2 an act of collective wisdom Marc Ventre, AFNOR Chairman Olivier Peyrat, AFNOR Managing Director Voluntary standardization is a form of collective wisdom is a statement extracted from the book published by AFNOR Publishing at the beginning of 2017, which tells 30 exceptional stories of 30 standards that have changed history and the way we live. In fact, all of these documents were the result of a consensus reached following discussions between stakeholders themselves: this form of mutually profitable, joint creation was the complete opposite of any authoritarian process. In this framework, market players benefit, as do citizens and end consumers: voluntary standards protect people and investments, facilitate everyday life, promote confidence and exchanges, and enable players involved in their development or implementation to remain a step ahead. All this has been demonstrated by the various economic studies that have been undertaken over the past years. In this context, we do not think that there are too many voluntary standards! Again in 2017, AFNOR strove to refute this popular notion that merges hard law (laws, regulations) with soft law (voluntary standards). Such a notion causes the pool containing 34,000 voluntary standards, most of which arose from European or international work and are monitored by AFNOR and its partners on a daily basis, to melt into the pot filled with hundreds of thousands of primarily national regulatory standards. In 2018, in an ever-more digital environment, we will continue the work of persuasion and education that is already under way. We are more and more frequently picking up encouraging signals. Productive contacts have been established in Parliament, with a particular reference to the Senatorial Delegation for Companies. We are very grateful to all of the stakeholders involved in voluntary standardization!
