3 PRESENCE DETECTION CONTROL Presence detectors are devices designed to detect moving heat sources within there feel of action and they turn the light on and off automatically. 1 PIR Technology How do they do it? Using passive infrared technology. Research and technology have developed highly sensitive sensors of infrared electromagnetic waves that are not visible to the human eye. For example, thermometers for measuring temperature or pyroelectric detectors for measuring radiated heat are devices designed to detect electromagnetic waves in the infrared spectrum. A "passive infrared detector" (PIR for short) records electromagnetic emissions with a wavelength of 5-20 microns, which includes the heat radiation of people or animals. The sensor converts the thermal radiation of moving objects into electrical signals. The sensors themselves do not emit any radiation, which is why they are known as passive infrared sensors (PIR). 96 International catalogue 2015

4 FRESNEL sensor-lens system A multi-segment FRESNEL lens is placed in front of the passive infrared sensor (PIR), which divides the area covered by the detector into a number of segments, so that they concentrate the infrared radiation received from the environment. Each segment registers room temperature at rest, i.e. without movement, so that when the moving heat source crosses a segment, it registers a change in temperature. When two consecutive segments are crossed by the moving body, an electrical signal that activates a relay output is generated under certain conditions, i.e. movement is captured. Due to its operating principle, the movement is best detected when the detector is transversal, not frontal. Therefore two cover areas are differentiated in the sensor, depending on how the movement occurs. The light fitting will be activated when not only movement is captured, but also the light level demanded by the user is greater than the ambient light level when the movement occurs. In addition, the sensors time the lighting for a certain period after the movement so that, when people are still for short periods, the light does not go out. 5 Installation recommendations Is important to note the following points during planning and installation, so that the detectors operate in optimum fashion: - The cover area increases proportionally with the height of the installation. At the same time, sensitivity is reduced and the individual segments are increased. - For optimum detection, the movement must be transverse to the point of installation, i.e. the segments must be cut laterally. - If someone comes to the front detector, it is more difficult for the sensor to register a temperature change, leading to a smaller coverage area. - Fluctuations in ambient temperature caused by the seasons make detection conditions change. For example, in winter there is a greater difference between room temperature and human body temperature, which favours detection and increases the coverage area; however, people wear more clothes in winter and therefore the body does not give off so many infrared waves. - Atmospheric phenomena such as rain, snow or fog can cause a decrease in the sensitivity of the detector and a reduction in its coverage area, since they absorb infrared waves and therefore the amount of infrared radiation that reaches the sensor is lower. When selecting the point of installation, it is important to consider the following facts, which may cause interference: - Animals, such as cats or dogs. - Plants in motion, such as trees or shrubs. - Fans and radiators. - Lamps installed near the sensor. - The detector must have an unobstructed field of view, since the infrared waves can not pass through doors, windows, glass partitions, etc. 98 International catalogue 2015

6 2 Microwave Technology Unlike PIR technology, microwave sensors (HF - High Frequency) only need movement for detection. Microwave sensors have an antenna that transmits ambient radiation waves at a frequency within the microwave spectrum. If an intruder enters the environment, the waves will be reflected on it and back to the device with a frequency offset (Doppler effect), then the sensor will enter alarm status. This technology is active and more sensitive than PIR. It detects extremely small movements and, therefore, is ideal for detecting presence in offices, classrooms, etc. where people "sit still". Another advantage of HF technology is that the sensor does not need to "see" what is being detected, which can almost be hidden. Therefore, the sensor can be hidden in false ceilings, inside walls or behind thin, non-metallic objects. Furthermore, the microwave sensor is insensitive to dirt, unlike the PIR lens, where the performance is degraded if it is soiled, for example, in a dusty environment. The microwave sensor is not affected by the temperature difference that can occur in different seasons; it is more stable than other technologies. Installation recommendations The following must be taken into account for the installation: The opening angle and range, and correct installation height. If more than one microwave sensor is used, they must operate at different frequencies to prevent them from interfering with each other. No sensors should be installed facing each other.
