3 MERak: Safety first MERak is a company specialized in emergency communications with strong presence in the elevator industry. It was founded in 1996 starting with two complementary line products: emergency devices and operating software. Nowadays the company has proven a solvent trajectory designing, producing and commercializing telecommunication devices that fulfill the European standard EN 81-28, which is essential in order to guaranty secure communication in lifts. Since 2005, MERak has its own R&D department responsible for boosting the development of its own projects and upgrading the commercialized range of products and services. And also has developed the concept of online elevator through the incorporation of M2M technology into its devices. MERak - 3

4 MERak R&D MERak s electronic and telecommunications engineering department (R&D) has specialized in developing solutions that fulfills the international legislation and the needs of its clients, in an ongoing process of technological improvement. The mastery of telecommunication and IT, fields evolving continually, has allowed MERak to produce innovative and completely adapted products to the needs of the vertical transport industry. Such as: web platforms for programming and test systems for remote emergency devices. The accumulated experience in this field allows MERak to apply the monitoring systems technology to new activities and devices. MERak - 4

5 MERak devices and EN standard ALARMS GENERATION EN stipulates that elevators must have an alarm system that allows two-way communication between trapped users in the elevator and rescue service. With MERak devices for elevators, users and operators can make emergency calls in case of entrapment to different telephone pre-programmed numbers depending on which button is pushed, the cabin alarm button or the maintenance alarm button (SOS). END OF ALARM EN also requires that when an alarm occurs, the emergency telephone must remain in a special state ("waiting for the end of alarm") until trapped people have been rescued and installation maintainer through an authorized person confirms to the emergency telephone the finalization of the alarm situation. Once the alarm is ended, the telephone must go back to idle state and end the alarm in the reception call center through one of the following methods, 1). Through the maintenance alarm button of connected to the telephone, 2) through a command using the handset or external call, or 3) through an end of alarm button connected to an audio module. CABIN INFORMATION MERak emergency communication devices (compact telephone, audio modules) feature bright yellow and green LEDs to indicate the status of an emergency call through different patterns of selectable blinkings (EN 81-28). ALARM FILTERING The European standard EN states that the emergency telephone should be capable, in the event that the control system detects that the car is not capable of trapping persons (for instance, at ground level with the doors open), the car alarm should be disabled so as to avoid false alarms due to vandalism. For this case, the emergency telephone MMk-656 has an input at the pair of terminals J1 FILTR and J1 FILTR. When this input is shortcircuited, generation of alarms from the car is disabled. BATTERY CONTROL The MMk-656 telephone manages the battery charge and performs measurement of the remaining charge in it. The device can generate automatic calls to the elevator maintenance company in case that the battery charge level is below a programmable tension threshold (as required by EN 81-28) or if no battery is detected. PERIODIC TEST CALL The European standard EN demands that the set should make a status verification call at least every three days. To this end, the MMk-656 has been provided with two memory registers (06 and 07), where the numbers of the servers which log the test calls can be stored. MERak - 5
