Educational Group E occupancy includes, among others, the use of a building or structure, t or a portion thereof, by six or more persons at any one time for educational purposes through the 12th grade. IFC 202 Occupancy Group E Accessory to places of worship. Religious educational rooms and religious auditoriums, which are accessory to places of religious i worship in accordance with Section of the International Building Code and have occupant loads of less than 100, shall be classified as Group A 3 occupancies. This group includes buildings and structures or portions thereof occupied by more than five children older than 2 1 / 2 years of age who receive educational, supervision or personal care services for less than 24 hours per day. IFC 202 Occupancy Group E Group E, day care facilities. Within a place of religious worship. Rooms and spaces within places of religious worship providing such care during religious i functions shall be classified as part of the primary occupancy. PERSONAL CARE SERVICE. The care of persons who do not require medical care. Personal care involves responsibility for the safety of the persons while inside the building. 3

4 IFC 202 Occupancy Group E IFC 202 Occupancy Group E Group E, day care facilities. Five or fewer occupants receiving care. A facility having five or fewer persons receiving custodial care shall be classified as part of the primary occupancy. CUSTODIAL CARE. Assistance with day to day living tasks, such as assistance with cooking, taking medication, bathing, using toilet facilities and other tasks of daily living. Custodial care includes persons receiving care who evacuate at a slower rate and/or who have mental and psychiatric complications. Group E, day care facilities. Five or fewer occupants receiving care in a dwelling unit. A facility such as the above within a dwelling unit and having five or fewer persons receiving custodial care shall be classified as a Group R 3 occupancy or shall comply with the International Residential Code. IFC 202 Occupancy Group E Institutional Group I 4, day care facilities. This group shall include buildings and structures occupied by more than five persons of any age who receive custodial care for less than 24 hours by persons other than parents or guardians, relatives by blood, marriage, or adoption, and in a place other than the home of the person cared for. This group shall include, but not be limited to, the following: Adult day care Child day care Classification as Group E. A child day care facility that provides care for more than five but no more than 100 children 2 1 / 2 years or less of age, where the rooms in which the children are cared for are located on a level of exit discharge serving such rooms and each of these child care rooms has an exit door directly to the exterior, shall be classified as Group E. EDUCATIONAL OCCUPANCIES FIRE APPARATUS ACCESS ROADS IFC CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATIONAL OCCUPANCIES 4

5 503.1 Where required. Fire apparatus access roads shall be provided and maintained in accordance with the following: Buildings ud gsand facilities. Approved fire apparatus access roads shall be provided for every facility, building or portion of a building hereafter constructed or moved into or within the jurisdiction. The fire apparatus access road shall comply with the requirements of this section and shall extend to within 150 feet ( mm) of all portions of the facility and all portions of the exterior walls of the first story of the building as measured by an approved route around the exterior of the building or facility Where required. Fire apparatus access roads shall be provided and maintained in accordance with the following: Exception:The fire code official is authorized to increase the dimension of 150 feet ( mm) where: 1. The building is equipped throughout with an approved automatic sprinkler 2.Fire apparatus access roads cannot be installed because of location on property, topography, waterways, nonnegotiable grades or other similar conditions, and an approved alternative means of fire protection is provided Where required. Fire apparatus access roads shall be provided and maintained in accordance with the following: Additional access. The fire code official is authorized to require more than one fire apparatus access road based on the potential for impairment of a single road by vehicle congestion, condition of terrain, climatic conditions or other factors that could limit access Specifications. Fire apparatus access roads shall be installed and arranged in accordance with the following: Dimensions. Fire apparatus access roads shall have an unobstructed width of not less than 20 feet (6096 mm), exclusive of shoulders, except for approved security gates in accordance with Section 503.6, and an unobstructed vertical clearance of not less than 13 feet 6 inches (4115 mm) Specifications. Fire apparatus access roads shall be installed and arranged in accordance with the following: Authority. The fire code official shall have the authority to require an increase in the minimum access widths where they are inadequate for fire or rescue operations Surface. Fire apparatus access roads shall be designed and maintained to support the imposed loads of fire apparatus and shall be surfaced so as to provide allweather driving capabilities. 5

6 503.2 Specifications. Fire apparatus access roads shall be installed and arranged in accordance with the following: Specifications. The required turning radius of a fire apparatus access road shall be determined by the fire code official Dead ends. Dead end fire apparatus access roads in excess of 150 feet ( mm) in length shall be provided with an approved area for turning around fire apparatus Bridges and elevated surfaces Grade Angles of approach and departure Stairway access to roof. New buildings four or more stories above grade plane, except those with a roof slope greater than four units vertical in 12 units horizontal (33.3 percent slope), shall be provided with a stairway to the roof. Stairway access to the roof shall be in accordance with Section Such stairway shall be marked at street and floor levels with a sign indicating that the stairway continues to the roof. Where roofs are used for roof gardens or for other purposes, stairways shall be provided as required for such occupancy classification. KEY BOXES Where required. Where access to or within a structure or an area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for life saving or firefighting purposes, the fire code official is authorized to require a key box to be installed in an approved location. The key box shall be of an approved type listed in accordance with UL 1037, and shall contain keys to gain necessary access as required by the fire code official. KEY BOXES Required water supply. An approved water supply capable of supplying the required fire flow for fire protection shall be provided to premises upon which facilities, buildings or portions of buildings are hereafter constructed or moved into or within the jurisdiction. 6

7 507.2 Type of water supply. A water supply shall consist of reservoirs, pressure tanks, elevated tanks, water mains or other fixed systems capable of providing the required fire flow Private fire service mains. Private fire service mains and appurtenances shall be installed in accordance with NFPA Water tanks. Water tanks for private fire protection shall be installed in accordance with NFPA Fire flow. Fire flow requirements for buildings or portions of buildings and facilities shall be determined by an approved method Water supply test. The fire code official shall be notified prior to the water supply test. Water supply tests shall be witnessed by the fire code official or approved documentation of the test shall be provided to the fire code official prior to final approval of the water supply system Where required. Where a portion of the facility or building hereafter constructed or moved into or within the jurisdiction is more than 400 feet (122 m) 500 feet (per State modification) from a hydrant on a fire apparatus access road, as measured by an approved route around the exterior of the facility or building, on site fire hydrants and mains shall be provided where required by the fire code official. Exceptions: 2. For buildings equipped throughout with an approved automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section or , the distance requirement shall be 600 feet Emergency responder radio coverage in new buildings. All new buildings shall have approved radio coverage for emergency responders within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety communication systems of the jurisdiction at the exterior of the building. This section shall not require improvement of the existing public safety communication systems Emergency responder radio coverage in new buildings. All new buildings shall have approved radio coverage for emergency responders within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety communication systems of the jurisdiction at the exterior of the building. 8 Emergency and Standby Power Emergency responder radio coverage in existing buildings. Existing buildings that do not have approved radio coverage for emergency responders within the building based upon the existing coverage levels of the public safety communication systems of the jurisdiction at the exterior of the building, shall be equipped with such coverage according to one of the following: Installation. Emergency and standby power systems required by this code or the International Building Code shall be installed in accordance with this code, NFPA 110 and NFPA 111. Existing installations shall be maintained in accordance with the original approval Stationary generators. Stationary emergency and standby power generators required by this code shall be listed in accordance with UL Emergency and Standby Power Emergency and Standby Power Where required. Emergency and standby power systems shall be provided where required by Sections through Emergency Power Emergency Voice/Alarm in Group A Exit Signs Means of Egress Illumination Where required. Emergency and standby power systems shall be provided where required by Sections through Standby Power Smoke Control Accessible Means of Egress Elevators Accessible Means of Egress Platform Lifts Horizontal Sliding Doors Automatic Sprinkler Automatic Sprinkler Group E. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided for Group E occupancies as follows: 1. Throughout all Group E fire areas greater than 12,000 (1115 m 2 ) in area. 2. Throughout every portion of educational buildings below the lowest level of exit discharge serving that portion of the building Group E. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided for Group E occupancies as follows: Exception: An automatic sprinkler system is not required in any area below the lowest level of exit discharge serving that area where every classroom throughout the building has at least one exterior exit door at ground level. 8

9 Alternative Fire Extinguishing Alternative Fire Extinguishing Commercial hood and duct systems. Each required commercial kitchen exhaust hood and duct system required by Section 609 to have a Type I hood shall be protected with an approved automatic fire extinguishing system installed in accordance with this code Where required. A Type I hood shall be installed at or above all commercial cooking appliances and domestic cooking appliances used for commercial purposes that produce grease vapors. Standpipe General. Standpipe systems shall be provided in new buildings and structures in accordance with this section. Fire hose threads used in connection with standpipe systems shall be approved and shall be compatible with fire department hose threads. The location of fire department hose connections shall be approved. Standpipe Height. Class III standpipe systems shall be installed throughout buildings where the floor level of the highest story is located more than 30 feet (9144 mm) above the lowest level of the fire department vehicle access, or where the floor level of the lowest story is located more than 30 feet (9144 mm) below the highest level of fire department vehicle access Installation standard. Standpipe systems shall be installed in accordance with this section and NFPA 14. Standpipe Existing multiple story buildings. Existing buildings with occupied floors located more than 50 feet ( mm) above the lowest level of fire department access or more than 50 feet ( mm) below the highest h level l of fire department access shall be equipped with standpipes. Standpipe Exceptions: 1. Class I standpipes are allowed in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section or

10 Standpipe Exceptions: 5. In determining the lowest level of fire department vehicle access, it shall not be required to consider: 5.1. Recessed loading docks for four vehicles or less, and 5.2. Conditions where topography makes access from the fire department vehicle to the building impractical or impossible. Standpipe Group A. Class I automatic wet standpipes shall be provided in nonsprinklered Group A buildings having an occupant load exceeding 1,000 persons. Exceptions: 1. Open air seating spaces without enclosed spaces. 2. Class I automatic dry and semiautomatic dry standpipes or manual wet standpipes are allowed in buildings that are not high rise buildings. Standpipe Portable Fire Extinguishers Stages. Stages greater than 1,000 (93 m 2 ) in area shall be equipped with a Class III wet standpipe system with 1 1 / 2 inch and 2 1 / 2 inch (38 mm and 64 mm) hose connections on each side of the stage. Exception: Where the building or area is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system, a 1 1 / 2 inch (38 mm) hose connection shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 13 or in accordance with NFPA 14 for Class II or III standpipes Portable Fire Extinguishers Where required. Portable fire extinguishers shall be installed in the following locations. 1. In new and existing Group A, B, E, F, H, I, M, R 1, R 2, R 4 and S occupancies. 2. Within 30 feet (9144 mm) of commercial cooking equipment. 3. In areas where flammable or combustible liquids are stored, used or dispensed. 4. On each floor of structures under construction, except Group R 3 occupancies, in accordance with Section Where required by the sections indicated in Table Special hazard areas, including but not limited to laboratories, computer rooms and generator rooms, where required by the fire code official. Portable Fire Extinguishers Class A fire hazards. Portable fire extinguishers for occupancies that involve primarily Class A fire hazards, the minimum sizes and distribution shall comply with Table 906.3(1). An approved fire alarm system installed in accordance with the provisions of this code and NFPA 72 shall be provided in new buildings and structures in accordance with Sections through and provide occupant notification in accordance with Section 907.5, unless other requirements are provided by another section of this code Where required new buildings and structures. A minimum of one manual fire alarm box shall be provided in an approved location to initiate a fire alarm signal for fire alarm systems employing automatic fire detectors or water flow detection devices. Where other sections of this code allow elimination of fire alarm boxes due to sprinklers, a single fire alarm box shall be installed Group E. A manual fire alarm system that initiates the occupant notification signal utilizing an emergency voice/alarm communication system meeting the requirements of Section and installed in accordance with Section shall be installed in Group E occupancies. When automatic sprinkler systems or smoke detectors are installed, such systems or detectors shall be connected to the building fire alarm system. 11

12 Group E. Exceptions: 1. A manual fire alarm system is not required in Group E occupancies with an occupant load of 30 or less. 2. Manual fire alarm boxes are not required in Group E occupancies where all of the following apply: 2.1. Interior corridors are protected by smoke detectors Auditoriums, cafeterias, gymnasiums and similar areas are protected by heat detectors or other approved detection devices Shops and laboratories involving dusts or vapors are protected by heat detectors or other approved detection devices. 3. Manual fire alarm boxes shall not be required in Group E occupancies where the building is equipped throughout Group E. Exceptions: 3. Manual fire alarm boxes shall not be required in Group E occupancies where the building is equipped throughout with an approved automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section , the emergency voice/alarm communication system will activate on sprinkler water flow and manual activation is provided from a normally occupied location Emergency voice/alarm communication systems. Emergency voice/alarm communication systems required by this code shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 72. The operation of any automatic fire detector, sprinkler waterflow device or manual fire alarm box shall automatically sound an alert tone followed by voice instructions giving approved information and directions for a general or staged evacuation in accordance with the building s fire safety and evacuation plans required by Section Emergency voice/alarm communication systems Manual override. A manual override for emergency voice communication shall be provided on a selective and all call basis for all paging zones Live voice messages. The emergency voice/alarm communication system shall also have the capability to broadcast live voice messages by paging zones on a selective and all call basis Emergency voice/alarm communication systems Alternate uses. The emergency voice/ alarm communication system shall be allowed to be used for other announcements, provided the manual fire alarm use takes precedence over any other use Emergency voice/alarm communication systems Emergency voice/alarm communication Emergency voice/alarm communication captions. Where stadiums, arenas and grandstands are required to caption audible public announcements in accordance with Section of the International Building Code, the emergency/voice alarm communication system shall also be captioned. Prerecorded or live emergency captions shall be from an approved location constantly attended by personnel trained to respond to an emergency. 12

13 Emergency voice/alarm communication systems Emergency power. Emergency voice/ alarm communications systems shall be provided with an approved emergency power source Installation. A fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with Sections through and NFPA Wiring. Wiring shall comply with the requirements of NFPA 70 and NFPA 72. Wireless protection systems utilizing radiofrequency transmitting devices shall comply with the special requirements for supervision of low power wireless systems in NFPA Installation. A fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with Sections through and NFPA Power supply. The primary and secondary power supply for the fire alarm system shall be provided in accordance with NFPA Installation. A fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with Sections through and NFPA Zones. Each floor shall be zoned separately and a zone shall not exceed 22,500 (2090 m 2 ). The length of any zone shall not exceed 300 feet ( mm) in any direction Installation. A fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with Sections through and NFPA Zoning indicator panel. A zoning indicator panel and the associated controls shall be provided in an approved location. The visual zone indication shall lock in until the system is reset and shall not be canceled by the operation of an audible alarmsilencing switch Installation. A fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with Sections through and NFPA Monitoring. Fire alarm systems required by this chapter or by the International Building Code shall be monitored by an approved supervising station in accordance with NFPA

14 Fire alarm systems. An approved fire alarm system shall be installed in existing buildings and structures in accordance with Sections through and provide occupant notification in accordance with Section unless other requirements are provided by other sections of this code. Exception: Occupancies with an existing, previously approved fire alarm system Fire alarm systems Group E.. A fire alarm system shall be installed in existing Group E occupancies in accordance with Section Exceptions: 1. A manual fire alarm system is not required in a building with a maximum area of 1,000 (93 m 2 ) that contains a single classroom and is located no closer than 50 feet ( mm) from another building Fire alarm systems Group E.. A fire alarm system shall be installed in existing Group E occupancies in accordance with Section Exceptions: 2. A manual fire alarm system is not required in Group E occupancies with an occupant load less than 50. Where required by the fire code official, approved signs or other approved notices or markings that include the words NO PARKING FIRE LANE shall be provided for fire apparatus access roads to identify such roads or prohibit the obstruction thereof. The means by which fire lanes are designated shall be maintained in a clean and legible condition at all times and be replaced or repaired when necessary to provide adequate visibility. Site Inspection Site Inspection Fire Apparatus Access Roads Marking. 503 Fire Apparatus Access Roads Obstruction of fire apparatus access roads. Fire apparatus access roads shall not be obstructed in any manner, including the parking of vehicles. The minimum widths and clearances established in Section shall be maintained at all times. Site Inspection 507 Fire Hydrant Obstruction. Unobstructed access to fire hydrants shall be maintained at all times. The fire department shall not be deterred or hindered from gaining immediate access to fire protection equipment or fire hydrants Clear space around hydrants. A 3 foot (914 mm) clear space shall be maintained around the circumference of fire hydrants, except as otherwise required or approved. Site Inspection 912 Fire Department Connections Access. Immediate access to fire department connections shall be maintained at all times and without obstruction by fences, bushes, trees, walls or any other fixed or moveable object. Access to fire department connections shall be approved by the fire chief. 15

EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILLS General. Emergency evacuation drills complying with the provisions of this section shall be conducted at least annually in the occupancies listed in Section or when required by the fire code official. Drills shall be designed in cooperation with the local authorities Frequency. Required emergency evacuation drills shall be held at the intervals specified in Table or more frequently where necessary to familiarize all occupants with the drill procedure. EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILLS Table EDUCATIONAL OCCUPANCIES Monthly Drills To include all building occupants First emergency evacuation drill. The first emergency evacuation drill of each school year shall be conducted within 10 days of the beginning of classes. EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILLS SC Code of Laws SECTION Monthly fire drills required; penalty. All teachers or superintendents in charge of the schools of the State which are supported in whole or in part by taxation shall conduct fire drills at least once each month. Any teacher or superintendent failing to observe the provisions of this section shall be fined not less than ten dollars nor more than twenty five dollars for each offense. Such fine shall be deducted from his salary and turned over to the county treasurer for ordinary county purposes. HAZARD COMMUNICATION Material Safety Data Sheets. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all hazardous materials shall be either readily available on the premises as a paper copy, or where approved, shall hll be permitted to be readily retrievable by electronic access. Required for materials that pose health or physical hazards, are not consumer products in consumer product packaging, not being used as intended by the consumer. 17

18 HAZARD COMMUNICATION EMERGENCY AND STANDBY POWER SYSTEMS Operational inspection and testing. Emergency power systems, including all appurtenant components shall be inspected and tested under load in accordance with NFPA 110 and NFPA 111. EMERGENCY AND STANDBY POWER SYSTEMS Emergency lighting equipment. Emergency lighting shall be inspected and tested in accordance with Sections through Activation test. An activation test of the emergency lighting equipment shall be completed monthly. The activation test shall ensure the emergency lighting activates automatically upon normal electrical disconnect and stays sufficiently illuminated for a minimum of 30 seconds. EMERGENCY AND STANDBY POWER SYSTEMS Emergency lighting equipment. Emergency lighting shall be inspected and tested in accordance with Sections through Power test. For battery powered emergency lighting, a power test of the emergency lighting equipment shall be completed annually. The power test shall operate the emergency lighting for a minimum of 90 minutes and shall remain sufficiently illuminated for the duration of the test. COMMERCIAL KITCHEN HOODS Inspection is required at least every 6 months Records. Records for inspections shall state the individual and company performing the inspection, a description of the inspection and when the inspection took place. Records for cleanings shall state the individual and company performing the cleaning and when the cleaning took place. Such records shall be completed after each inspection or cleaning, maintained on the premises for a minimum of three years and be copied to the fire code official upon request. 18

19 COMMERCIAL KITCHEN HOODS COMMERCIAL KITCHEN HOODS Extinguishing system service. Automatic fire extinguishing systems shall be serviced at least every six months and after activation of the system. Inspection shall be by qualified individuals, and a certificate of inspection shall be forwarded to the fire code official upon completion. COMMERCIAL KITCHEN HOODS FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION Maintenance. The required fire resistance rating of fire resistancerated construction (including walls, firestops, shaft enclosures, partitions, smoke barriers, floors, fireresistive coatings and sprayed fire resistant materials applied to structural members and fire resistant joint systems) shall be maintained. Such elements shall be visually inspected by the owner annually and properly repaired, restored or replaced when damaged, altered, breached or penetrated. FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION Maintenance. Where concealed, such elements shall not be required to be visually inspected by the owner unless the concealed space is accessible by the removal or movement of a panel, access door, ceiling tile or similar movable entry to the space. Openings made therein for the passage of pipes, electrical conduit, wires, ducts, air transfer openings and holes made for any reason shall be protected with approved methods capable of resisting the passage of smoke and fire. Openings through fireresistance rated assemblies shall be protected by self or automatic closing doors of approved construction meeting the fire protection requirements for the assembly. FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION IBC Marking and identification. Fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers and smoke partitions or any other wall required to have protected openings or penetrations shall be effectively and permanently identified with signs or stenciling. Such identification shall: 1. Be located in accessible concealed floor, floor ceiling or attic spaces; 2. Be located within 15 feet (4572 mm) of the end of each wall and at intervals not exceeding 30 feet (9144 mm) measured horizontally along the wall or partition; 19

20 FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION IBC Marking and identification. Fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers and smoke partitions or any other wall required to have protected openings or penetrations shall be effectively and permanently identified with signs or stenciling. Such identification shall: 3. Include lettering not less than 3 inches (76 mm) in height with a minimum 3 / 8 inch (9.5 mm) stroke in a contrasting color incorporating the suggested wording. 22 FIRE ALARM AND DETECTION SYSTEMS Maintenance required. Whenever required for compliance with the provisions ii of this code, devices, equipment, systems, conditions, arrangements, levels of protection or other features shall thereafter be continuously maintained in accordance with applicable NFPA requirements or as directed by the fire code official. EMERGENCY AND STANDBY POWER SYSTEMS Maintenance. Emergency and standby power systems shall hll be maintained in accordance with NFPA 110 and NFPA 111 such that the system is capable of supplying service within the time specified for the type and duration required. MEANS OF EGRESS Reliability. Required exit accesses, exits and exit discharges shall be continuously maintained free from obstructions or impediments to full instant use in the case of fire or other emergency when the building area served by the means of egress is occupied. An exit or exit passageway shall not be used for any purpose that interferes with a means of egress. MEANS OF EGRESS Finishes, furnishings and decorations. Means of egress doors shall be maintained in such a manner as to be distinguishable from the adjacent construction o and finishes essuch that atthe edoors sare easily recognizable as doors. Furnishings, decorations or other objects shall not be placed so as to obstruct exits, access thereto, egress therefrom, or visibility thereof. Hangings and draperies shall not be placed over exit doors or otherwise be located to conceal or obstruct an exit. Mirrors shall not be placed on exit doors. Mirrors shall not be placed in or adjacent to any exit in such a manner as to confuse the direction of exit. 22

23 MEANS OF EGRESS Door operations. Except as specifically permitted by this section egress doors shall hll be readily openable from the egress side without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort.. 23

In occupancies in Groups A, E, I and R 1, and dormitories i in Group R 2, curtains, ti draperies, hangings and other decorative materials suspended from walls or ceilings shall meet the flame propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701 in accordance with Section or be noncombustible. 24

25 DECORATIVE MATERIALS Combustible decorative materials. The permissible amount of decorative materials meeting the flame propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701 shall not exceed 10 percent of the specific wall or ceiling area to which it is attached. DECORATIVE MATERIALS DECORATIVE MATERIALS General. All of the following requirements shall apply to all Group A and E occupancies and Group I 4 day care facilities regulated by Sections through : 1. Explosive or highly flammable materials. Furnishings or decorative materials of an explosive or highly flammable character shall not be used. 2. Fire retardant coatings. Fire retardant coatings in existing buildings shall be maintained so as to retain the effectiveness of the treatment under service conditions encountered in actual use. 3. Obstructions. Furnishings or other objects shall not be placed to obstruct exits, access thereto, egress therefrom or visibility thereof. DECORATIVE MATERIALS Group E. The requirements in Sections and shall apply to occupancies in Group E Storage in corridors and lobbies. Clothing and personal effects shall not be stored in corridors and lobbies. Exceptions: 1. Corridors protected by an approved automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section Corridors protected by an approved smoke detection system installed in accordance with Section Storage in metal lockers, provided the minimum required egress width is maintained. DECORATIVE MATERIALS Artwork. Artwork and teaching materials shall be limited on the walls of corridors to not more than 20 percent of the wall area. 25

26 Can combustible decor effectively be made non combustible? ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, WIRING, AND HAZARDS Multiplug adapters. Multiplug adapters, such as cube adapters, unfused plug strips or any other device not complying with NFPA 70 shall be prohibited. 26

27 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, WIRING, AND HAZARDS Extension cords. Extension cords and flexible cords shall not be a substitute for permanent wiring. Extension cords and flexible cords shall not be affixed to structures, extended through walls, ceilings or floors, or under doors or floor coverings, nor shall such cords be subject to environmental damage or physical impact. Extension cords shall be used only with portable appliances. FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION Opening protectives. Opening protectives shall be maintained in an operative condition in accordance with NFPA 80. Where eeao allowed edby the efire ecode official,, the application of field applied labels associated with the maintenance of opening protectives shall follow the requirements of the approved third party certification organization accredited for listing the opening protective. Fire doors and smoke barrier doors shall not be blocked or obstructed, or otherwise made inoperable. Fusible links shall be replaced promptly whenever fused or damaged. Fire door assemblies shall not be modified. FIRE RESISTANCE RATED CONSTRUCTION Hold open devices and closers. Hold open devices and automatic door closers, where provided, shall be maintained. During the period that such device is out of service for repairs, the door it operates shall remain in the closed position Door operation. Swinging fire doors shall close from the full open position and latch automatically. The door closer shall exert enough force to close and latch the door from any partially open position. 27

28 COMBUSTIBLE WASTE MATERIAL Waste accumulation prohibited. Combustible waste material creating a fire hazard shall not be allowed to accumulate in buildings or structures or upon premises. Close Out and Follow Up Public School Inspections Conduct a Close Out meeting with the responsible party. Advise them of the deficiencies noted during the inspection, the time frame for correction, results of non compliance and appeals process. Conduct follow up meetings and inspections as necessary. State Fire Marshal has assumed responsibility for inspecting public schools. Local authorities are welcomed and encouraged to be involved. Accompany the Deputy State Fire Marshal during the inspection. Assume responsibility for the inspection. 28
