1 May 2006 Ramblings -Jerry Kyle This is the pond that Jack built. The April meeting was at Jack Flockhart s house and many drove to Lodi to see his pond. Start with a nice landscaping plan and add a fine, well established pond that has been upgraded and improved over a twenty year span and you have a look of permanence and serenity that only time can produce to give one a taste of the beauty and the pride that can be achieved. Exposed pipes, valves, and other things give a different perspective. One does not have to imagine how the plumbing is laid out. It can be seen. One does not have to wonder how a waterfall can be built. The uncovered framework is there. Then there is the big pride, the skimmer. Simple plumbing tweaks allow it to run over 3500 gallons an hour which makes it just suck fallen debris off the surface if needed. The beauty and the beast. Jack has the beauty while mine is still the beast. Visitors saw dozens of nursery pots on the patio waiting for the beast to be finished so it can also be transformed into a beauty. My goal is getting closer to realization. I want that serenity and pride just like Jack. How did it all start? Six years ago I heard of a pond tour being sponsored by The Camellia Koi Club in the Sacramento area. I never heard of them but nearing retirement and wanting to make the back yard a nicer place motivated me to take a look. My wife came along half heartedly and fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the very first pond. A truly Japanese style pond complete with Japanese Koi was the first pond on the tour. The owner, Tom, was pleased to show me his filter system and answer many questions. My wife was so relaxed sitting by Tom and Judy s pond that she wanted to stay there while I completed the tour to return for her later. At that time we both had high stress jobs and knew Jack Flockhart s 6,000 gal. pond with pergola in Lodi.

2 Page 2 May 2006 Pond Tour Update - Dan Alarid Everything is in place for what will be our biggest and hopefully our club's most successful pond tour ever. On the docent's pre-pond tour review of May 6th and 7th, all but two of our 16 ponds were on display and they all looked magnificent with a back drop of beautiful flora. The publicity and advertising are all out there. All that is needed now is the sale of tickets and more tickets Bring on the people on May 20 and 21st for a wonderful tour of beautiful ponds! I would like to give a big thanks to all of the club members who helped bring this all together with special thanks going out to the Pershings, Jeannene and Bob, Sandy Sylvester, Pauline Sakai, Duane Carlson and Jim Phillips. Without these people stepping up to do a large portion of the work it just wouldn't have happened. President s Message Jerry Kyle It is time. Call your neighbors and friends and relatives from out of town. Let s all go on the Pond Tour. You do not need to hire a babysitter as under12 year olds are free. That makes it easier. We only do this every other year and it is our one big fund raiser. Aside from raising the money we need to do all the good things we do to promote our hobby, this is a fantastic opportunity for each of us to see some different ponds and get different ideas how to improve what we already have. Most of these ponds do not belong to club members so this is our one shot to get to see them. You all know what a lot of work the committee has put in to piece this tour together. Now let s all go enjoy the fruits of their labor. Thank you, committee members. I know I will have an enjoyable weekend May 20 and 21.

4 Page 4 May 2006 April 6 News Release to Various Koi & Garden Clubs Pauline Sakai Popular Garden and Koi Pond Tour Returns as a Two Day Event The Camellia Koi Club, a local non-profit club, hosts a Pond and Water Garden Tour on May 20th and 21st. This event is usually held every two years as the major fund raiser to support the club s goal of promoting good koi husbandry. Because of the increased popularity of water gardening and the koi (ornamental carp) hobby, the tour has been expanded to two days. During the two day event sixteen unique gardens and ponds located on private property, not normally open to the public, will be featured. Visitors will experience the magic that washes the stress of the day away in a garden setting with the sounds of waterfalls as the colorful koi swim their hypnotic dance. A variety of pond equipment, used to properly maintain water quality to adequately keep these pets, will be on display. Ponds included on this tour, range from a 650 gallon garden accent to a 23,000 gallon swimming pool conversion. Don t miss this event! The tour will be 9am-4pm each day. Saturday, May 20, will feature eight ponds in the Roseville Granite Bay Natomas area. Sunday, May 21, will feature eight ponds in the Sacramento Elk Grove area. Ponds may be visited in any order. Each location will have Camellia Koi Club members as docents to answer your pond and koi questions. Ticket prices are: Fifteen dollars ($15.00) for Saturday and fifteen dollars ($15.00) for Sunday with a special price of Twenty five dollars ($25.00) if both are purchased at the same time. Children under twelve with adults will not be charged. There are so many, in fact, that the tour is a two day affair. Some folks may not have the time to visit all the ponds available on both Saturday and Sunday. Those that can only attend one day do not have to worry which is the better day. Each day has a nice mix of ponds from the simpler more basic offerings in more modest yards to the best in upscale surroundings. There is something for everyone. Jack describes the process of building his pond to Jerry and the club. The Pond Tour Committee has done a superb job of putting together this year s tour. Some of the ponds that are not do-it-yourselfer projects will even have the builders there to answer questions. This pond tour will be both an educational experience for those looking for answers and a stimulating idea producer for those dreaming of improving their existing pond or building new. Once in a while there comes along one of those don t miss it happenings. This is one of those times. One of these ponds my be your inspiration and you do not want to miss it. 7 Page 7 May 2006 Board of Director Minutes The meeting was called to order by Jerold Kyle, Pres. Attending were Jason Sergeant, VP, Marilee Marshall, Treasurer, and Directors Gary Fabian, Jack Flockhart, Phyllis Kyle, and Jim Phillips. Also attending were Garry Chin and Ellen Evans. The Board approved a motion by Marilee to accept nominations for Koi Person of The Year at the club meeting which is to directly follow the Board Meeting. As there will be no meeting in May due to the Pond Tour, voting will be by or direct phone call to Marilee. This will allow the results to be in and notify AKCA in May. Ellen Evans announced she would like to assume the duties of Webmaster and will work with Marilee to make the transition go smoothly. She will post the Koi Ahoy on the website so it can readily be accessed at any time. Ellen proposed a fee schedule for Koi Ahoy advertising in response to inquiries by interested koi related businesses who wish to get their messages to Camellia Koi Club members. The Board, while reserving the right to possibly refuse some advertising, liked the idea of the newsletter as well as the Website being financially self supporting. Jason reported and led the discussions on meeting locations for the remainder of the year. The May meeting will be replaced by the Pond Tour. He confirmed Eddie LaBrado will host the June and Ellen Evans will host the July meetings. Mary Beth Avila will host August with the annual club koi auction which will be combined with a Pot Luck this year. September will be replaced by the koi show. Dennis and Ellen Ragaza will host the October meeting. November is still open while Marilee has already made reservations for the December annual holiday dinner meeting location. Garry Chin had a positive report on the progress and planning of the koi show including the addition of another major sponsor and the addition of a major Japanese breeder visiting from Japan as a judge. Since the information was so important to everyone, it was decided he give the report to all the club members who were waiting for the meeting to start directly after the Board meeting. The meeting was adjourned so everyone could hear Garry's report. The next meeting is scheduled for noon just before the club meeting at Eddie s pond on June 25th.
