Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section includes wet-pipe sprinkler system, system design, installation, and certification. The entire system shall be installed in conformance with NFPA 13. B. Section Includes: 1. Pipes, fittings, and specialties. 2. Fire-department connections. 3. Sprinklers. 4. Alarm devices. 5. Pressure gages. 6. Hangers and supports. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Standard-Pressure Sprinkler Piping: Wet-pipe sprinkler system piping designed to operate at working pressure of 175 psig maximum. 1.4 REFERENCES A. International Building Code, 2015 B. Requirements of Owner Insurance Underwriter and Other Authorities Having Jurisdiction as applicable. 1.5 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS A. Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water that is connected to the water supply through an alarm valve. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts the fusible link or destroys the frangible device. Hose connections are included if indicated. System to provide coverage for all areas in the building except those noted on the contract documents. B. Provide hydraulically designed system to NFPA 13 occupancy requirements. Provide all sprinkler risers with hydraulic data plate with system design information. Mount to respective riser. This data plate shall include the location of the design area or areas, discharge densities over the design area or areas, required flow and residual pressure demand at the base of the riser, occupancy classification or commodity classification and maximum permitted storage height/configuration, and hose stream demand included in addition to the sprinkler demand. C. Water supply data by flow test at 10 in. underground main located on East Road indicates: 47 psi static and 35 psi residual with 488 gpm flow. Contractor shall perform flow test per NFPA 291 to verify available supply. D. Interface system with building fire alarm system. E. Sprinkler system shall be hydraulically calculated. Pipe sizes shown on drawings shall be maintained and used in calculations. F. Light Hazard Design Criteria: 0.10 gpm/ft2 over 1500 ft2 design area with an outside hose stream demand of 100 gpm for a duration of 30 minutes. G. Ordinary Hazard Group 1 Design Criteria: 0.15 gpm/ft2 over 1500 ft2 design area with an outside hose stream demand of 250 gpm for a duration of minutes. H. Ordinary Hazard Group 2 Design Criteria: 0.20 gpm/ft2 over 1500 ft2 design area with an outside hose stream demand of 250 gpm for a duration of minutes. I. Sprinkler spacing shall not exceed 196 ft2 for Light Hazard and130 ft2 for Ordinary Hazard. J. A 10 psi safety factor shall be incorporated into all hydraulic calculations. 9 K. Maximum 20 fps system flow velocity and 15 fps in mains with paddle waterflow switches. 1.6 PROJECT SCOPE A. Provide an automatic wet-pipe sprinkler system throughout the building as indicated on the contract documents. 1.7 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Standard-Pressure Piping System Component: Listed for 175-psig minimum working pressure. B. Sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Sprinkler Occupancy Hazard Classifications: a. Instructional/Fabrication Labs: Ordinary Hazard, Group 2. b. Mechatronics Classrooms: Ordinary Hazard, Group 1. c. Mech/Elec/General Storage Areas and Similar Spaces: Ordinary Hazard, Group 1. d. Classrooms/Corridors/Offices/Conference Rooms and Similar Spaces: Light Hazard. 1.8 SUBMITTALS A. Submittal Procedures: Submittal procedures as indicated in Division 1 of these specifications. B. Shop Drawings: NFPA 13 drawings, hydraulic calculations for each design area with cross reference to applicable drawings, water supply data, and equipment schedule. Indicate layout of finished ceiling areas indicating sprinkler locations coordinated with ceiling installation. Indicate detailed pipe layout, hangers and supports, sprinklers, components and accessories. Indicate system controls. Provide coordination drawings indicating the work of other trades. 1. Sprinklers shall be referred to on drawings, submittals and other documentation, by the sprinkler identification or Model number as specifically published in the appropriate agency listing or approval. Trade names or other abbreviated designations shall not be allowed. C. Product Data: Submit data on sprinklers, valves, and specialties, including manufacturers catalog information. Submit performance ratings, rough-in details, weights, support requirements, and piping connections. D. Fire Hydrant Flow Test Report: Prior to system layout, submit detailed fire flow test data per NFPA 291. Include scaled/dimensioned drawing showing flow/pressure locations/elevations; number/size/coefficient for orifices; pitot/static/residual pressures; test time/date; main sizes. E. Approved sprinkler drawings: working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction and owner s representative, including hydraulic calculations. 10 F. Submit firestopping system and material product data and UL listed firestopping details to be utilized for the project. 1.9 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS A. Execution Requirements: Closeout procedures as indicated in division 1 of these specifications. B. Project Record Documents: Record actual locations of sprinklers and deviations of piping from drawings. Indicate drain and test locations. C. Operation and Maintenance Data: Submit components of system, servicing requirements, record drawings, inspection data, replacement part numbers and availability, and location and numbers of service depot. D. Submit the latest edition of NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water Based Fire Protection System to the owner upon completion of project. E. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include Contractor s Material and Test Certificate for Above Ground Piping. F. Schedule of preventative maintenance inspections/testing and outline of what inspections/testing shall occur QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this section with minimum three years documented experience, and with service facilities within 100 miles of project. B. Installer: Company specializing and licensed in performing work of this section with minimum five years documented experience and NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certified. C. System shall be designed and installed under the direct supervision of a NICET Level IV certified designer in Fire Protection/Automatic Sprinkler System Layout. D. Firestop Installer Qualifications: FM 4991, UL, or proof of certified training. E. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application MAINTENANCE SERVICE A. Furnish service and maintenance of the system components for one year from the Date of Substantial Completion as outlined in Division 21 specifications. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

11 1.12 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of sprinklers with other construction that penetrates ceilings, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, and partition assemblies EXTRA MATERIALS A. Provide extra sprinklers as required by NFPA 13. B. Provide suitable wrenches for each sprinkler type. C. Provide metal storage cabinet located adjacent to sprinkler riser. D. Provide all manufacturer special tools for maintenance of system ADDITIONAL SPRINKLERS AND GUARDS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. B. Provide [insert value] additional sprinklers with associated piping and supports and [insert value] additional sprinkler guards installed at locations where directed and where job conditions may require. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PIPING MATERIALS A. Comply with requirements in "Piping Schedule" Article for applications of pipe, tube, and fitting materials, and for joining methods for specific services, service locations, and pipe sizes. 2.2 STEEL PIPE AND FITTINGS A. Standard Weight, Galvanized and/or Black Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, or ASTM A 135, ASTM A 795, Schedule 40 for NPS 2 and smaller. Pipe ends may be factory or field formed to match joining method. B. Standard Weight, Galvanized and/or Black Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, or ASTM A 135, ASTM A 795, Schedule 10 for NPS 2.5 and larger. Pipe ends may be factory or field formed to match joining method C. Black-Steel Pipe Nipples: ASTM A 733, made of ASTM A 53/A 53M, standard-weight, seamless steel pipe with threaded ends. D. Riser Check Valve: Designed for horizontal or vertical installation, with bronze groove seat with O-ring seals, single hinge pin, and latch design. Include trim sets for drain and pressure gauges. C. Riser Manifold Assembly: Shall be a manufactured assembly fabricated from carbon steel piping with integral grooved ends with an orange enamel finish. Assembly shall include an alarm test module combination inspector s test/drain valve of bronze construction complete with dual integral sight glasses and a standard ½ test orifice and allow single handle operation for both test and drain functions. The backflow prevention valve assembly shall be provided with a means of testing the backflow prevention assembly for forward flow tests at system demand. Provide one (1) 2-1/2 national standard threaded male connection with integral valve for every 250 gallons per minute of system demand. 2.8 FIRE-DEPARTMENT CONNECTIONS A. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Perform fire-hydrant flow test according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 291. Use results for system design calculations required in "Systems Description Article. B. Report test results promptly and in writing. 3.2 SERVICE-ENTRANCE PIPING A. Connect sprinkler piping to water-service piping for service entrance to building. B. Install backflow preventer, pressure gage, drain, and other accessories indicated at connection to water-service piping. C. Install shutoff valve, check valve, pressure gage, and drain at connection to water service. 3.3 PIPING INSTALLATION A. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with Architect before deviating from approved working plans. 22 2. Install piping to minimize obstructions to other trades. 3. Install piping concealed above finished ceilings unless noted otherwise. 4. Pipe size called for shall be maintained. Pipe size changes made only as reviewed by owner s representative. Where discrepancy in size occurs, the larger size shall be provided. B. Piping Standard: Comply with requirements for installation of sprinkler piping in NFPA 13. C. Use listed fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. D. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. E. Install flanges, flange adapters, or couplings for grooved-end piping on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger end connections. F. Install "Inspector's Test Connections" in sprinkler system piping, complete with shutoff valve, and sized and located according to NFPA 13. G. Install sprinkler piping with drains for complete system drainage. H. Install sprinkler control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers adjacent to standpipes when sprinkler piping is connected to standpipes. I. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for fire-department connection, to drain piping between fire-department connection and check valve. Install drain piping to and spill over floor drain or to outside building. J. Install alarm devices in piping systems. K. Install hangers and supports for sprinkler system piping according to NFPA 13. Comply with requirements for hanger materials in NFPA 13. L. Install pressure gages on riser or feed main, at each sprinkler test connection, and at top of each standpipe. Include pressure gages with connection not less than NPS 1/4 and with soft metal seated globe valve, arranged for draining pipe between gage and valve. Install gages to permit removal, and install where they will not be subject to freezing. M. Fill sprinkler system piping with water. N. Install sleeves for piping penetrations of walls, ceilings, and floors. O. Install sleeve seals for piping penetrations of concrete walls and slabs. P. Install escutcheons for piping penetrations of walls, ceilings, and floors. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

23 3.4 JOINT CONSTRUCTION A. Install couplings, flanges, flanged fittings, unions, nipples, and transition and special fittings that have finish and pressure ratings same as or higher than system's pressure rating for aboveground applications unless otherwise indicated. B. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. C. Install flanges, flange adapters, or couplings for grooved-end piping on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger end connections. D. Ream ends of pipes and tubes and remove burrs. Bevel plain ends of steel pipe. E. Remove scale, slag, dirt, and debris from inside and outside of pipes, tubes, and fittings before assembly. F. Flanged Joints: Select appropriate gasket material in size, type, and thickness suitable for water service. Join flanges with gasket and bolts according to ASME B31.9. G. Threaded Joints: Thread pipe with tapered pipe threads according to ASME B Cut threads full and clean using sharp dies. Ream threaded pipe ends to remove burrs and restore full ID. Join pipe fittings and valves as follows: 1. Apply appropriate tape or thread compound to external pipe threads. 2. Damaged Threads: Do not use pipe or pipe fittings with threads that are corroded or damaged. H. Welded Joints: Construct joints according to AWS D10.12M/D10.12, using qualified processes and welding operators according to "Quality Assurance" Article. 1. Shop weld pipe joints where welded piping is indicated. Do not use welded joints for galvanized-steel pipe. I. Steel-Piping, Roll-Grooved Joints: Roll rounded-edge groove in end of pipe according to AWWA C606. Assemble coupling with housing, gasket, lubricant, and bolts. Join steel pipe and grooved-end fittings according to AWWA C606 for steel-pipe grooved joints. J. Dissimilar-Material Piping Joints: Make joints using adapters compatible with materials of both piping systems. 3.5 VALVE AND SPECIALTIES INSTALLATION A. Install listed fire-protection valves, trim and drain valves, specialty valves and trim, controls, and specialties according to NFPA 13 and authorities having jurisdiction. B. Install listed fire-protection shutoff valves supervised open, located to control sources of water supply except from fire-department connections. Install permanent identification signs indicating portion of system controlled by each valve. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

24 C. Install check valve in each water-supply connection. Install backflow preventers instead of check valves in potable-water-supply sources. D. Auxiliary drains shall be provided where a change in piping direction prevents drainage of system piping through the main drain valve. 1. Where the capacity of isolated trapped sections of pipe is 50 gallons or more, the auxiliary drain shall consist of a valve not smaller than 1, accessibly located (no more than 7 feet above finished floor). 2. Where the capacity of isolated trapped sections of pipe is more than 5 gallons and less than 50 gallons, the auxiliary drain shall consist of a valve ¾ or larger and a plug or nipple and cap. E. Specialty Valves: 1. General Requirements: Install in vertical position for proper direction of flow, in main supply to system. 3.6 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION A. Install sprinklers in suspended ceilings in center of narrow dimension of acoustical ceiling panels. B. Install dry-type sprinklers with water supply from heated space. Do not install pendent or sidewall, wet-type sprinklers in areas subject to freezing. C. Install sprinklers into flexible, sprinkler hose fittings and install hose into bracket on ceiling grid. D. The sprinkler bulb protector must remain in place until the sprinkler is completely installed and before the system is placed in service. Failure to follow this instruction could cause damage to the glass bulb, resulting in improper sprinkler operation, serious personal injury and property damage. Remove bulb protectors carefully by hand after installation. Do not use any tools to remove bulb protectors. E. Do not install sprinklers that have been dropped, damaged, or show a visible loss of fluid. Never install sprinklers with cracked bulbs. F. Provide protection in electric, telephone, elevator equipment, and electronic equipment spaces. Piping shall not pass directly over electric panel boards, switchboards, motor control centers, elevator rooms/hoist ways, controllers, and similar electric/telephone equipment. G. Provide guards for sprinklers in mechanical, storage, closet, and similar spaces than 8-0 above finished floor. H. Provide protection under ductwork, groups of ductwork, and other obstructions to water spray distribution. Use intermediate level sprinklers if subject to water spray from above. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

25 3.7 FIRE-DEPARTMENT CONNECTION INSTALLATION A. Install wall-type, fire-department connections. Located as indicated on contract drawings. B. The fire department connection shall be provided with an automatic ball drip assembly to prevent freezing. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for firedepartment connection. Each fire department connection shall be provided with a listed check valve. C. Inlets: Coordinate fire department connection inlet type with local fire department and authority having jurisdiction. Fire department connection shall be a 2-1/2 Siamese with National Standard Threads unless otherwise specified by the local fire department. Provide chained caps. The fire department connection shall be located not less than 18 and not more than 48 above finished grade. The size of the fire department connection pipe shall be a minimum of 4 or for a hydraulically calculated system no less than the size of the system riser where one riser is being served. D. The fire department connection shall be piped to the system side of the alarm check valve. For combined systems, the fire department connection shall be connected between the supply control valves and the system control valves. E. Locate fire department connection with sufficient clearance from walls, obstructions, or to allow full swing of fire department wrench handle. Coordinate location with local fire department. F. Install a 30 elbow between the inlet pipe stubbing outside of the building/stand alone connection and the fire department connection at all fire department connections to prevent fire department hose kinking. 3.8 IDENTIFICATION A. Install labeling and pipe markers on equipment and piping according to requirements in NFPA 13. B. Identify system components, wiring, cabling, and terminals. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems." C. Provide sign at or near fire department connection a minimum of an 18 by 18 reflective diagrammatic sign meeting NFPA 170 requirements. The sign shall also indicate the building name and address in which it services, systems within the building in which it serves, and the pressure required at the inlets to deliver the greatest system demand. D. Valve Signage: 1. All main and sectional system control valves, including water supply control valves, shall have a sign indicating the portion of the system that is controlled by the valve. 2. All control, drain, and test connection valves shall be provided with signs indicating their purpose. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

26 3. Where a main or section control valve is located in a closed room or concealed space, the location of the valve shall be indicated by a sign in an approved location on the outside of the door or near the opening to the concealed space. 3.9 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform tests and inspections. B. Final Acceptance/Commissioning Test: The system will be accepted only after satisfactory test of the entire system has been accomplished by the Contractor at the direction of the C&S Engineers, Inc., in the presence of the Authority Having Jurisdiction and the Owner. The Contractor shall notify the above witnesses, in writing, 72 hours prior to the commencement of testing. Failure to contact the above parties will require the Contractor to conduct tests a second time at the Contractor s expense in the presence of the above parties. C&S Engineers, Inc. shall have complete direction over the final acceptance/commissioning test of the system. C. Water flow detecting devices including the associated alarm circuits shall be flow tested through the inspector s test connection and shall result in an audible alarm on the premises within 5 minutes after such flow begins and until such flow stops. D. The main drain valve shall be opened and remain open until the system pressure stabilizes. Static and residual pressures shall be recorded. E. Tests and Inspections: 1. Leak Test: After installation, charge systems and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until no leaks exist. 2. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls and equipment. 3. Flush, test, and inspect sprinkler systems according to NFPA 13, "Systems Acceptance" Chapter. 4. Energize circuits to electrical equipment and devices. 5. Coordinate with fire-alarm tests. Operate as required. 6. Verify that equipment hose threads are same as local fire-department equipment. F. Sprinkler piping system will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections. G. Prepare test and inspection reports. H. Test backflow preventer in accordance with NFPA 13, Systems Acceptance chapter INTERFACE WITH OTHER PRODUCTS A. Verify signal devices are installed and connected to fire alarm system. 27 3.11 PROTECTION OF INSTALLED CONSTRUCTION A. Apply masking tape or paper cover to protect concealed sprinklers, cover plates, and sprinkler escutcheons not receiving field paint finish. Remove after painting. Replace painted sprinklers with new CLEANING A. Clean dirt and debris from sprinklers. B. Remove and replace sprinklers with paint other than factory finish DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING A. The Contractor shall provide a minimum of 2 hours of instruction and operation, and maintenance of all elements of the materials and methods specified above for non-technician personnel prior to the commissioning of the building fire suppression system. All training shall take place prior to final acceptance testing of the system. All demonstration and training provided to Owner personnel shall be witnessed by the C&S Engineers, Inc. construction management representative. The Contractor shall notify the above witnesses, in writing, 72 hours prior to the commencement of testing. Failure to contact the above parties will require the Contractor to conduct training a second time at the contractor s expense in the presence of the above parties. B. Instruction shall be provided by a material or system manufacturer s certified representative familiar with the equipment and special operating requirements of the system provided and the Owner s operating procedures. C. Instructions shall include classroom training as well as hands on training of all components of the system and their operation. D. Instruction shall be made available on a schedule acceptable to the Owner and the availability of the operating personnel. Instructions shall be in two separate groupings with the last instruction time frame 30 days after the second grouping. This is to allow the operating personnel to familiarize themselves with the equipment and get follow-up training as required. The last training session shall be a minimum of 1 hour(s). E. Contractor shall be responsible for providing sufficient training materials for all present at the training session, (minimum 15 personnel). Coordinate actual requirements with the Owner at time of training. F. The Contractor shall be responsible for providing videotaped training sessions, which will be submitted to the owner for future employee training. All of the training sessions conducted shall be videotaped. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

28 3.14 PIPING SCHEDULE A. Piping between Fire-Department Connections and Check Valves: Galvanized, standard-weight steel pipe with grooved ends; grooved-end fittings; grooved-end-pipe couplings; and grooved joints. B. Sprinkler specialty fittings may be used, downstream of control valves, instead of specified fittings. C. Standard-pressure, wet-pipe sprinkler system, NPS 2 and smaller, shall be the 1. Standard-weight, Schedule 40, black-steel pipe with threaded ends; uncoated, gray-iron threaded fittings; and threaded joints. Use galvanized pipe where exposed to exterior. D. Standard-pressure, wet-pipe sprinkler system, NPS 2-1/2 and larger shall be the 1. Standard-weight, Schedule 10, black-steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; uncoated, grooved-end fittings for steel piping; grooved-end-pipe couplings for steel piping; and grooved joints SPRINKLER SCHEDULE A. Use sprinkler types in subparagraphs below for the following applications: 1. Rooms without Ceilings: Upright sprinklers. 2. Rooms with Suspended Ceilings: Semi-recessed pendent. 3.
