra work required to organize and hold our Dream Garden Conference in January, it was decided by the board that we will be

3 cancelling our January meeting and will hold our AGM at the February meeting. enjoyed creating a Fall/ Halloween table decoration. And there was excitement in the cottage as they carved, painted and decorated their pumpkins! Check out our website for more Pumpkin workshop pics Ferguson Cottage Gardens Work continues to move forward in the gardens. Thanks to all the volunteers who either helped clean up the gardens and/or moved dirt. We have covered the long garden on the south side of the cottage with cardboard and are continuing to spread the 13 yards of dirt. Liz Stacey - Chair Gardening Committee Children's Pumpkin Decorating Workshop On Saturday, October 20 we held our 3 rd Annual Children s Pumpkin Decoraring Workshop at Ferguson Cottage. The children learned about planting pumpkin seeds, the life cycle of a pumpkin and the many uses of pumpkins. Visit the Pumpkin Seed table at our October meeting to discover the good nutrients in pumpkin seeds and learn how to include them in your diet. Renate Wells Feeding Your Rhubarb Patch After Halloween, put your Jack-o -lantern on your rhubarb patch. Chop it up into large chunks and lay the chunks on top of your rhubarb patch, skin side up. The chunks will disappear into the soil and the nutrients from the pumpkin pulp will feed your rhubarb plants. So you don t have

4 a Jack-o -lantern to discard?
