2 FLV 40 UV FLAME DETECTOR TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS The FLV40 Flame Detector is able to detect a flame produced inside its viewing range in a few seconds. Its installation is very simple and can be done in a few minutes. To obtain the best results we suggest to read the instructions below entirely and to follow the procedures described carefully. 1 - The FLV40 reacts with great sensitivity to Ultraviolet radiations emitted by an adequately powerful source located in its viewing range. 2 - The device must be installed on a wall or on the ceiling. Normally, to surveil goods located on the floor, the ceiling installation is suggested. 3 - The installation height is relative to the area to be protected considering that the detector's viewing range is about 60 and that the maximum distance for flame detection (for a petrol generated flame with a target of 20 x 20 x 5 cm square steel tray) it's 20 m. The fig. 3 e 4 diagrams indicate the diameter and the covered area related to the installation height. 4 - Take the front cover off (where the aluminium cone with the sensor is located) taking off the four screws located in the cover's corners. Be careful in handling the cover with the sensor mounted as a shock could damage it permanently. 5 - Make a hole, with the desired diameter, on the bottom of the plastic box and fix the cable gland tightly in order to obtain the best possible grade of protection against dust and dirt that are dangerous for the inside electronics on a long period of time done as outlined in fig select the power supply voltage by positioning the JP2 jumper in as follows: position 1-2 = supply voltage 24 V dc position 2-3 =supply voltage 12 V dc 9 - select the output relay working mode by positioning the JP1 jumper as follows: position 1-2 = normally not powered position 2-3 = normally powered 10 - adjust the alarm delay ( between 5 and 15 seconds) to the desiterd valur turning the TR1 trimmer 11 - Be careful when the circuit is powered. In fact an high voltage is generated on some parts and so the connecting and maintenance operations must be carried out with the device unpowered After the installing and adjusting operations are over a working test can be done (if the environment conditions permit it). In order to do this test, after powering the device, it is necessary to produce a flame with gasoline on a 20x20x5 cm square steel tray positioned at the extremity of the maximum area that the detector can cover. After the selected alarm delay time an alarm output should be produced. This test must be carried out carefully on high surveillance. 6 - Mount the box on the ceiling as outlined in the enclosed diagram (fig.1-2) 7 - Insert the connection cable inside the box and connect it to the terminal board located on the circuit board inside the cover. 4 USAGE WARNINGS The UV sensor contained in the FLV40 flame detector can be damaged if exposed to high vibrations or shocks. In particular the glass bulb and the electrodes can beaffected by deformations. This fact can cause a serious loss of performance, faulty functioning and even permanently damage the device. All the UV sensor have been tested for vibrations and shocks as follows: - vibrational test: from 0 to 500Hz/0.06" in conformity to MIL-STD-202F method 204D - shock test: 100G/11ms, sinusoidal in conformity to MIL-STD-202F method 213B A wrong usage can get the UV sensor to be exposed to levels of vibrations and shocks higher than those of these tests. For example an accidental fall can cause permanent damages to the UV sensor. So it is nesessary to handle the device with the maximum care. INSTALLATION WARNINGS The FLV40 detector can be influenced by ultraviolet radiations different from those produced by flames. In fact there are many different types of UV radiation sources. The list below shows several types of uv sources that can be commonly found in nature. - sun light (the ultraviolet radiation intensity varies with the seasons, day time and geographic position of the site) - sparks generated during arc welding (these sparks emit high intensity UV radiations) - electric sparks (like those generated by engines or train pantographs) - sterilization lamps (like mercury low-pressure lamps) - halogen lamps (like the lenticular reflector spotlights) - high colour rendering lamps like xenon lamps and metal vapours lamps Keep in mind, during the installing, that when the UV sensor detects the presence of ultraviolet radiation it becomes an UV source itself. So if more than one UV flame detectors are installed in the same room, it is better not to install the detectors facing each other (on two opposite sides for example) to avoid that the alarm signal of one detector is transmitted to the other one. So they don't have to look to each other.. WARNING The FLV40 detector has an high sensitivity and so it can reveal UV radiations generated by unwanted sources. To avoid this problem it is enough to eliminate any extraneous UV sources from the environment where the detector is installed.
