VISIBLE SIGNAL For rooms larger than 20 m², the Strobe Light should be located within 4.88m of the pillow. SUPPLEMENTARY VISIBLE SIGNAL The Strobe Light may be located less than 2m above the floor. ATTENTION! The model SL240 Strobe Light is designed to notify hearing impaired individuals of impending danger. They MUST be used in conjunction with operating Smoke or Heat Alarms. The model SL240 is a 3-wire multiple station device and will directly interface with LIFESAVER 3-wire multiple station Smoke Alarms and Heat Alarms. 3. RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS OF VISUAL SIGNALLING DEVICES 3.1 Locate the first Strobe Light in the bedroom in which the hearing impaired individual sleeps. If the bedroom door is kept closed at night, an interconnecting Smoke Alarm must also be installed in that bedroom. 3.2 Locate additional Strobe Light in any lived-in room where the hearing impaired individual would need to be notified of an alarm condition. 4. LOCATIONS TO AVOID 4.1 In direct sunlight or high ambient light areas, this brightness may reduce one s ability to notice the Strobe Light. 4.2 In areas where the temperature may fall below 0 C or rise above 49 C. 4.3 In areas with high humidity. 4.4 Avoid outdoor locations. (This device is not listed or designed for outdoor use). 5. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY 5.1 WIRING REQUIREMENTS This Strobe Light should be installed with an AS approved Junction box. All connections should be made by a qualified electrician and must be in accordance with the relevant requirements of the SAA Wiring Rules AS3000 Standards and / or any other codes having jurisdiction in your area The appropriate power source is 240Vac 50 Hz. continuous single phase sine wave current supplied from a non-switched circuit which is not protected by a RCD. 5.2 MODEL SL240 WIRING INSTRUCTIONS: FOR A.C. QUICK CONNECT HARNESS. A trim ring is provided on the back of the Strobe Light. This trim ring is removed by holding the trim ring and twisting the Strobe Light in the direction indicated by the OFF arrow CAUTION! ISOLATE THE MAINS POWER TO THE CIRCUIT BEFORE WIRING THE STROBE LIGHT Secure a suitable junction box near the position of the Strobe Light, ensure the quick connect cable length is long enough to reach the junction box for termination to be made. 2
3 5.2.2 Connect Active, Neutral and Switch line to the Strobe Light cable using the terminal connection block provided. secure these terminals inside the junction box Punch out the suitable fixing holes on the trim ring and then pull the AC connector through the centre of the trim ring Secure the trim ring to the ceiling using the fixing holes provided Plug in the AC connector into the back of the strobe Light. Ensure the locks on the AC connector n snap firmly into place Now mount the Strobe Light onto the trim ring. Alignment marks are provided on the side of the Strobe Light and on the trim for correct mounting. Rotate the Strobe Light in the direction of the ON arrow on the cover until the Strobe Light locks into place NOTE: For concrete or surface fixing of Strobe Light use SMOTEC Surface Mounting Block (Cat.No. MB1237) Switch on the AC Power and the Green AC Power ON indicator should be lit. The Strobe Light is now operating on mains power When the Strobe Lights and alarms are interconnected, all the interconnected devices must be powered from the same circuit In a multiple station interconnection arrangement, a maximum of 24 units of combined Smoke Alarms, Heat Alarms and Strobe Lights may be configured. The interconnect system should not exceed 12 smoke alarms and / or 18 alarms total [smoke and heat alarms, etc.] With 18 interconnected alarms it is still possible to interconnect up to a total of 6 Strobe Lights. NOTE: INTERCONNECT ONLY 240V SMOKE ALARMS WHICH HAVE BATTERY BACKUP.SMOKE ALARMS WITHOUT BATTERY BACKUP WILL NOT FUNCTION DURING A MAINS POWER FAILURE The recommended maximum wire run distance between the first and last Strobe Light in an interconnect system is 33m Figure 1 illustrates interconnection wiring. Improper connection will result in damage to the Strobe Light or alarms, failure to operate, or shock hazard Make certain that all devices in the interconnect system are wired to a continuous (non-switched) final sub circuit. FIGURE 1 INTERCONNECT WIRING DIAGRAM FOR SL240 WIRE ON STROBE LIGHT HARNESS... CONNECTED TO BLACK... N (Neutral) WHITE... SW (Interconnect Wire) RED... A (Active) 6. TAMPER RESIST LOCKING PIN 3
4 To make your Strobe Light tamper resistant, a locking pin has been provided with your Strobe Light. Using this pin will deter individuals from removing the Strobe Light from the trim ring. To use the pin, insert it into the hole in the side of the Strobe Light after the Strobe Light has been installed on the trim ring (see fig.6.). NOTE that the tamper resist pin will have to be removed in order to remove the Strobe Light. This can be done easily with a long nose pliers. Using the long nose pliers, pull the pin out of the hole. It is now possible to remove the Strobe Light from the trim ring. After installation TEST your Strobe Light by following the test procedure outlined in Section 7. CAUTION! Early warning fire detection and visual notification is best achieved by the installation of smoke alarm and visual notification equipment in all roomed areas of the household as follows: A smoke alarm and visual notification device installed and interconnected in each separate sleeping area and visual notification equipment interconnected with heat or smoke alarm in the living rooms, dining rooms, nearby kitchen areas, hallways, attics, furnace rooms, closets, utility storage rooms, basements, and attached garages. 7. TESTING AND OPERATION WARNING! THIS STROBE LIGHT IS EXTREMELY BRIGHT. DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE LIGHT OR TOUCH THE LENS WHEN THE LIGHT IS FLASHING. 7.1 TESTING: Test by pushing the test button of the smoke alarm and hold it down for a minimum of 5 seconds after the alarm sounds. This will allow the smoke alarm to sound if all electronics, circuitry, and horn are working. This will also send an activation signal through the interconnecting wiring to the Strobe Light causing the Strobe Light to flash if the Strobe Light and interconnection wiring are working properly. If no alarm sounds, check the fuse or circuit breaker supplying power to the alarm circuit. If the alarm sounds but the Strobe Light does not activate refer to section 5 to ensure that the Strobe Light is wired correctly. TEST THE STROBE LIGHT AND YOUR SMOKE ALARMS WEEKLY TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION. 7.2 OPERATION: The Strobe Light is ready for operation once A.C. power is applied; and testing is complete. When the Strobe Light is activated, it will flash for as long as the originating smoke alarm continues to sound. 8. MAINTENANCE 8.1 STROBE LIGHT REMOVAL: IF TAMPER RESIST PIN HAS BEEN USED, REFER TO TAMPER RESIST LOCKING PIN IN SECTION 6 FOR PIN REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS. 8.2 CLEANING YOUR STROBE LIGHT: To clean your Strobe Light remove it from the trim ring and disconnect the A.C. Quick Connect power harness as outlined in section 5. You can clean dust from your Strobe Light by using a vacuum cleaner hose and vacuuming around the cover and lens openings on the Strobe Light. The outside of the Strobe Light can be wiped with a damp cloth. We recommend a periodic monthly inspection and cleaning of the Strobe Light to ensure proper operation. AFTER CLEANING, REINSTALL AND TEST YOUR STROBE LIGHT BY ACTIVATING ONE OF THE SMOKE ALARMS. 4
5 9. LIMITATIONS OF ALARM CONTROLLED VISUAL SIGNALLING DEVICES 9.1 Visual signalling devices can provide early warning to hearing impaired individuals. However, in order for the visual signalling device to function, it must be activated by an operating alarm. 9.2 Alarms cannot provide an activation signal to the visual signalling device if smoke, heat or carbon monoxide do not reach the specific alarm. Therefore, alarms may not sense a condition on a different floor, or on the other side of a closed door. 9.3 Alarms do have limitations. A.C. powered alarms will not operate if A.C. power has been cut off by an electrical fire or an open fuse or circuit breaker unless backed up by a fully charged battery. 9.4 Home emergencies develop in different ways and are often unpredictable. No one type of controlling alarm; heat, smoke or carbon monoxide is always best. 9.5 For maximum protection, smoke alarms must be installed in each sleeping area, and on every level of a home. 9.6 Alarms must be interconnected with each other and the signalling devices and be tested regularly to ensure the alarms and interconnecting circuits are, in good operating condition. 9.7 Hearing impaired individuals may not see the visual warning device if walls, doors, distance, high ambient light, or other obstructions block the Strobe Light from view. 9.8 If the Strobe Light is located outside the bedroom or on a different floor, it will not wake up a sound sleeper. 9.9 The use of alcohol or drugs may also impair one s ability to respond to visual signal Although visual signalling devices can help save lives by providing an early warning of an emergency situation, they are not a substitute for an insurance policy. Home owners and tenants should have adequate insurance to protect their lives and property. 10. GOOD SAFETY HABITS DEVELOP AND PRACTICE A PLAN OF ESCAPE: 10.1 Make a floor plan indicating all doors and windows and at least two (2) escape routes from each room. Second storey buildings may need a fire escape chain ladder Have a family meeting and discuss your escape plan, showing everyone what to do in case of fire Determine a place outside your home where you can all meet if a fire or an alarm occurs Familiarise hearing impaired persons with the visual signal alert and train them to evacuate the home when they see it Practice a fire drill at least every six months. Practice allows you to test your plan before an emergency. You may not be able to reach your children. It is important they know what to do. WHAT TO DO WHEN THE STROBE LIGHT IS ACTIVATED: 10.6 Leave immediately by your escape plan. Every second counts, so don t waste time getting dressed or picking up valuables In leaving, don t open any inside door without first feeling its surface. If hot, or if you see smoke seeping through gaps, don t open that door! Instead use your alternative exit. If the inside of the door is cool, place your shoulder against it, open it slightly and be ready to slam it shut if heat and smoke rush in Stay close to the floor if the air is smoky. Breathe shallowly through a wet cloth if possible Once outside, go to your selected meeting place and make sure everyone is there Call the Fire Brigade from your neighbours home - not from yours! Don t return to your home until the fire officials say that it is safe to do so. There are situations where smoke alarms may not be effective to protect against fire. For instance: Smoking in bed; leaving children home alone; cleaning with flammable liquids such as petrol. For Further information on fire safety contact your local Fire Brigade. 11. WARNING: INSULATION TEST 11.1 UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST AN INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST BE CARRIED OUT ON A CIRCUIT TO WHICH A STROBE LIGHT IS FITTED THE TEST COULD CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE INTERNAL CIRCUITRY OF THE STROBE LIGHT AND MAKE IT INOPERATIVE THE WARRANTY WOULD BE VOID UNDER SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES. 12.
