Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, June 2 nd at Headquarters Station 31. VRFA Managers & Supervisors attended training, Performance Evaluation & Corrective Action, on Wednesday, June 3 rd at Headquarters Station 31. On Thursday, June 4 th, Mrs. Bartol, Mrs. Slevin & Mrs. Streeter attended the King County Fire Administrative Professionals training in Kent. The topic was electronic records retention. Administrator Robertson attended the 10 th Anniversary fundraising lunch for Junior Achievement s JA BizTown on Friday, June 5 th in Auburn. This Week: Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, June 9 th at Headquarters Station 31. The Civil Service Commission will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 9 th at Auburn City Hall. The Finance Committee and Board of Governance will hold their monthly meetings on Tuesday, June 9 th at Headquarters Station 31. 1

2 Senior Staff and Leadership Institute of the South Puget Sound Alumni will attend the graduation banquet for Fire Marshal Norm Golden on Wednesday, June 10 th at Green River College. On Thursday, June 11 th, Command Staff will hold their monthly meeting at Headquarters Station Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Monday, June 1 st at 9:45 a.m., firefighters assisted an adult female complaining of neck pain. The patient was transported to a local emergency room by private vehicle. Oil Spill: (Pacific) On Tuesday, June 2 nd at 4:09 p.m., firefighters responded to an oil spill on Ellingson Road and Highway 167 Southbound onramp. Firefighters arrived to find a spill stretching from Frontage Road to Highway 167. Firefighters called in City of Pacific Public Works to sand Ellingson Road and Washington State Department of Transportation to sand Highway 167 onramp. Pacific Police also assisted with traffic control. Minor Fire: (South Auburn) On Wednesday, June 3 rd at 5:58 p.m., firefighters responded to a cooking fire on a stove top. The fire had been extinguished by the homeowner, but the young adult female had received a small burn on her hand. The crew checked for fire extension, assisted with removing the smoke from the home and treated the woman s burn. The injury was found to be minor and she was left at home. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Thursday, June 4 th at 6:45 p.m., firefighters responded to the 5000 block of Perry Ave S.E. for a teenage female that was hit in the face during domestic violence. The patient was treated and transported to St. Francis Hospital by private ambulance. Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Friday, June 5 th at 7:52 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a one car high speed accident with one person still inside the vehicle. Firefighters quickly extricated the patient from the vehicle. The patient, a young adult male, was treated by King County Medic One and transported via Airlift Northwest to Harborview Medical Center. Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Saturday, June 6 th at 8:19 p.m., firefighters assisted an adult female who fainted and suffered a concussion after being stung by a bee. Arriving VRFA firefighters administered one Epinephrine shot to the patient due to the allergic reaction. The patient was transported to a local hospital by King County Medics. 2

3 Aid Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, June 7 th at around 12:45 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female at the Muckleshoot Casino. The patient was complaining of not feeling well for the past few days and general weakness today. The patient was treated and stabilized on-scene. Firefighters treated and transported the patient to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) in Auburn. Training Division Activities: Year Weekly Year to Date 7,728 8,090 Zone 3 Truck: VRFA Ladder 31 members participated in a Zone 3 truck drill at Station 14 in Renton. The drill is designed to give truck members the opportunity to practice basic and advanced ventilation skills. Members will get extensive time using a chain saw; cutting and completing a louver of the roof. They will also practice these evolutions working as a member of a team to accomplish access, sounding to ensure they are on a stable surface and opening the structure to release heat and smoke. Corrective Action Training: VRFA officers and staff participated in corrective action training taught by an outside instructor. The training addressed how an organization can successfully administer discipline. It reviewed the progressive process and some common pitfalls, or mistakes that may occur when disciplining an employee. The instructor used several group activities to review scenarios and make the training interactive. Fire Marshal s Office: Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections Certified Fire Inspectors completed 11 business safety inspections this week. Work Source, 2707 I St NE: Building Alterations Evergreen Heights Elementary Portable Classroom Building 904, 5602 S 316 th St: Fire Alarm Phoenix Rising Complex, th St NE: Sprinkler Supply Piping Waste Management, nd St NW: CNG Compressor Replacement Raceway Storage, nd Ave SE: o Office Building o Building 1 Public Education The Public Information & Education Officers, PIE Specialists and Firefighter Friis teamed up with the American Red Cross and City of Auburn CERT members to canvas Skylark Mobile Home Parks I and II on two separate days. Approximately 200 homes were visited, 70 plus smoke alarms were installed and fire safety/prevention information shared with homeowners. The Auburn Area Fire Medic Campaign funded the overtime necessary for the event and The American Red Cross provided smoke alarms, installation equipment and volunteers. City of Auburn CERT members also assisted with the canvassing and installation efforts. The Elementary Fire and Life Safety Program continued with classroom visits to Rainier Christian, Gildo Rey, Pioneer, Dick Scobee, Lakeland Hills and Ilalko elementary schools. Firefighter Public Information and Education Specialist Chadwick taught the Think Again program to over 20 classes of high school students at Auburn High School and Auburn Riverside High School. This program focuses on preventing drinking and driving, as well as distracted driving. Several posts to the VRFA Facebook page were made. Window guards were delivered to Auburn Head Start who will distribute them to their families with young children and upper story windows. Tips on preventing window falls were also provided. The window guards were given to the VRFA as 4

5 part of a campaign to prevent injuries and deaths by the Washington State Dept. of Health, Harborview Hospital and the Central Region EMS & Trauma Council. Fire Investigation There were no incidents requiring the services of the Fire Investigation Unit this week. Planning and Logistics P&L received four apparatus and four facility/small tool maintenance requests. BC Larberg participated in an assessment center for Battalion Chief for Shoreline Fire Department. P&L staff participated in performance evaluation & corrective action training. BC Larberg and Captain Thompson participated in the grading process for the fire pumper RFP. 5
