1 ADMINISTRATOR S WEEKLY REPORT # December 7 th 13th, 2015 CALLS FOR SERVICE This Week 2015 YTD YTD Change Fire % Aid % Other % Total % Last Week: The annual Washington State Auditor s Office financial and accountability audit continued during the week. Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, December 8 th Headquarters Station 31. at The Civil Service Commission held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 8 th at Auburn City Hall. The Commission welcomed new member, Heidi Harris, Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning at Auburn School District. The Finance Committee and Board of Governance held their monthly meetings on Tuesday, December 8 th at Headquarters Station 31. Administrator Robertson and Director Horaski attended the Auburn Rotary meeting on Wednesday, December 9 th at the Auburn Golf Course. Auburn Rotary was recognized for their participation in Partners for Work a supported employment initiative. Command Staff held their monthly meeting on Thursday, December 10 th Headquarters Station 31. at On Thursday, December 10 th, VRFA staff, retirees & colleagues celebrated the 36 years of service of Assistant Fire Marshal Mike Lee, who will be retiring on December 31 st, at GSA Station 35. Deputy Fire Marshal Karen Stewart will assume that role beginning January 1,
2 This Week: Administrator Robertson and DC s Gerber & Day will attend the monthly membership meeting of the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, December 15 th at Emerald Downs. Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, December 15 th Headquarters Station 31. at The VRFA will host Auburn s Sister City delegation from Guanghan, China on Tuesday, December 15 th at Lea Hill Station 34. We will provide a tour and discuss our department and its capabilities. Administrator Robertson will host the police chief s from Algona, Auburn & Pacific for a discussion on public safety issues in our communities on Wednesday, December 16 th in Auburn. DC Day will attend the King County EMS Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 16 th in Seattle. On Thursday, December 17 th, Administrator Robertson will meet with Representative Drew Stokesbary to discuss issues important to the VRFA for the upcoming legislative session. Administrator Robertson will attend the Washington Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee meeting on Thursday, December 17 th in Olympia. VRFA staff will attend the service for retired Auburn Fire Department Captain Ed Sluys, who passed away on December 7 th at the age of 82, at Tahoma National Cemetery on Thursday, December 17 th. On Thursday, December 17 th, Administrator Robertson will attend the Mayor s Task Force on Homelessness at the Auburn Senior Activity Center. Administrator Robertson will attend the Municipal Roundtable, hosted by attorney Joe Quinn, on Friday, December 18 th at West Pierce Fire in Lakewood. Interviews for the Deputy Fire Marshal position, which will be open January 1 st, will be held on Friday, December 18 th. DC Swearingen will complete his studies this week and earn his Master s Degree from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA on Friday, December 18 th. IT Manager Smith will attend the South King County Information Technology meeting, hosted by Valley Communications Center, on Friday, December 18 th. 2
3 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Monday, December 7 th at 4:43 p.m., firefighters assisted an adult male complaining of lock jaw from new medication. Patient was treated and transported to St. Francis hospital by private ambulance. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Tuesday, December 8 th at 8:20 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult female with seizures. The patient was evaluated at the scene then transported by a private ambulance to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) for further evaluation. Rollover Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Wednesday, December 9 th at 9:31 p.m., firefighters responded to a two car accident in the intersection of 8 th and Auburn Way North. Firefighters found a two car vehicle accident with one car on its side and three patients trapped within. Firefighters used hydraulic cutters to extrication the patients. A total of four patients consisting of 2 adult males, 1 elderly female, and 1 young adult male were treated and transported to local area hospitals. All sustained non-life threatening injuries. Aid Call: (South Auburn) On Thursday, December 10 th at 11:10 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a middle aged male experiencing leg pain. The patient was evaluated and transported to MAMC by private ambulance. Illegal Burning: (Lea Hill) On Friday, December 11 th at 5:55 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire behind a residence. Firefighters arrived to find the home owner burning yard debris in a fire pit. The fire was extinguished and firefighters educated the owner on burning restrictions within the city. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Saturday, December 12 th at 8:39 a.m., firefighters responded to an adult male who was found unresponsive. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and King County Medics and then transported to MAMC via Medics. Service Call: (Auburn) On Sunday, December 13 th at 9:55 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a power pole transformer explosion. Crews found the power out in the neighborhood and contacted Puget Sound Energy. No hazard found at the power pole. Training Division Activities: Year Weekly Year to Date 15,193 16,910 3
4 Blue Card Command Training Continuing Education continued: Once certified as a Blue Card Incident Commander (IC) you are required to complete continuing education to maintain certification. As previously reported all VRFA hard-bar officers are certified through this program. In addition, acting officers are currently enrolled in the initial certification process. The SKCFTC manages the initial training, continuing education and the recertification process for all member departments. This quarter all certified IC s are required to be in the simulation lab with a certified instructor. The Consortium manages five command training centers or CTC s. CBT Instructor Workshop: VRFA CBT instructors attended the annual competency based training (CBT) workshop. This workshop trains instructors to deliver the annual curriculum so EMT s can be evaluated on the necessary skills to deliver medical care in the field. CBT instructors will train and evaluate all EMT s within the training consortium at the annual CBT rodeo in February and March. This training and evaluation process is required by the State of Washington to maintain an EMT license. Fire Marshal s Office: Business Fire & Life Safety Inspections Certified Fire Inspectors completed 8 business safety inspections this week. The alarms are provided through a grant from the Auburn Area Fire Medic Campaign. A post was made to the website regarding registering for storm damage reimbursement. Two carbon monoxide alarms were provided for older adults living in the Leisure Manor Mobile home park in South Auburn. The alarms are provided through a grant from the Auburn Area Fire Medic Campaign. Filming continued for the VRFA Informational Video. Nine staff members were interviewed for the video. PIO duties were performed for a hoverboard fire at the Auburn Outlet Collection. Posts were made to Facebook and Twitter regarding our weekly call volume and a missing Seattle Firefighter. Fire Investigation There was 1 new incident requiring the services of the Fire Investigation Unit this week. On December 8th th an accidental fire occurred at the Outlet Collection Mall. This was a widely publicized product failure involving a Hoverboard scooter and a charging battery. Consumer Product Safety Commission follow-up continues with VRFA investigators. VRFA investigators continue to work with ATF and Auburn Police on the serial fires. 5
6 Planning and Logistics P&L received fifteen apparatus and seven facility/small tool maintenance requests. DC Gerber & BC Larberg attended the Auburn School District Safety Committee meeting. He also attended a lockdown drill at Auburn Mountainview High School. BC Larberg and Captain Thompson attended a specification meeting for the new fire pumper. Specifications are being finalized for production for a new fire pumper. Delivery of the new fire pumper is expected in 3 rd quarter of A roof leak was repaired at Station 38. 6
