1 PALM BEACH GARDENS FIRE RESCUE 2017 Fourth Quarter Report Members of Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
2 2017 FOURTH QUARTER Total calls for service: 3,036 Annual Inspections: 405 Plan Review: 246 New Construction: 249 Fire Investigations: 2 Total Dollar loss: $145,000 Potential Loss: $13,183,020 Community Education: Total Attendees: 1340 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During the fourth quarter of 2017, Fire Rescue responded to 3,036 emergency calls, 81% of which were medical calls. This was a busy quarter for the department! We participated in several community events, including National Night Out, Read for the Record, Suits for Seniors at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School, and served as guest lecturers for the medical magnet students at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School. The Department also partnered with Jupiter Medical Center to host a CPR event and hosted an annual Home Evacuation Drill at Paloma during National Fire Prevention Month. Fire safety presentations were also given at the Riverside Youth Enrichment Center. The department raised $2,950 during Breast Cancer Awareness month; the funds were sent to the Susan G. Komen foundation and also provided financial support to a nurse currently receiving chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Over $1,100 was raised for the department s adopted family this holiday season. We surprised them with gifts from their wish list and a visit from the department s fire engine on December 25 th. In continuing with the department s goal of increasing stroke awareness, a PSA featuring Division Chief Bessette aired at the Cobb Theatre during the month of December. Chief DeRita filmed a PSA regarding golf cart safety for Frenchman s Creek. Deputy Chief Broedell was included in panel discussion regarding the opiate epidemic at Cardinal Newman High School. We also hosted a meeting with the Florida Fire Chief s Association and Florida Chief Financial Officer Patronis served as the guest speaker. Battalion Chief Haywood, Captain Olliff, Captain Morejon, and Captain Timmer all retired this quarter. We wish them well in their next adventures! Congratulations to Deputy Chief Broedell for graduating with his Bachelor s Degree in Emergency Management from Barry University! 2

6 Community Education Activities *Community Events School Programs Station Tours *Community events included "National Night Out" and "Get Out - Stay Out" during this quarter There were 36 participants in CPR classes during this quarter. Of those, 27 received stroke risk assessments. FIRE INVESTIGATIONS 4 th Quarter 2017 Total Dollar Loss $145, Potential Dollar Loss $13,183, rd Quarter 2017 Total Dollar Loss $248, Potential Dollar Loss $11,339, th Quarter 2016 Total Dollar Loss $8, Potential Dollar Loss $4,072, Total Dollar Loss indicates the estimated dollar amount needed to repair the structure and replace contents damaged by fire. Potential Dollar Loss is the actual dollar value of the structure as per the Property Appraiser s Office. It indicates what the dollar loss would be if the structure were completely destroyed by fire. This dollar amount includes the contents of the structure, which is generally considered to be 30% of the structure s value. There are several factors that can limit the total dollar loss amount of a structure. These include: compliance with fire codes, early detection (fire alarms), and fire suppression equipment (e.g. fire sprinklers and commercial cooking fire suppression systems). Additionally, quick fire attacks made by Fire Rescue crews also play an important role in limiting the amount of damage caused by fire and smoke. 6
