Introduction To introduce the reader to this standard, information on condensed aerosol technology is given below. Condensed aerosol extinguishing agents consist of finely divided solid particles that are typically based on alkali metal salts and gases that typically comprise nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour. These aerosols extinguish fires chemically, interfering with the flame chain reaction by removing the reactive free radicals. The action takes place mainly on the surface of the solid aerosol particles, and therefore, the finer the particles the more effective the extinguishing mechanism will be. Inert gases generated by the forming reaction of condensed aerosols also contribute to extinguishing the fire. The condensed-aerosol-generating combustion process provides sufficient energy for a rapid discharge and efficient distribution of the aerosol. No propelling gas is required for the aerosol delivery. A condensed aerosol generator typically has one or more discharge outlets. Condensed aerosol is self-generated by a combustion process of a solid aerosol-forming compound that is contained in a suitable housing. Condensed aerosol generators contain an actuating device to activate the aerosol-forming compound.

5 Disposable portable condensed aerosol fire extinguishers 1 Scope This standard specifies the characteristics of disposable portable condensed aerosol fire extinguishers that are of charge mass not exceeding g and that are suitable for use on class A, B, C or F fires. Requirements are specified for the compulsory minimum performance in extinguishing class A, B, C and F test fires. NOTE 1 Units that meet the requirements of this standard fall within the category of portable, non-refillable fire extinguishers. NOTE 2 The fire performance tests in this standard are the minimum necessary to determine fire type suitability and do not equate to a formal fire rating. As a result, these portable, non-refillable units are not intended to be an equivalent or replacement for more traditional type fire extinguishers that carry a formal fire rating. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
