Control Systems ingenious The most advanced sensor-based controls. Now integrated into our most popular fixtures.
Prudential Ltg. has always been a smart choice for architects and designers who demand simple, cost-effective solutions that don t compromise performance. And when the challenge is finding more energy-efficient ways to light classrooms and workspaces, Prudential is again the place to turn. Many of our best-selling fixtures are now available with control sensors integrated directly into the housing. Our fixtures arrive at the jobsite with the controls pre-programmed, so there s no complex commissioning required of the contractor. With integrated controls, Prudential fixtures are ready to start cutting energy costs right out of the box. And that makes perfect sense. Saving Energy, Cutting Costs, and Reducing Emissions. Whether you re working on an entirely new design or the retrofit of an existing building, automatic lighting control systems can dramatically cut energy use, lower operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). In fact, an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report identified electricity as the single largest contributor to GHG emissions. This symbol signifies products that offer control options. The light we create, and how we create it, can ensure brighter days ahead for all of us. And buildings are the single largest consumer of electricity, with GHG emissions projected to grow faster than those from any other sector from around 33% today to 37% by Here s the good news: Improving energy efficiency in buildings could offset 85% of the projected incremental demand for electricity. And thanks to the kind of innovation you ll find from Prudential, creating energy-efficient solutions is easier than ever. Stringent Codes Meet Aesthetic Flexibility. With a wide range of Prudential fixtures now available with integrated lighting controls, architects and designers are sure to find there s a Prudential luminaire in compliance with today s stringent energy codes. Yet in choosing a Prudential fixture, you ll find it s easy to meet your aesthetic criteria as well. Our Pru15, M7 and Snap are just some of the more popular Prudential designs that can be specified to include integrated lighting controls. Prudential Ltg East 22nd Street, Los Angeles, CA tel fax
1 2 3 Sense System for Classrooms RightLight Daylight Harvesting R-Occ Room & Row Occ Sensor S-Occ Small Space Occ Sensor Problem: Lighting Classrooms properly when they re occupied, shutting the lights off when they re not. Solution: Prudential fixtures fitted with integrated lighting controls. They incorporate occupancy sensors that switch off lights in unoccupied rooms, and daylight harvesting sensors that adjust light level automatically to dramatically cut energy use in classrooms. Problem: Overlighting a space when there s ample daylight available. Solution: Fixtures from Prudential Ltg. that incorporate a daylight harvesting sensor. As available daylight reaches sufficient levels, the control systems dim the electric lights to conserve energy. Problem: The lighting that s left on in unoccupied rooms is a major source of wasted energy. Solution: The integrated occupancy sensors in selected Prudential fixtures cut costs by dimming or shutting off the lights when no one is using the space. 4Problem: While stairwells are critical passageways for emergency evacuations, fully lighting them 24/7 isn t an efficient use of energy. Solution: Stairwell fixtures from Prudential featuring occupancy sensors help cut operating costs and carbon emissions by lighting stairwells only when occupied. prulite.com
1 Order in the Classroom. Whether you re retro-fitting an existing school building or specifying classroom fixtures for an entirely new facility, the Sense System from Prudential Ltg offers a solution that uses state-of-the-art wireless technology to deliver critical cost savings. Wave2 Pru15 Our Wave2 and Pru15 fixtures meet or exceed CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools) standards for glare-free lighting, teacher control, and energy efficiency. Fixture-integrated daylight sensor requires no additional wiring. The photocell triggers the lights to dim when levels exceed 45fc. Energy waste is a turn-off. The Sense System starts saving energy the moment you flip the switch. Ceiling-mounted PIR occupancy sensor is Solar powered and wireless. It ships from the factory pre-programmed so it requires no wiring and no commissioning on site. Optional whiteboard luminaire. See P-40, P43, P60, P63, P5900. Teacher Control switches from General to A/V Lighting mode, provides manual dimming of A/V lighting, and allows for 1-hour Occupancy sensor override. 5 Knowing the right light. Prudential Ltg fixtures have long been a favorite choice of architects and designers seeking performance and value in a classroom lighting solution. Now, there s another reason to put Prudential at the top of your list: the Sense System. To meet the challenge of cutting energy costs and helping to reduce emissions, the system employs advanced technologies, including solar-power for its PIR occupancy sensors. Sense is able to determine whether a classroom is occupied or not, and deactivate the lighting as needed. Natural daylight is harvested when available, automatically dimming the lighting from the appropriate fixtures. And because the system is wireless, it saves both material and manpower costs in its installation. Planning Information. Motion Sensors: Ceiling mounted occupancy sensor has a walking motion radius of just over 20 feet of coverage, or about 1500 SF in a space with a 9-ft ceiling. Sensor is solar powered, with the charge lasting about 48 hours. Sensor is set to power off all lamps if the room is unoccupied for 10 minutes. Luminaires are manually switched on at the classroom door, or teacher control switch, so that lights do not trip on unintentionally Daylight Harvesting Sensors: Fixture integrated daylight harvesting sensors should be located over typical work surfaces, within 6-10 feet of the window. A typical daylighting zone is usually 15 feet in from the window wall. Specific site conditions will dictate the designation of dimming zones. If fixture rows are parallel to windows, one daylight sensor can control the entire window row. Inside fixture row may or may not need a daylight sensor, depending on room conditions. One sensor can control up to twenty 0-10V dimming ballasts. In the Sense System, only the outer lamp rows are controlled by the daylight sensors. The center lamp row is dimmed manually at the Teacher Control Station. prulite.com
How to order Sense System. Transforming classroom lighting with the energy savings of our Sense System controls is easy. It only takes a few steps, outlined in detail below. Before you can specify the right solution for your needs, you ll need to start by determining the type of rows in each classroom. Are they parallel or perpendicular to the windows? Are the windows high? Once you ve identified your particular scenario, you re ready to specify the appropriate luminaires and control systems. Determining Row Types Scenario A: Rows are parallel to the windows; Inner corridor side row is outside of the daylight dimming zone. Only the center lamp row (A/V mode) dims manually from Teacher Control Station. Window row has one daylight sensor controlling the outer lamp rows for the entire fixture row. Center lamps for both rows dim manually at the Teacher Control Station. 0DD no daylight dimming; center lamp A/V dimming only. 1DD one zone daylight dimming - entire row. 0DD 1DD Scenario B: Rows are perpendicular to the windows; Each fixture row has one sensor controlling the outer lamp rows within the dimming zone. The rest of the outer lamp rows do not dim. The entire center lamp row in both fixture rows dim manually at the Teacher Control Station. 1D1N one daylight dimming zone, one non-dimming zone. 1D1N 1D1N Scenario C: Rows are perpendicular to high windows, creating two different daylight dimming zones, and one non-dimming zone. Each fixture row has two sensors controlling the outer lamp rows within the dimming zone. The rest of the outer lamp rows do not dim. The entire center lamp row in both fixture rows dim manually at the Teacher Control Station. 2D1N two daylight dimming zones, one non-dimming zone. 2D1N 2D1N Prudential Ltg East 22nd Street, Los Angeles, CA tel fax
Step1: Specify your luminaire. For all the features of the Sense System, specify Wave2 or Pru15, with 3 lamp rows, D3C distribution, dual circuiting, and the INTC (integrated controls) option. Indicate any other options such as extended cable lengths, acrylic dust cover, or emergency batteries. If the A/V lighting mode feature is not necessary for the project needs, the other features of the system: the wireless switching, day light harvesting, and occupancy sensing are still available when a 2-lamp system is specified. Sample fixture part # Pru15-SQ-3T8-R24 -SPL-TMW-D3C-DC-UNV-X1-INTC This describes a 24-foot square Pru15 fixture row, 3T8 dual circuit lamp rows with center lamp reflector, 120 volt, 48 adjustable cable mount from a T-bar ceiling with Sense System integrated classroom controls. series/body style lamp rows nominal length shielding color/finish distribution circuiting voltage ceiling system options 3_ R_ D3C DC INTC- Pru15-SQ Pru15-R T8 T5 row length in feet SPL BLW TMW YGW X1 X3 ADC CA- Wave2 T5HO Y 347 EML CC UNV EMH Step2: Specify the Sense System A: Indicate the room number so that pre-programmed components and fixtures can be labeled, shipped, and installed together. RM_ room number B: Specify number of ceiling mounted occupancy sensors per classroom. _ WOS wireless occupancy sensors C: Specify a row type designation for each fixture row in the room. All center lamp rows have manually controlled dimming. Designate the number of daylight dimming zones and non-dimming zones for the outer lamp rows controlled by the integrated daylight sensors: 0DD no daylight dimming; center lamp A/V dimming only 1DD one zone daylight dimming - entire row 1D1N one daylight dimming zone, one non-dimming zone 2DD two daylight dimming zones entire row dims in separate zones 2D1N two daylight dimming zones, one non-dimming zone D: Specify number of Main power switches at each classroom door. _MSW master power switches E: The Sense System includes one Teacher Control Station per classroom. 8 2 RightLight Daylight Harvesting. More and more, architects are learning to harvest natural daylight within their designs to help meet lighting requirements as efficiently as possible. Partnering with Philips, Prudential Ltg. offers a simple, flexible way to help optimize the lighting usage in interior spaces: RightLight Daylight Harvesting. Got Daylight? It s Savings Time. Vader Wave Wave2 M5 M7 M9 Olympic Mini Olympic Pru5 Pru7 Pru9 Pru15 Legend P10 P25 P30 P40 P54 P60 P69 P5500 P5600 For architects and designers, one of the key questions today is this: how do you create opportunities in the building s design and site orientation to utilize available daylight for natural illumination of interior spaces? One critical component: cuttingedge sensor technologies that accurately measure light levels and adjust the operation of the fixtures to maximize efficiency. That s RightLight And because RightLight is integrated into the housing of the Prudential fixture, installers and end-users don t have to worry about complicated programming or commissioning. It s a true plug-and-play solution. Prudential Ltg East 22nd Street, Los Angeles, CA tel fax
Choose Your Luminaire. Any of the Prudential fixtures shown on the opposite page can be fitted with RightLight Daylight Harvesting technology. So make the selection that s the ideal fixture to help fulfill your aesthetic vision and functional requirements. RightLight comes integrated into our fixtures from the factory. There s no additional wiring to the fixture, and power packs or DALI ballasts are not required. Our fixtures arrive on the jobsite pre-calibrated to dim when light levels reach 45fc. If adjustments are necessary, it s easy to do in the field. Just turn the bezel, and the photocell s aperture opens or closes to change the calibration. Prudential fixtures fitted with RightLight technology are an affordable way to create multiple daylighting zones. The system can operate up to twenty 0-10V ballasts on one sensor. Determine your Dimming zones. To determine the number of dimming zones, general design guidelines are to locate the sensor over characteristic work surfaces, approximately 6 to 10 from the window. The daylit zone is typically within 15 of the window. Scenario A: One Dimming Zone - One Sensor Rows parallel to window wall. Non-dimming Zone In this example, a typical classroom layout, fixture rows are parallel to window wall. Entire row is controlled by a single sensor Dimming Zone Daylit zone/15 feet from window wall Scenario B: One Dimming Zone - Two Sensors Rows perpendicular to window wall. To help determine the number of dimming zones, the general design guidelines are to locate the sensor over work surfaces, approximately 6 to 10 from the window. The daylit zone is usually within 15 of the window. In this example, fixture rows are perpendicular to window wall. Each row is controlled separately, with one sensor each within the dimming zone. Dimming Zone Non-dimming Zone Daylit zone/15 feet from window wall Scenario C: Two Dimming Zones - Four Sensors High window wall. Since daylight entering into an interior falls off in intensity the further it enters into the space, sometimes it is necessary to create more than one dimming zone. In this example, fixture rows are perpendicular to a high window wall. The result is 2 dimming zones and 1 non-dimming zone. The rows are controlled separately, with two control zones within each row. Dimming Zone Dimming Zone Non-dimming Zone Daylit zone/15 feet from window wall How to order. Start by choosing your luminaire. Then determine the number of dimming zones per row. De-coding our part numbers: Sample part#: WV2-2T8 - R24' - BLW - TMW - D3 - SC CA48"- X1-2DLH This describes a Wave2 single 24-foot row, 2T8 single circuit lamp rows, 120 volt, cable mounted from T-bar ceiling, with 2 daylight harvesting sensors. prulite.com
