2 Welcome to the 56th annual Training Conference sponsored by the Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association and cohosted by North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue, Depoe Bay RFPD, Newport Fire Department, Nestucca RFPD, Toledo Fire Department, Siletz RFPD, Seal Rock RFPD, and Yachats RFPD. I want to personally invite your department to send as many representatives as you can to this conference. Bring your family to enjoy attractions in the area such as shopping, movie theaters, the Hatfield Marine Service Center, the Historic Newport Bay Front, Nye Beach, deep sea fishing, Oregon Coast Aquarium, glass blowing, the Undersea Gardens, the Wax Works, golfing, many other exciting opportunities. Come early or plan to stay an extra day to enjoy all this scenic area has to offer. The OVFA Conference Committee and our host departments have been working hard to put together a high quality conference of exciting classes that could make this one of the best ever. Classes this year include two EMS classes and a safety officer class, as well as courses in vehicle extrication, strategy and tactics, and officer development. As always we offer several options for classes including one, two, and three day classes. If you can't make it for the full conference, consider joining us for a one or two day class. All registrations include breakfast and lunch for each day. A full conference registration will include a conference t shirt and a ticket to the OVFA banquet on Friday night at the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort facility. Additional banquet tickets can be purchased in advance for guests. We have an exciting Keynote Speaker for our Banquet this year; you ll have to attend to find out who it is! Wednesday our host departments are planning a beach side BBQ dinner and social. Your conference registration includes one ticket for the BBQ; additional tickets can be purchased for guests. Our Vendor and Apparatus Show will be Thursday evening at the Chinook Winds Casino & Resort. Come by and meet with a wide selection of fire service vendors while you browse for bargains at the Silent Auction. Join us Friday evening for our annual banquet to announce the Firefighter of the Year and Lifetime Achievement winners and install your newly elected board. 4 Car Fire Safety Program DPSST Staff Vehicle Fire Safety Class This course will instruct students on how to attack a passenger vehicle fire operating as a member of a team, given personal protective equipment, attack line, and hand tools, so that hazards are avoided, leaking flammable liquids are identified and controlled, protection from flash fires is maintained, all vehicle compartments are overhauled, and the fire is extinguished. The students will learn the principles of fire streams as they relate to fighting automobile fires; precautions to be followed when advancing hose lines toward an automobile; observable results that a fire stream has been properly applied; identifying alternative fuels and the hazards associated with them; dangerous conditions created during an automobile fire; common types of accidents or injuries related to fighting automobile fires and how to avoid them; how to access locked passenger, trunk, and engine compartments; and methods for overhauling an automobile. The students will also be given the ability to identify automobile fuel type; assess and control fuel leaks; open, close, and adjust the flow and pattern on nozzles; apply water for maximum effectiveness while maintaining flash fire protection; advance 1.5 in. or larger diameter attack lines; and expose hidden fires by opening all automobile compartments. All students participating in the Vehicle Fire Safety program are required to meet OR-OSHA Respiratory Standards, Div. 2L The standard requires all personnel who wear SCBA to have been fit tested and meet the medical evaluation requirements for respirator use. If you have visible facial hair between your skin and the seal area of the face piece you will not be able to participate in the practical evolutions. You are, however, welcome to participate in the classroom session. Day: 1-day Friday Only Class Size: Requirements: See specific notes above about class requirements. Advanced Fire Behavior Captain Tom Crowder After completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate basic understanding of the fire environment in order to learn Intermediate Fire Behavior concepts. This class will count towards the chemistry portion of Fire Officer 1. Days: 2-day class Thursday and Friday Course Descriptions Safety Officer Dale Kamrath After completion of this course, the student will have an overview of the roles, responsibilities, qualifications, and standards applicable to the Incident Safety Officer. Days: 3-day class Thursday, Friday, and Saturday EMS Trauma Tina Greiner This class will focus on trauma-related topics and cover many of the trauma topics needed to renew your EMR, EMT and Intermediate/Advanced certificate. We ll go over trauma from identifying and classifying a trauma patient to proper packaging and treatment of that patient. Days: 1-day class Friday or Saturday Vehicle Extrication Tom McGowan This course is designed to meet the requirements of the NFPA 1670 Operations Level Course for Vehicle Extrication. It is geared toward both beginners and more experienced rescue workers, as it includes reviews of new vehicle technology, including: anatomy, airbags, pre-tensioners, and hybrid vehicles. Students will participate in both classroom lecture/discussion and in hands on, putting the lessons learned inside to work. They will learn techniques designed to take advantage and conquer today s vehicles. Hands-on will include scenarios with vehicles on their tires, side, and on their top. PT care and removal will also be addressed during this class. These hours can be applied to EMS recertification hours. Days: 1-day class Thursday, Friday, or Saturday Class Size: 16 students Requirements: Full PPE/turnouts Don t forget about the live auction held after the Banquet Friday evening. All proceeds from the live auction are donated to the Oregon Burn Center. If you would like to contribute items to either the silent auction or the live auction please bring them to the registration desk when you check in.
5 Truck Aerial Operations Jaime Mason To provide the knowledge and skills to operate a fire department aerial ladder truck and associated equipment. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to safely and effectively operate an aerial ladder at a fire or emergency scene. Days: 1-day class Friday or Saturday Fire Officer Development George Dunkel This fire officer development course is designed to help the aspiring, new, or existing fire officer in their duties. The course will cover basic principles of budgeting, personnel management, laws that affect the fire officer, leadership, management, incident command, and other things needed to function in the fire officer role. This class will give the fire officer a practical approach to being the leader and give them many tools to help keep them out of trouble. This class will touch on many topics in NFPA Strategies and Tactics Chief Dan Woodson This Strategy and Tactics course will get the student involved in the operations at emergency scenes. The course will cover the incident command system, the priorities that the IC needs to accomplish, basic management of the emergency scene and the tactics and strategies to bring the incident to a successful and safe conclusion. Days: 1-day class Thursday or Saturday EMS Medical Trisha Moore This class will focus on medical topics and cover many of the medical topics needed to renew your EMR, EMT and Intermediate/Advanced certificate. We ll go over trauma from identifying and classifying a trauma patient to proper packaging and treatment of that patient. Days: 1-day class Thursday or Friday Days: 2-day class Friday and Saturday New Training Officer Class Julie Olsen Fink DPSST After completion of this course, the student will have an overview of the roles, responsibilities, qualifications, and standards applicable to the Training Officer. Day: 1-day class Thursday Only Join us Thursday night for our Annual Vendor & Apparatus Show. Fire service & local vendors will be on hand to show off their latest equipment and saleables. Again this year we will be combining our Silent Auction with the Vendor & Apparatus show. All proceeds from the silent auction will go to the OVFA Volunteer Relief Fund to help injured volunteers and their families.
