At our recent Process Measurement Education Seminar on April 14 th the instructor Mark Murphy told a story to kick things off that really promoted the value of ISA Membership. The story was about how his son in law was able to start a great new career because he attended an ISA meeting. It turns out that when Mark attended the ISA OC Meeting back on November 8 th, Gary Zaremba Regional Manager from Emerson made an announcement on an opportunity that they were having trouble filling. Mark knew his son in law was looking for a new career and with help from an ISA OC Board member Mark was able to put his son in law in touch with the right people at Emerson. To make a long story a little longer Mark s son in law was at the Process Measurement Education Seminar on April 14 th learning from his Father in law and is now a very happy employee of Emerson Process Management. At all of our monthly programs, we give employers and job seekers a chance to sell themselves and network. For information on upcoming opportunities to network, learn, and have some fun. Check out I look forward to seeing you at upcoming events. Very Respectfully, Fred McEachen ISA OC Section President The monthly ISA Section Newsletters and annual Regional Membership Directory and Buyers Guide are mailed to all ISA section members in Southern California and Southern Nevada and to ISA student affiliates at Cal Poly Pomona, Long Beach State University and Bakersfield College. 3 Message from District 11 Vice President My priorities and my job by Gary Campbell, ISA District Vice President I owe many thanks to Brad Rupert, our past DVP, for serving almost two full terms. When the previous DVP stepped out, Brad stepped right in and helped develop a guide for new DVP s, now referred to as DVP Best Practices. It is incredible help and reference for incoming DVPs. My priorities : First - family/health, second - work/education, third - My Job for ISA; and fourth - other volunteer work. Other societies I support include AZMIA, ISPE, ACESA, AZBIO, and Science Olympiad. ISA is my passion, and I will do my best to serve section leaders of District 11, consisting of Central AZ, Central CA, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Northern CA, Orange County, San Diego, and coming soon - the Aloha section. Join my applause for Keith Webster and other Aloha leaders for their time and effort. They only need 3 or 4 more members for me to charter their section at the SLM. My job : My job is to develop and support section leadership. My job is also to communicate to sections what is happening in ISA from a global level. My third job is to file district reports. District reports are section activity feedback to the ISA Executive Board. The more they hear of section successes and volunteer contribution, the more support is available for me to help you. Please add me to your newsletter distribution, so I can report all your terrific section activities, successes and accomplishments. Career Advancement & Training Passive wireless sensor technology seminar, June 6-7 Continued on page 8 The second Passive Wireless Sensor Technology Workshop sponsored by ISA Communications Division, will be held in parallel with the IIS Symposium on June 6 and 7 at the Hyatt in La Jolla, CA. Passive Wireless Sensors have no battery, no electronics to speak of, very small form factor, can be made to withstand extreme environments (as necessary) and have several modalities. These can be RFID-based, RLC-based, SAW-based, Near-field Communications based and even hybrid forms augmented by a second RF energy source that provides additional performance(range, resolution, etc). When pulsed, these PWST sensors can return ID, Range, Real-time Sensing and even stored and updatable data. Presenters include developers like Environetix, RF SAW, ASRDC, Syntonics and Univ of Central Florida as well as end-users like BP, Shell, Rockwell Automation, NavAir and Commercial Aerospace end-users of the technology. ISA Comm Division Symposium(including the PWST Workshop) registration is at: Last year s presentations, brochure and summary can be viewed at This worlshop is a follow-up to the Continued on page 5 June 2-7: 58th International Instrumentation Symposium See schedule on page 10 Sponsored by the Process Measurement and Control; Test Measurement and Aerospace Industries Divisions, the 58th International Instrumentation Symposium is ISA s longest running symposium. It is being held June 2-7 at the La Jolla Hyatt Regency in conjunction with Propulsion Instrumentation Working Group. The Symposium will provide an outstanding opportunity to gain valuable technical information and training in the traditional areas of measurements/sensors, instrumentation systems, data and advanced system/sensor technology as well as innovative papers in many other state of the art areas. Some of the major topic categories include Edward Naranjo, ISA Orange County, IIS General Chair Turbine Engine Testing, Platform Testing, Test Facilities, Metrology, Instrumentation, Data systems, Communications, Cyber and Homeland Security, Safety Instrumented Systems, Process Measurement and Control, and Control System Instrumentation. For the latest list of paper sessions, short courses, workshops and tutorials refer to the ISA web site. Papers will be considered for publication in International Instrumentation Symposium 2012 the ISA technical journal. Abstracts for papers are due by January 20, Students are encouraged to submit papers for the student sessions. For more info, contact Edward Naranjo, General Chair (949) edwardn@generalmonitors.com. 4 Cutting Edge Technology Workshop Passive wireless sensors workshop highlight ISA Communication Division Symposium Hyatt Regency La Jolla Resort, San Diego, June 5-7 Sponsored by the Communications Division of ISA and co-located with ISA s longest running symposium, the 58th International Instrumentation Symposium, the 2012 ISA Communications Division Symposium (CommDiv) will provide an outstanding opportunity to learn about the latest advances in all forms of industrial communications from telemetry, fieldbus, Ethernet, and wireless technologies. We will be building on the success of last year s Passive Wireless Sensor workshop by offering this full workshop as one track in the Symposia. The Passive Wireless Sensor Workshop is being held in conjunction with NASA, BP p.l.c. and DOE/ORNL to bring together Passive Wireless Sensor technology developers, manufacturers and potential industry end-users together to understand the larger market drivers that will drive costs down and applications up. We will also discuss logical next steps. Workshop objectives are to understand various PWST technologies, actual & potential uses, and maturity; to assess it s future applications/advantages/limitations in various industries; to assess what is needed for high volume production, standardization & communication.; and to precipitate individual and group next step thinking to further develop/apply PWSTs via one-on-ones during the meeting and splinter groups. For information about registering for this symposium or the passive sensor workshop, please contact George Studo at (763) or george.f.studor@nasa.gov. This year s invited keynote speakers will offer insight into advanced instrumentation technologies and how these interface with human processes across several industries and applications: Paul Gruhn. P. E., Safety Expert, ICS Triplex, is a member of the ISA84 standard committee (on safety instrumented systems) and the ISA101 standard committee (on human machine interfaces), and is the developer and instructor of ISA courses on safety systems and author of two ISA textbooks. Gruhn is the developer of the first commercial safety system software modeling program. Dr. Richard Rivir, Chief Scientist, Wright Patterson AFB, is Chief Scientist, Propulsion Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He serves as the directorate s principal scientific and technical adviser and primary authority for the technical content and quality of the directorate s science and technology portfolio. Dr. Richard Gran, CEO Mathematical Analytics Company, was part of the 1962 design team at Grumman that developed the Lunar Module Digital Autopilot. This effort, along with a similar effort on the Command Service Module, resulted in the first all digital control system ever flown on a manned vehicle. At Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor he developed the control system for the plasma position and current; the X-29 Digital Fly-by-wire control system; and research on the control of flexible systems.
