First Revision No. 1-NFPA [ Section No ] The following conditions shall be met when an interior finish material is tested using the test protocol of NFPA 286, Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Evaluating Contribution of Wall and Ceiling Interior Finish to Room Fire Growth : (1) Flames shall not spread to the ceiling during the 40 kw exposure. (2) During the 160 kw exposure, the following criteria shall be met: (a) Flame shall not spread to the outer extremities of the sample on the 8 ft 12 ft (2440 mm 3660 mm) wall. (b) Flashover shall not occur. (3) The peak heat release rate throughout the test shall not exceed 800 kw. (4) Where limitations are desired on smoke development, the total smoke released throughout the test shall not exceed 1000 meters (3282 feet squared). Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 10:38:57 EDT 2015 Committee Statement: The total smoke released requirement from NFPA 286 was missing. It has been added as an optional measurement when smoke limitations are desired. That is the requirement that correlates with the smoke developed index from ASTM E84 and it is included in all codes and standards that assess materials or products to NFPA 286. Response Message: Public Input No. 17-NFPA [Section No ]

First Revision No. 2-NFPA [ Section No ] Loose-fill insulation, other than cellulose loose-fill insulation, that cannot be mounted in the ASTM E 84 E84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, test apparatus without a screen or other artificial support, shall have a flame spread index of 25 or less and a smoke developed index of 450 or less when tested in accordance with CAN/ULC-S102.2-M88, Method of Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Flooring, Floor Coverings, and Miscellaneous Materials and Assemblies. Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 10:40:13 EDT 2015 : This simply eliminates the date, since the latest edition is dated 2010 and not Response Message: Public Input No. 20-NFPA [Section No ]

First Revision No. 3-NFPA [ Section No ] Cellulose loose-fill insulation that is not spray applied and that complies with the requirements of and shall be required to meet a smoke developed index not exceeding 450 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84 CAN/ULC S102.2, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials Standard Method of Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Flooring, Floor Coverings, and Miscellaneous Materials and Assemblies, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 10:42:20 EDT 2015 Committee Statement: It has now been shown that cellulose loose-fill insulation cannot be tested appropriately using ASTM E84 (or UL 723) and needs to be tested to CAN/ULC S This change has been incorporated into other codes and standards. Moreover, ASTM E84 does not have a mandatory way of testing cellulose loose-fill insulation because it would require a metal grid that is so fine that the result is heavily affected by the metal. Response Message: Public Input No. 19-NFPA [Section No ]

First Revision No. 4-NFPA [ Section No ] Cellular or foam plastic materials shall be permitted if they are separated from the interior of a building and from plenums by an approved thermal barrier consisting of either of 1 2 in. (13 mm) gypsum wallboard or equivalent material and the a material that complies with the requirements of the temperature transmission fire test and of the integrity fire test in NFPA 275, and the foam plastic material also exhibits a flame spread index not exceeding 75 and a smoke developed index not exceeding 450 when tested in accordance with ASTM E 84 E84, Standard Test Method of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials The thermal barrier constructed of the equivalent material shall limit the average temperature rise of the unexposed surface to not more than 250 F (121 C) after 15 minutes of fire exposure complying with the standard time-temperature curve of ASTM E 119, Standard Test Method for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, or ANSI/UL 263, Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials The thermal barrier shall remain in place for 15 minutes when tested in accordance with NFPA 286, Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Evaluating Contribution of Wall and Ceiling Interior Finish to Room Fire Growth, with the acceptance criteria of Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 10:44:11 EDT 2015 Committee Statement: The requirements in and are already included in NFPA 275, which is the standard that is used for developing and listing thermal barriers. It includes the ASTM E119 and the NFPA 286 testing. NFPA 275 also includes UL 1040, UL 1715 and FM Response Message: Public Input No. 18-NFPA [Section No ]

First Revision No. 11-NFPA [ Section No ] All new manufactured homes shall be protected throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, or NFPA 13D. Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 11:50:12 EDT 2015 Committee Statement: Response Message: NFPA 750 is not an approved automatic sprinkler system and is excluded from this list because it has not been proved to be equivalent to any of the 13 systems.

First Revision No. 10-NFPA [ Section No ] Where water mist systems are installed, the systems shall be designed, installed and tested in accordance with NFPA 750, Standard on Water Mist Fire Protection Systems. Submittal Date: Tue Mar 10 11:41:06 EDT 2015 : It has not been demonstrated that a 750 system is equivalent to a 13, 13D or 13R system. Response Message:

6 First Revision No. 8-NFPA [ Section No. A ] A A cooling load (heat gain) calculation is required to determine the required capacity of equipment to cool a home efficiently and economically. The cooling load is dependent on the orientation, location, and structure of the home. Central air conditioners operate most efficiently and provide the greatest comfort when their capacity closely approximates the calculated cooling load. Each home s air conditioner should be sized in accordance with Chapter 27 of the 2004 ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals Handbook Fundamentals, once the location and orientation are known.
