We develop and produce safety switchgears and switching devices to protect man and machine. As the switchgears have to meet stringent requirements, this is a fastidious technological mission. We also develop customer-specific solutions for the machinery, plant and lift industries. For highly critical applications such as the cable monitoring of cable cars, we offer custom-made solutions.

7 Safety technology: Safe switching and monitoring On many automated production and assembly lines, Schmersal switchgear and safety circuits are protecting man and machine. For instance, by stopping the machine when the guard door is opened or by keeping the door locked until the dangerous movements have come to a standstill. Our portfolio of safety switchgear and safety switching devices for the protection of man and machine is the largest in the world. As well as the conventional electromechanical systems for guard door monitoring, our programme also includes optoelectronic and tactile systems like two-hand control stations. We also develop customer-specific solutions for the machinery, plant and lift industries. For highly critical applications such as the cable monitoring of cable cars, we offer custom-made solutions. It goes without saying that all the products from our safety technology programme meet the highest requirements of the international directives and harmonized standards as well as the national stipulations of our major markets, for example the European standards and directives, the German BG & TUV principles, the Chinese CCC certification and the North-American UL/CSA codes. Our safety switchgear provides safety all over the world, simultaneously allowing for an optimal integration into production cycles. 9 Automation technology: Reliable switching and positioning The automation technology from Schmersal always ensures safe and reliable commands, for instance an automated conveyor must stop at a certain position, a handling tool must pick up parts or a pallet must be accurately positioned in an automatic warehouse. Our switchgear detects the position of tools, goods or machine components in a reliable and accurate manner, even in unfavourable conditions. Our programme ranges from position switches with a wide variety of actuators to gear switches and micro switches, proximity switches and non-contact magnetic switches. Many of these products initially were customer-specific developments e. g. fully electronic hoist limit switches for mobile cranes, contributing to the safe hoisting and unloading of heavy loads. We also developed special position switches for the automated entrance steps on busses and trains. Apart from switches for automated movements, we also offer practical solutions for the man-machine interface like, for example, hygienic signalling and command devices used specifically in Pharmaceutical and F & B industry. A customer having to replace his Schmersal switchgear for the first time after 30 years, even it has been working under the roughest conditions, is not unusual. Moreover, it proves the effectiveness of our extremely high quality requirements. A fully automated production process, in which intervention of man is no longer required, was yesterday s vision. Today, this thought has been revised. As many fields require the automated production processes to be flexible as well, man and machine must work together in a safe and productive manner.
