2 CIB 3073 Extra Alert Bell (61212) The Extra Alert Bell (Figure 1) provides audible alerts making you aware of voice terminal ringing in most noisy and spacious working environments. The bell may be connected to your communications system s Extra- Alert/2-Line Power Failure Cartridge Type III for Models 206, 410 and 820, Services Module for Models 1030 and 3070, or Supplemental Alert Adapter (SAA). 5 NOTE: If you have any difficulties, make sure the modular line cord s connections are secure. If they are secure, replace the modular line cord and place another call into your communications system. Contact your equipment supplier if the bell still does not operate. Installing the Extra Alert Bell The bell may be installed indoors or outdoors (using a modular line cord or outdoor wire and conduit). Separate instructions follow for each installation. WARNING: National and local building codes and fire regulations forbid routing flammable wiring inside or on top of air plenums or ducts or along hot pipes. Consult your local ordinances and regulations for routing flammable wiring through walls or floors. The manufacturers, distributors, and their agents will not be responsible for damage due to improperly installed wiring. CHOOSING A LOCATION 1 Choose a location for the bell that is not more than 1,000 feet from your control unit or SAA. If you are using the cord supplied with the bell, make sure the bell is not more than 25 feet from your control unit or SAA. 2 If you are using outdoor wire and conduit to mount the bell outdoors, choose a location for an electrical box that is within 25 feet of your control unit or SAA, unless you have longer modular cords. WALL-MOUNTING THE BELL If you are mounting the Extra Alert Bell outdoors where it will not be directly exposed to rain or snow, follow the instructions below. Otherwise, refer to the section of this document titled Outdoor Mounting Using Wire and Conduit before wall-mounting the bell. 1 2 Select a mounting location that is at least as large as the Extra Alert Bell. Holding the template (provided at the end of these instructions) level, place it against the mounting location on the wall (Figure 3). iss 1, cib3073-4

For plywood walls or walls with a sturdy supporting structure (wood studs or crossmembers), insert and partially thread a screw (provided) into each of the bell s screw holes (Figure 3) at the previously marked mounting screw locations. For paneled, plaster, and plasterboard (hollow) walls, install 1/4 dry-wall fasteners (e.g., toggle or molly bolts)(not provided) according to the manufacturer s instructions at each of the previously marked mounting screw locations (Figure 3). Insert and partially thread a screw into each of the bell s screw holes. 5 Tighten both screws. iss 1, cib3073-5

7 WIRING THE EXTRA ALERT BELL Indoor Mounting 1 If you have not removed the black plastic modular jack cover and cushion from the bottom of the bell, remove them now (Figure 2). 2 Plug one end of the modular line cord (provided) into the jack on the bottom of the bell. Outdoor Mounting Using a Modular Line Cord CAUTION: If the bell will be directly exposed to rain or snow, use outdoor wire and conduit not a modular line cord. Refer to the next section of this document for further instructions. 1 If you have not removed the black plastic modular jack cover and cushion from the bottom of the bell (Figure 4), remove and set them aside. 4 Place the cushion around the modular cord and slide the cushion into the jack cover. 5 Insert the jack cover (with the cushion inside it) into the hole in the bottom of the bell.

Outdoor Mounting Using Wire and Conduit NOTE: The outdoor wire and conduit should be installed by a qualified electrician. 1 If you removed the black plastic modular jack cover and cushion from the bottom of the bell (Figure 4), replace them now. 2 Remove the screw at the top of the bell s housing to expose a 1/2 threaded conduit entrance (Figure 5). 1/2 Threaded conduit entrance Top screw gauge wire Electrical (Up to 1,000 feet) box Conduit Screw terminals Front screws Extra alert FIGURE 5 Outdoor Mounting Using Wire and Conduit iss 1, cib3073-7

9 Install conduit making sure it is installed at the top of the bell (Figure 5) and that the small drain holes are on the bottom of the bell. Remove and set aside the four screws from the front of the bell (Figure 5). Locate the black gasket around the center of the bell. Pull the front section of the bell away from the gasket to expose the inside of the bell. Using up to 1,000 feet of between 16 and 24 gauge wire, connect one end of the wire to the two screw terminals inside the bell (Figure 5). Install a Connecting Block (625B) (not provided) or equivalent in a standard electrical box. Connect the other end of the wire to the black and yellow terminals in the Connecting Block (or equivalent). NOTE: After the outdoor wire is installed, areas around each end of the conduit should be plugged with caulking compound. Plug one end of a modular line cord into the modular jack in the Connecting Block. CONNECTING THE EXTRA ALERT BELL TO YOUR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM 1 Complete the wiring run from the bell to your control unit or SAA (Figure 6), using one of the following: modular line and extension cords. modular line cords, jacks, and voice terminal cabling. iss 1, cib3073-8
