2 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. CPVC: Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride plastic. B. Hose Connection: Valve with threaded outlet matching fire hose coupling thread for attaching fire hose. C. Hose Station: Hose connection, fire hose rack, and fire hose. D. Working Plans: Documents, including drawings, calculations, and material specifications prepared according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 for obtaining approval from authorities having jurisdiction. E. Low-Rise Building: A building that does not qualify as a High-Rise Building as defined below. 1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Design standpipes and sprinklers and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction. B. Design standpipes and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction. Include minimum residual pressures at hydraulically remote outlets according to the following: 1. NPS 1-1/2 (DN40) Hose Connections: 65 psig (450 kpa). 2. NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) Hose Connections: 100 psig (690 kpa). C. Design sprinkler piping according to the following and obtain approval from authorities having jurisdiction: 1. Include 10 percent margin of safety for available water flow and pressure. 2. Include losses through water-service piping, valves, and back flow preventers. 3. (12.6 ml/s over 139-sq. m) area. d. Special Occupancy Hazard: As determined by authorities having jurisdiction. 5. Maximum Protection Area per Sprinkler: As follows: a. Office Space: 225 sq. ft. 3 c. Mechanical Equipment Rooms: 130 sq. ft. (12.1 sq. m). d. Electrical Equipment Rooms: 130 sq. ft. (12.1 sq. m). e. Other Areas: According to NFPA 13 recommendations, unless otherwise indicated. D. Components and Installation: Capable of producing piping systems with 175-psig (1200-kPa) minimum working-pressure rating, unless otherwise indicated. E. Zoning: At a minimum, the system shall be zoned by floor or as required to meet the approval of all applicable Codes and Authorities, whichever is most stringent. F. Design documents are for information only. Be responsible for the actual layouts, routing or piping, and additional sprinkler heads to meet all requirements. G. Be responsible for freeze protection as follows: 1. A dry pipe system shall be provided in any unheated areas where necessary so as to prevent freezing. The dry pipe system shall be complete with an air compressor, storage tank, controls, valves, and all necessary appurtenances for a complete, functional system. Dry pipe system shall be pitched to avoid freezing. Termination of drains shall be approved by the Owner. 2. Dry type heads may be provided off the wet system in unheated areas if this installation provides adequate freeze protection. 3. Route wet piping through heated areas. 4. Be responsible for repairing and/or all costs incurred from damage caused by freezing of the fire protection system. H. Provide a Fire Department standpipe system where required. I. The sprinkler layout for the apartment rooms, suites, and corridors shall be as required to meet the approval of all applicable Codes, Factory Mutual requirements, and Local Authorities whichever is most stringent. J. If required, the Contractor shall provide a fire pump complete with a jockey pump, controller, and all devices necessary for a complete, approved functional system per NFPA 20 and Local Authorities. K. All cooking surfaces and cooking exhaust ducts shall be protected by automatic sprinklers sub-zoned off main sprinkler system with separated annunciated flow and tamper switch (kitchen flow switch to disconnect gas and electric for equipment under associated hood) in accordance with applicable codes, NFPA 13R, NFPA 96, and local authorities, and these specifications whichever is most stringent. L. Low-Rise Buildings: Connect sprinkler piping to riser at each zone. Provide control valve, flow and tamper switches at each connection monitored on the fire alarm system. Locate inspector s test assembly at remote end of zone with discharge piped to exterior drain. See example detail at end of this Module LK 15173

4 M. Apartment Room Closets: Sprinklers not required in clothes closets less than 24 sq. ft. N. Apartment Room Bathrooms: Sprinklers not required if less than 55 sq. ft., unless combustible tubs or shower (plastic/fiberglass) enclosures are used. O. Smoke Control: 1. Standard: NFPA 92A and 92B. 2. Low-Rise Buildings: May be required by Owner, if judged that fire department access is limited or exiting is not adequate. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Submit Letter of Conformance in accordance with Section indicating specified items selected for use in project. B. Product Data: For the following in accordance with Division 1 Section Submittals and Substitutions. 1. Pipe and fitting materials and methods of joining for standpipe piping. 2. Pipe and fitting materials and methods of joining for sprinkler piping. 3. Pipe hangers and supports. 4. Piping seismic restraints (where required). 5. Valves, including specialty valves, accessories, and devices. 6. Alarm devices. Include electrical data. 7. Air compressors. Include electrical data. 8. Fire department connections. Include type; number, size, and arrangement of inlets; caps and chains; size and direction of outlet; escutcheon and marking; and finish. 9. Hose connections. Include size, type, and finish. 10. Hose stations. Include size, type, and finish of hose connections; type and length of fire hoses; finish of fire hose couplings; type, material, and finish of nozzles; and finish of rack. 11. Excess-pressure pumps. Include electrical data. 12. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. C. Fire-Hydrant Flow Test Report: As specified in "Preparation" Article. D. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13R, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction. Include hydraulic calculations. Shop drawings and calculations must be sealed by a registered Professional Engineer licensed in the state where the project is located. E. Be responsible for code research and obtaining all required flow test data and hydraulically designing a fire protection system that meets all applicable requirements. Arrange for, and conduct, the flow test and coordinate its validity with Factory Mutual LK 15173

5 F. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13R and NFPA 14. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping" and "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping." G. Transmit fire protection submittal data to local Factory Mutual office and to the local and state Authorities having jurisdiction and licensing agencies for approval. H. After securing approval of Factory Mutual and Authorities Having Jurisdiction, forward three (3) complete sets of submittal data bearing all approval stamps to the Owner s Representative for final approval. Forward subsequent changes to the Owner s Representative for final approval. I. Do not proceed with work without final approved submittal data bearing all approval stamps including the Owner's approval stamp. J. Be responsible for delays caused by not following the above procedure and/or not completing the design portion of the work in a timely manner. K. Maintenance Data: For each type of standpipe and sprinkler specialty to include in maintenance manuals specified in Division QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who has designed and installed fire-suppression piping similar to that indicated for this Project and obtained design approval and inspection approval from authorities having jurisdiction. B. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified professional engineer. The fire Protection Subcontractor is responsible for code compliance, shall arrange for flow test and coordinate its validity with Factory Mutual, research, design, coordination, and installation of a complete and functional hydraulically calculated sprinkler system (and standpipe system, if required) that meets the approval of and is in accordance with all applicable regulations and requirements of the following and as further specified: 1. Current editions of NFPA pamphlet Nos. 13, 14, 20, 25, and Factory Mutual 2-8N. 3. Applicable codes. 4. Local Authorities having jurisdiction. C. Professional Engineer Qualifications: A professional engineer who is legally qualified to practice in jurisdiction where Project is located and who is experienced in providing engineering services of the kind indicated. Engineering services are defined as those performed for installations of fire-suppression piping that are similar to those indicated for this Project in material, design, and extent LK 15173

6 D. Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms whose equipment, specialties, and accessories are listed by product name and manufacturer in UL's "Fire Protection Equipment Directory" and FM's "Fire Protection Approval Guide" and that comply with other requirements indicated. E. Standpipe and Sprinkler Components: Listing/approval stamp, label, or other marking by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. F. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. G. NFPA Standards: Equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing complying with the following: 1. NFPA 13R, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies. 2. NFPA 14, "Standpipe and Hose Systems." 3. NFPA 20, Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps. 4. NFPA 25, Inspecting, Testing, and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection Systems. 5. NFPA 96, Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations. H. If a fire pump is required, the manufacturer shall provide the services of a qualified Field Engineer to assist in the proper installation of equipment, make necessary mechanical adjustments, and align fire pump flexible coupling. Arrange, conduct and provide all required test equipment for Field Acceptance Test. Test shall be witnessed by the Fire Marshal and the authority having jurisdiction and Factory Mutual and the Owner. I. The Fire Protection Subcontractor shall be responsible for reviewing the complete set of Contract Documents and coordinating his work with all other trades involved including building design loads. J. Sprinkler head locations shall be as shown on the Architectural Reflected Ceiling Plans. If the Contractor finds that additional sprinklers are required to meet Codes or Factory Mutual requirements, he shall proceed with the additional heads at no additional cost to the Owner. K. The fire protection piping and head layout shall function in such a manner so as not to interfere with lighting fixtures, air distribution devices, equipment, piping, beams, and ductwork. The work under this section shall yield to all other trades. 1.7 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents LK 15173

Refer to Division 15 Section "Valves" for gate, ball, butterfly, globe, and check valves not required to be UL listed and FM approved. 2.8 FIRE-PROTECTION-SERVICE VALVES A. General: UL listed and FM approved, with minimum 175-psig (1200-kPa) nonshock working-pressure rating. Valves for grooved-end piping may be furnished with grooved ends instead of type of ends specified. B. Gate Valves, NPS 2 (DN50) and Smaller: UL 262; cast-bronze, threaded ends; solid wedge; OS&Y; and rising stem. C. Indicating Valves, NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and Smaller: UL 1091; butterfly or ball-type, bronze body with threaded ends; and integral indicating device. D. Indicator: Visual. E. Indicator: Electrical 115-V ac, prewired, single-circuit, supervisory switch. F. Indicator: Electrical 115-V ac, prewired, two-circuit, supervisory switch. G. Split-Clapper Check Valves, NPS 4 (DN100) and Larger: UL 312, cast-iron body with rubber seal, bronze-alloy discs, and stainless-steel spring and hinge pin. 2.9 SPECIALTY VALVES A. Alarm Check Valves: UL 193, 175-psig (1200-kPa) working pressure; designed for horizontal or vertical installation, with cast-iron flanged inlet and outlet, bronze grooved seat with O-ring seals, and single-hinge pin and latch design. Include trim sets for bypass, drain, electric sprinkler alarm switch, pressure gages, retarding chamber, and fill-line attachment with strainer. 1. Option: Grooved-end connections for use with keyed couplings. 2. Drip Cup Assembly: Pipe drain with check valve to main drain piping. B. Dry-Pipe Valves: UL 260; differential type; 175-psig (1200-kPa) working pressure; with cast-iron flanged inlet and outlet, bronze seat with O-ring seals, and single-hinge pin and latch design. Include UL 1486, quick-opening devices, trim sets for air supply, drain, priming level, alarm connections, ball drip valves, pressure gages, priming chamber attachment, and fill-line attachment. 1. Option: Grooved-end connections for use with keyed couplings. 2. Air-Pressure Maintenance Devices: Automatic device to maintain correct air pressure in piping. Include shutoff valves to permit servicing without shutting down sprinkler piping, bypass valve for quick filling, pressure regulator or switch to maintain pressure, strainer, pressure ratings with 14- to 60-psig (95- to 410-kPa) adjustable range, and 175-psig (1200- kpa) maximum inlet pressure. 3. Air Compressor: Fractional horsepower, 120-V ac, 60 Hz, single phase. C. Pressure-Regulating Valves: UL 1468, 400-psig (2760-kPa) minimum rating, brass. Include NPS 1-1/2 or NPS 2-1/2 (DN40 or DN65), female NPS inlet and outlet; adjustable setting feature; and straight or 90-degree angle pattern design as indicated. 1. Finish: Rough chrome-plated. D. Ball Drip Valves: UL 1726, automatic drain valve, NPS 3/4 (DN20), ball check device with threaded ends SPRINKLERS A. Automatic Sprinklers: With heat-responsive element complying with the following: 1. UL 199, for applications except residential. 2. UL 1767, for early suppression, fast-response applications. 3. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping installation. B. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with Owner s Representative before deviating from approved working plans. C. Install underground service-entrance piping according to NFPA 24 and with restrained joints. D. Use approved fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. E. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 (DN50) and smaller. Unions are not required on flanged devices or in piping installations using grooved joints. F. Install flanges or flange adapters on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 (DN65) and larger connections. G. Install "Inspector's Test Connections" in sprinkler piping, complete with shutoff valve, sized and located according to NFPA 13R. H. Install sprinkler piping with drains for complete system drainage. I. Install sprinkler zone control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers adjacent to standpipes when sprinkler piping is connected to standpipes. J. Install drain valves on standpipes. K. Install ball drip valves to drain piping between fire department connections and check valves. Drain to floor drain or outside building. L. Install alarm devices in piping systems. M.
