Basic condition for a smooth process: All other business processes must be coordinated including fire prevention. KOMSA, a service provider for products and solutions of the digital world, is not only a leader in the distribution of smart phones and tablets but also storage systems. Small robots manage the space-saving AutoStore storage system. However, the compact design places particularly high demands on fire prevention. Read more about the solution that meets these requirements on Page 6. What do Aga Khan University in London, the Hungarian National Museum, and a small parts warehouse in Romania have in common? They all store valuable and irreplaceable items. Yet they are so different that the appropriate fire prevention solution must always be individually designed. 5 Fire prevention with water? Not for the Archives of the Hungarian National Museum! For around 150 years, the Városliget City Park in Budapest has been the green lung of the Hungarian capital. The numerous museums here are just as old so the area is now being renovated as part of a major public project. In addition, there are new buildings such as the restoration and storage centre of the Hungarian National Museum a complex of buildings equipped with fire prevention technology. The restoration and storage centre, which is expected to be completed in autumn 2018 and houses the largest collection and research site on Hungarian history, is one of the most modern of its kind: On around 37,000 m 2, spread over four underground and three aboveground levels in five buildings, there are restoration workshops and art storage halls as well as research spaces, studios, and offices. This provides the best conditions for accommodating more than 350,000 works of art. Because water would irretrievably destroy the valuable exhibits in an emergency, sprinkler systems as fire prevention solutions were ruled out from the outset for the operators. The customer therefore opted for two FirExting gas extinguishing systems to protect a total of 53 rooms and areas in two buildings. Their size varies from 21 m 3 to 2,700 m 3. The extinguishing agent used is nitrogen, which is ideally suited for use in archives and museums. Nitrogen has a density similar to that of air, distributes homogeneously, and thus has an excellent extinguishing effect. The natural extinguishing gas is non-toxic, electrically non-conductive, and extinguishes completely without residues. It thus offers optimum protection for the inventory. The company network ZUKUNFTINC. is showing itself in a new light at job fairs in the Hanover region: A new stand has been designed for appearances at events such as meet@hochschule (meet@university) or Lange Nacht der Berufe (Long night of careers). The new booth of ZUKUNFTINC. is well received at vocatium. Visitors are showing a great deal of interest. Experts & types wanted: The WAGNER Group presents itself together with ZUKUNFTINC. ZUKUNFTINC. is an association of ten companies from the Hanover region, including the WAGNER Group, for which the common goal is the recruitment of qualified applicants. The cooperation, which also includes industry leaders such as Bahlsen and Sennheiser, enables the companies not only to recruit urgently needed specialists but also to strengthen the Hanover economic region. In order to successfully implement this task in the future, Alexander Goehrmann Team Leader of Trade Fairs of the WAGNER Group and the WAGNER graphics team developed a new trade fair stand. 6 COVER STORY Robot-supported AutoStore warehouse: Compact design places great demands on fire prevention Anyone who passes KOMSA s headquarters in Hartmannsdorf, Saxony has no idea that the storage technology of the future has found its way into the middle of this rural idyll: Since December 2017, AutoStore small parts warehouse, where robots ensure an optimum flow of goods, has been in operation here. The very compact design of the enclosed small parts warehouse results in a high packing density, which makes optimum use of available storage space. This requires new fire prevention solutions. For active fire prevention, KOMSA relies on OxyReduct, which reduces oxygen. KOMSA is one of the leading distributors and service providers for products and solutions in the digital world. Around 1,700 employees at locations in Germany and Poland ensure that devices required for digitisation, such as smart phones, tablets, and routers, arrive where they are needed. Last year, the company set up a new 675 m 2 AutoStore small parts warehouse at its headquarters in Hartmannsdorf in order to optimise its logistics processes. Approx. 25,000 plastic containers, each with a capacity of 70 litres, are stacked close together and on top of each other. A self-supporting aluminium construction (grid) divides the storage area into rectangular sections. Up to 16 containers can be stacked in each field. The height and shape of the grid can be selected individually depending on the storage situation in order to integrate existing columns and obstacles in the storage rooms, for example. The rails for the robots are located on the grid module. These can move in two directions and thus reach any position in the grid to pick up, transport, and deposit containers. Nine order picking modules, which are installed on the sides of the AutoStore system, transfer the containers with the desired stored goods to the order pickers. After removal of the stored goods, the containers are returned quickly and fully automatically by the robots. Fire-related malfunctions are a no-go When defining the prevention goals, particular importance was attached to minimising fire-related malfunctions in addition to the protection of persons, the environment, and property. Processes should run smoothly, and delivery capability should be maintained. Even when planning the warehouse, it was clear to us that we would not be able to cope with conventional fire prevention systems such as a fire prevention solution based on sprinkler technology, says Gernot Graebner, Supply Chain Manager at KOMSA. If fires are extinguished with water, it cannot be guaranteed that the defined protection goals will be achieved, explains WAGNER project manager Thomas Niemetz. The AutoStore warehouse is not divided into aisles like a conventional small parts warehouse but rather has a compact design and is completely filled with containers. In the event of a fire, the extinguishing water may not even reach the source of the fire because the containers stacked on top of 6 WAGNER IMPULSE 3/2018

8 COVER STORY Intelligent fire prevention concept with OxyReduct By actively preventing fires, the oxygen concentration in the protected area of the AutoStore system is permanently reduced to a level corresponding to the defined risks. The required OxyReduct system is installed in a container placed outside the logistics hall. From the ambient air, a generator generates nitrogen in a purely physical process. This is fed through a pipe system into the small parts store as required. Here the nitrogen is distributed homogeneously and thus forms the oxygen-reduced protective atmosphere. TITANUS intake smoke detectors for early fire detection are installed as the basis of the Vds-certified solution with OxyReduct. Highly sensitive and foolproof, they detect even the smallest amounts of smoke particles. For example, an immediate shut down of the energy supply can minimise smoke contamination that can occur in electrically supported smouldering fires. The combination of OxyReduct and TITANUS results in a maximum level of protection, which is absolutely in the customer s interest, says Niemetz. Frank Werner, Project Manager at KOMSA, confirms: It is crucial for us that we can extremely minimise the risk of fire-related disruption with the individual protection solution from WAGNER. Fire prevention that grows with you Also positive: OxyReduct is scalable an advantage that could become apparent in the not too distant future. Digitisation is in full swing everywhere. The demand for goods stored at KOMSA is rising continuously. With the AutoStore system, we have created a very flexible and growing storage solution. We only need to expand the aluminium construction and use additional robots, and the storage capacity can already be doubled, says Werner. And fire prevention can grow just as easily, explains Niemetz. As the AutoStore system grows, our fire prevention solution can be easily adapted to provide optimum protection at all times. Fire effects such as high temperatures, smoke, and fire-fighting water would contaminate and destroy our goods. This would lead to the interruption of our business processes and consequently to the failure of our delivery capability an absolute no-go for us, says Gräbner. We quickly came up with the active fire prevention technology OxyReduct from WAGNER. The AutoStore warehouse is a self-contained system. 9 INTERVIEW INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIAN JARGSTORFF Maintaining operational processes and ability to deliver Christian Jargstorff is Key Account Manager at the WAGNER Group and supports international clients from the logistics industry. In addition, the 36-year-old acts as a global interface for the warehouse and logistics sector: He gains industry-specific experience from projects and passes it on to colleagues all over the world if required. In an interview, Jargstorff explains what fire prevention is all about for AutoStore operators. Mr Jargstorff, what were the fire prevention challenges for an AutoStore storage solution? An AutoStore small parts warehouse is a highly efficient robot-supported storage and order picking solution. A fire could get out of control extremely quickly without immediate counteractive measures. Because of the special construction as a room-in-aroom as well as its compactness, an external extinguishing process is extremely difficult. Only automatic fire prevention systems provide reliable protection. However, with storage containers stacked close together, sprinkler systems are unable to control fires quickly enough. Even for conventional gas extinguishing systems, it is hardly possible to quickly generate a uniform and extinguishable gas concentration. In such cases, a fire should be actively prevented through oxygen reduction. WAGNER has developed OxyReduct precisely for these challenges How is the prevention target to be defined in an AutoStore warehouse? The aim of the fire prevention solution from WAGNER is to avoid business interruptions beyond the protection of persons and the environment required by building regulations. To this end, damage to property and the storage system must be minimised. This is the only way to ensure the operator s ability to deliver and to avoid damage to the company s image and loss of customers in the event of a fire. What are typical causes of fire in AutoStore warehouses? As in other warehouses, defective electrical equipment and installations are often typical causes of fire. In particular, defective insulation on power and charging cables can lead to short circuits and ultimately fires. Causes can also be loose clamping points of cables. Of course, external fire sources entering can also not be excluded. In general: Even small mistakes can have a devastating effect. Which fire prevention solution is particularly suitable for the protection of AutoStore containers? An oxygen-reducing solution using OxyReduct is the only sensible solution for AutoStore warehouses. In order to optimally achieve the protection goal, in addition to thermal fire damage, damage from smoke must be prevented as far as possible. To this end, the OxyReduct system is supplemented by early fire detection with TITANUS air sampling smoke detectors. In this way, a fire can be detected as quickly as possible, and fire-intensifying current can be switched off. The driving force is the Renault subsidiary Dacia, which offers the Duster, a robust SUV without many extras. Because sales figures have been rising for years, increasingly more automotive suppliers are settling in Romania. Central concern at the suppliers: Reliable assurance of the logistics chain right up to the customer at all times. At its two Romanian sites, an automotive supplier operates automatic small parts warehouses. Flexible shuttle systems from Kardex Remstar ensure maximum storage volume. However, their compact design presents challenges for optimum fire protection. In order to meet these requirements, the small parts stores were equipped with a VdS-certified solution designed especially for shuttle systems. The plants were positively accepted by the Czech VdS in February At one location, four shuttle systems, which are divided into two extinguishing areas, were equipped with WAGNER fire prevention systems. The protection volume of the small parts store is 420 m 3. At the other location, the protection volume is somewhat lower (390 m 3 ), although nine shuttle systems are protected in five extinguishing areas. TITANUS PRO SENS devices ensure effective and rapid fire detection at both locations, while FirExting gas extinguishing systems ensure reliable extinguishing. This prevents turbulence of the stored material as well as damage to the shuttles. Both orders were realised via the Romanian WAGNER sales partner Pyronova; WAGNER Austria and Pyronova were responsible for the installation of the fire prevention solutions. Even small fires can cause a great deal of damage: Logistics processes can be interrupted, and assets and goods can be affected, explains Gerald Koller, Business Development Manager at WAGNER Austria. In reality, the area north of the station has been under development as a new urban quarter for several years. In addition to Google and the high-circulation daily newspaper The Guardian, Aga Khan University has also settled here. A recently completed building houses the university s archive. Active fire prevention to preserve the historical writings under optimal climatic conditions has posed special challenges here. Aga Khan University is an international university operating institutes in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Islamic studies are taught on the campus in London. The focus is on cultures shaped by Islam. The university s London ar- chives include religious writings that are housed in a 234 m 3 room. Many of the archived books are valuable single copies a fire would irretrievably destroy them. A challenge that was solved thanks to the close cooperation of the WAGNER team in Great Britain, Arup, and the Aga Khan University. 13 DOES FIRE PREVENTION WORK PROPERLY WHEN IT MATTERS? PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ENSURES THIS! The demands on the operators of fire prevention systems are high. Especially important: expert and regular maintenance, which belongs in the hands of specialists. But what makes correct service in fire prevention? What does professional, preventive maintenance look like? What is required by law? Whether oxygen reduction, gas extinguishing, early fire detection or fire alarm system: Fire prevention systems must be regularly inspected, maintained, and repaired by service technicians, says Patrick Marciniak, Service Manager of the WAGNER branch office in Mülheim on the Ruhr. On the safe side As a rule, the WAGNER service technicians visit the systems they look after once per quarter. The minimum extent of the inspection is specified in detail in the respective regulations and according to VdS and VDE , for example. To test smoke detectors, for example, our service technicians use certified testing equipment, explains Marciniak. They then check whether the smoke detector triggers, whether the alarm signal arrives at the fire alarm system, and whether the required fire scenarios (and, where available, fire brigade connection) work, says the service manager. The specially trained technicians not only have the fire prevention system itself in view but also the entire system. They document the functionality and show the customer potential for improvement in the final discussion. Marciniak explains that the age-related replacement of emergency power batteries, smoke detectors, detector modules, and pressure hoses in particular is an important factor for the perfect functioning of the systems: The wear limits are specified in the relevant regulations. If wear is detected during the inspection, the service technician notes this in the maintenance log and offers an exchange. Our clients are thus always on the safe side. Intuition required In addition to scheduled maintenance dates, malfunctions occasionally occur. We quickly arrive on site in order to find and eliminate causes of malfunctions and repair the systems promptly, explains Marciniak. In addition to technical expertise, a intuition is often required because a striking fire protection system is always a highly sensitive matter. But the best guarantee for perfect protection in the event of fire is standard-compliant, preventive maintenance as well as professional service, says the service manager. These trends determined the discussions in Hall 6 at CEBIT, where the WAGNER Group covered topics relating to system-specific fire protection for data centres at the 360 dc pavilion. Monika Grass from Grass Events has been the director here for years. The Impulse editorial team spoke to her about the new CEBIT, trends in data centres, and fire prevention. Ms Grass, with your many years of experience at CEBIT, how do you rate the new concept of the trade fair? I like the new CEBIT, even though I would still like to see additional modifications. The modern and cheeky approach addresses the target group, although for many, I present a rather boring technology with the Data Centre Infrastructure Community. We still need to work on the profile. The data centres are the basic infrastructure for our work, life, and progress! You know many decision-makers in this industry. What do you think are the important trends? The use of waste heat is being increasingly discussed. The focus is on EDGE data centres in the most diverse facets as well as automa- tion. My buzzword for the next months and also for CEBIT 2019 is Multilingual. All parties involved must work together to develop solutions in the areas of IT, networks, power, climate, fire prevention, and security. Other challenges: lack of skilled workers and the age of the infrastructure. How do data centres address these challenges? From my point of view, it is not only an issue for data centres but also for suppliers, planners, consultants, and experts. We should work together to meet the challenges of developing expertise and employees. In your opinion, what can this mean for fire prevention? I tend towards even more prevention, so I encourage a discussion with suppliers, experts, the fire brigade, associations, and insurance companies. 15 SOLUTION Don t be fooled by the fog: TITANUS MULTI SENS recognises what is burning What would The Phantom of the Opera be without theatrical fog? Probably a bit bland. And even a laser show in a night club develops its full potential only in thick wafts of fog. But for fire prevention, the fine aerosol is considered problematic fire detectors and automatic extinguishing systems can be triggered incorrectly. With the TITANUS MULTI SENS air sampling smoke detector, this is a thing of the past. It recognises artificial fog as an interference factor and blocks it out in such a way that it is protected against false alarms. The situation in theatres, opera houses, and night clubs is as follows: If operators use artificial fog, they must switch off the fire alarm systems and automatic extinguishing systems and use fire guards instead. This results in considerable effort and additional costs but was previously regarded as the only reliable way to avoid expensive false alarms. It detects artificially generated fog and dust particles and distinguishes it from smoke particles.
