2 PET Center Monitors Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) is a non-invasive, diagnostic imaging technique for measuring the metabolic activity of cells in the human body. A PET Scan is a simple procedure involving the use of a small amount of a radioactive material, similar to what is used in other nuclear medicine procedures. The radioactivity is attached or tagged to a compound that is familiar to the body. Because of this radioactivity, it is necessary to have the proper monitoring instrumentation to measure areas and air vent effluents associated with these "tagged radioactive compounds". Aptec-NRC provides standard radiation instrumentation for monitoring areas, ventillation air, hands and feet, radiological analysis, surveys, and doorway monitors in all types of P.E.T. Centers. Stack Monitors For measuring the air released into the atmosphere through the P.E.T. Center's vent duct or stacks, Aptec-NRC offers different types of systems (mostly dependent upon each specific P.E.T. centers' regulatory and plant physical configuration requirements and the sensitivity desired). Aptec-NRC provides efficient air intake and exhaust stack monitors that have three main types of detector configurations. GSP-100 Gamma Scintillation Probe With Internal SCA The first, Model GSP-100 is a gamma scintillation probe that detects radioactive gases flowing through the exhaust stack or air intake plenum and provides a continual readout of the detected activity using a scintillator - NaI(TI) 1.5 in. x 1 in. (38 mm x 25.4 mm) probe. This gamma scintillation probe has an internal single channel analyzer that has both an upper and lower discriminator that is fully adjustable over the entire measuring range. This probe requires a mounting plate to be affixed to the side of the vent duct that will hold it in the proper position inside the air duct flow stream. The GSP-100 is Mounted inside the plenum and affords accurate and drift face detection of gamma activity using a unique "gain stabilization" NaI(TI) technique that uses a light emitting diode (LED). It also includes a detector thermistor that automatically corrects for detector temperature variations and extends the calibration cycle of the radiation monitoring channel. 3 SA20-I SA20-I Flow Through Ion Chamber The second type of air flow detection offered by Aptec-NRC consists of a Flow-through Ion Chamber Detector Model SA20-I. The SA20-I detector has a rectangular size of 24 in. L x in. W x 10 in. H. It is intended to be directly inserted within the existing duct work. In most cases, an adapter to mate up the detector with the duct size is required. This adapter may need to have a built-in "anti-vibration buffer" (i.e. rubber section) to reduce detector vibration that could harm its' sensitive electronics. Sizes for both the adapter and/or buffer will vary depending upon the duct size. Aptec-NRC can also provide for "special circumstances" for mounting the detector. With the SA20, Aptec-NRC also provides a Model CA-300 current amplifier that provides the necessary power to the unit. (61 cm x 33 cm x 25 cm) approximately 30 lbs (13.6 kg) CAM-110G Off-Line Monitor For much more sensitive and off-line sample collection requirements, a third monitoring configuration is available that includes Model CAM-110G. This unit is not installed in the duct but rather on an open frame skid that is located in close proximity to the duct. A continuous air sample is withdrawn through an isokinetic sampling device which is installed in the duct. The sample is drawn through tubing which is attached to the sample nozzle and a pump which is located on the skid mentioned above. Once the air sample has been measured it passes through a second tubing run back into the exhaust stack. As with the other exhaust stack monitors, an airflow sensor is also mounted inside the duct. Centers' requirements, an air flow sensor may be necessary. The use of the FMA-100A allows the "rate" of release into the atmosphere to be determined in "real time" and can be used with either Model GSP-100 gamma scintillation probe, Model SA20-1 flow through ion chamber, or CAM-100GI described below. The Aptec-NRC standard velocity sensor (FMA-100A) is 10-5,000 SCFM (the speed of the air through the duct). The FMA-100A is not weatherproof and requires an enclosure. This unit needs to be mounted directly onto the duct pipe. The FMA-100A requires a probe mount and separate DC power supply. Page 3

4 ADM-606M Stack and Area Monitoring Ratemeter Display Whether used for inputs and displays for the air monitoring instrumentation such as the GSP-100 or SA20-I detectors or the GP-100 standard gamma detectors (described later), Aptec-NRC supplies a multifunctional Model ADM-606M ratemeter that can have up to three detector inputs. Normally located in an area that it is easily accessible by the end user (usually in the LAB), the ADM-606M can be wall-mounted through screw holes in the back of the unit or it can stand alone on the counter top. Designed to operate as a "universal" rate-meter, the ADM-606M accepts a wide variety of inputs from the different types of detectors. The unit has built-in radiation alarms (FAIL, WARNING, and HIGH) that are user adjustable and include DPDT relay contacts to annunciate and send signals to various electronic devices that must be either activated or deactivated when a pre-set level is reached. The independent HIGH and WARNING alarms can be set over the full range of the instrument. The ADM-606M is equipped with a three channel microprocessor which enables simultaneous monitoring of three detectors. The unit includes remote calibration and built-in diagnostics capabilities. It has a nonvolatile memory that allows historical data storage of 30 each: one minute, ten minutes, one hour, and one day averages (+ events). The rechargeable battery provides power for operation during a main power failure (24 hour capability). For PET applications the ADM-606M is used with various detector inputs as well as the FMA-100 flow sensor and CA-300 current amplifier (if applicable). The ADM-606M is also interfaced with a RS-232 to RS-485 converter used for PC communication and display. 6 RADACS - Radiological Assessment Display And Control Software The RADACS Software System provides real-time data reporting and control through a user-friendly graphics display with an easy to use operator interface system. Data is collected, analyzed, displayed and recorded in real-time while posting alarms for operator notification. The operators will be able to display and perform the following at either the ADM-606M or RADACS hardware platform in real time: a) Current readout of background or gaseous activity b) Detector information (type, SCA set-points, etc.) c) High/Alert/Fail alarm status d) Detector status (fail, normal, etc) e) Keypad status f) Trend information g) Graphic representation of trending data RADACS functions include: Collecting, converting, storing, integrating, and analyzing data from all monitors. Detecting, annunciating, and storing alarm conditions. Providing current, as well as historical, displays of any channels on operator request. Generating system and graphic displays. 7 Display II Real Time Single Channel Trace Display IV Historical Multi Channel Trace Some Examples of RADACS Screens Display II (Real Time Single Channel Trace) Selecting a channel (by double clicking the appropriate display box in Display I), will display the Real Time Single Channel Trace. The Real Time Single Channel Trace display provides the user with three options for data presentation for the selected channel. The first (and default) view of the data is the Instantaneous Data view in a columnar format. By selecting this tab, the user can view the real time data for the channel as it is received from the monitor. Data is displayed in table type format showing various metrics such as date/time stamp, value, validity flag, etc. The second view presents the data in a graphical format. As with most RADACS functions, the user has extensive control over details of the display. For example, the user selects the graph type (i.e. line, bar, chart, etc.). Additionally, the graph area can be panned (left, right, up or down) and zoomed (in/out). Other controls for graph color, tick line indication, point display style, line display style, etc., are available on the Graph Configuration tab. One minute average data is shown in the third view of the data. This data is displayed in table type format showing various metrics such as date/time stamp, average value, maximum value, minimum value, validity flag, etc. Display IV (Historical Multi Channel Trace) The Historical Multi Channel Trace display is similar to the Historical Single Channel Trace display. The display again provides tabular and graphical views of the data for a user selected period and averaging interval. For this Display IV, the difference from Display III lies in the Multi Channel versus Single Channel functionality. This Historical Multi Channel Trace display provides the user the ability to view data from a group of channels simultaneously. The data groups (or templates as they are referred to in RADACS) are previously defined via a Template Library. The number of templates maintained by RADACS as well as the number of channels contained within each template or group is a function of hardware and aesthetic limitations. RADACS Tools Menu and Functions In addition to the more commonly used displays as described above, RADACS provides a number of tools and library functions to further maintain and configure RADACS for optimal use. 8 PET CENTER MONITORS PET Libraries The RADACS PET library data is easily accessible and includes: Isotope Library, PET Target Library, PET Tracer Library, Release Point Library, Release Point Sensor Library, Release Point Limit Library, Sensor Isotope Calibration Library. PET Alarm Surveillance Function The Alarm Surveillance function provides the ability to associate the occurrence of the various alarm events with the corresponding rate information stored in the RADACS database RADACS can be used to monitor the entire cyclotron facility including the cyclotron vault and control room, the hot cells and hot cell room, target preparation and recovery rooms, the radiochemistry laboratory and radio-pharmacy, the waste water storage room, all corridors surrounding these areas and the door-ways that exit from the cyclotron complex. In addition, all exhaust stacks serving the cyclotron facility can be continuously monitored. Each computer & monitor is equipped with an 8 hour battery back-up in the event of a power failure. All of the Digital Area Rate-meters, that feed information from their associated detectors back to the computers, can be wired in such a manner that the loss of any single Rate-meter will not interrupt the flow of data from the remainder of the installation. These signals, available from the computers or the area rate-meter, can be used to activate or de-activate various fan motors, dampers, door interlocks or any other electrically powered device in the facility.
