Public Safety Mission Statement The mission of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Police Department is to promote a campus environment that is safe for all members of the campus community and conducive to living and learning. The University Police Department will support a cohesive environment where the community works together to enhance the image and reputation of our community. We pledge to encourage harmonious relations among faculty, staff, and students and the external community. We pledge to treat all people with courtesy, respect and dignity as we ourselves would want to be treated; and to enforce the law within the community with uniformity and without regard to race, disability, religion, national origin, color, sex, age, sexual orientation or veteran s status.

Patrol Services Police Officers patrol the University grounds, residence halls, classroom and admissions buildings 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Patrol methods include foot patrol, vehicle patrol and bicycle patrol. IUP Police

Crime Prevention Residence Halls Police Officers patrol the residence halls daily. Officers meets with the residence hall staff, interact with students, and provide educational programs. Programs include Personal Safety, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Theft Prevention.

IUP Parking/Visitor Center Many visitors to campus need a place where they can go and receive information, parking permits, etc., without driving around campus looking for their destination. This visitor center will provide that service. Monday Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm (Closed HOLIDAYS & WEEKENDS) The office will also accept payment of parking tickets, issue temporary parking permits, securing special parking for meetings, special events, etc.

Parking Enforcement Parking enforcement takes place on campus: 7 a.m. 5 p.m. - Monday through Friday all lots 2 a.m. 6 a.m. DAILY (7 days a week) majority of lots Please go on-line to view all parking regulations.

Visit Transportation IndiGo provides transportation on and off campus. There is three buses: IUP Campus Express; IUP Park-n-Ride; and IUP Late Night Shuttle from Robertshaw lot to Campus Residence Halls. Free on IUP Campus. Going Off Campus on an IndiGO bus? Simply show your driver your I Card each time you ride

IUP Emergency Information System Means of the University contacting students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians in case of a life threatening situation. An example would be weather related such as a tornado warning, which is when a tornado is actually sighted in the area. Another example would be an active shooter.

A look at some of the services provided by University Police/ Department of Public Safety

Vehicle Entry If you lock your keys in your vehicle, the University Police will attempt to open your vehicle for you. A vehicle waiver must be signed.

Walking Escorts University Police provide walking escorts 24 hours/7 days a week. While on IUP property, University Police will provide walking escorts to & from buildings and to personal vehicles.

Battery Pack Easily start your car with a light weight, easy to use battery pack. Pick it up at the Police Station dispatch desk. Some form of identification is required.

Emergency Blue Light Phones There are numerous emergency blue light phones placed throughout campus. A push of a button automatically connects you with the police dispatcher and alerts the dispatcher of the phone location. A Police Officer WILL respond to every activated call placed from a blue light phone.

Students can have anything of value engraved. Computers, Cellular phones, TVs, video games, etc. Bicycles can also be registered. A permanent sticker with an identification number will be affix to the bicycle. If an item is stolen, it will assist in getting the item back to the student if found. Operation ID and Bicycle Registration

Attempt to Locate Often we get calls from parents who have not heard from their son or daughter for quite some time. This is not unusual. Students who become involved in a lot of extra curricular activities tend to emerge themselves and forget to call home. Our department will attempt to locate that student and have them call home. It s difficult to accept the fact that our son s and daughter s have become adults.

Crime Alert A University campus is a community. Crime does take place in all communities. We do many things at the university to teach how to prevent crime. When a crime takes place that the university community should know about, a crime alert is posted throughout the campus and on the University Police Department s website.

Fire Alarms Every building on campus has fire alarm pull stations, smoke detectors, and all residence halls are equipped with sprinkler systems. Anytime a building alarm is activated it rings into the Police Communications Office. Within minutes a Police Officer is at the scene of the alarm. Students are taught to call 911 first if they see fire or smoke. Most of the fire alarms are false alarms caused by burnt food, hair dryers, etc. Students must call the IUP University Police for all false alarms.

Assist Citizens Ambulance Anytime an ambulance is dispatched to the university, the University Police will respond to the call. The Police Officer, will be on scene to assist the paramedics.

Theft Awareness Thefts often occur on a university. Students are reminded constantly NOT to leave personal items and articles unattended in the library, dining halls, or other places and to lock their doors.

Alcohol Awareness Purchase, Consumption, Possession, or Transportation of alcoholic beverages under the age of 21 is a CRIMINAL violation. A student under 21 can be both - *criminally cited through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (with the possibility of fines and loss of driver s license) and *judicially referred through the Office of Student Conduct.

Alcohol Awareness University Police are proactive in the prevention of underage drinking. Alcohol Awareness programs are provided to educate students on the risks and consequences of alcohol consumption. University Police, Indiana Borough Police, State Police, Liquor Control Enforcement are all a part of the Collective Action Against Underage Drinking Coalition. Extra alcohol patrols do take place during the semesters.

Red Zone Awareness The Red Zone is the time from the beginning of the fall semester until Thanksgiving break begins. It s believed that there are more sexual assaults on United States college campuses during this time than any other time during the school year. Risk Reduction Techniques include: Understand the impact alcohol has on your mind and body Communicate with confidence Look out for your friends Trust your instincts Set clear limits If you choose to drink, drink responsibly Know campus and community resources

Vehicles -Parents/guardians PLEASE make sure the vehicle your student is driving has current inspection, registration, and insurance cards. - Discard all old/expired registration cards and insurance cards. - Discuss what to do if your student is in a fender bender, if the vehicle breaks down, etc. - Equip the vehicle with a ice scraper and shovel for the winter.

Move in day Be prepared and be on time. Have a dolly and tarps to place belonging on. Parents please display your hang tag on your mirror so we know what building you need to go to. Once at the residence hall, 15 min. will be allotted to unload personal belongings, then the vehicle must be moved to long term parking. DO NOT leave your vehicle unattended, you will be towed! Patience!!!!
