2 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS 2.2 PIPE 2. Provide Owner with following: a) Manufacturer's literature and instructions describing operation and maintenance of equipment and devices installed. b) Fire Protection Sprinkler System Zone Map c) Current copy of NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water- Based Fire Protection Systems. A. Materials and Equipment: 1. Materials and equipment in system shall be new and current products of manufacturer regularly engaged in production of such materials and equipment. B. Approval Guides: 1. Unless otherwise shown, products shall be UL Listed in the latest publication of the UL Fire Protection Equipment Directory. A. Above Ground 2.3 VALVES 1. Carbon Steel, 2 and smaller: a. Pipe: Black Carbon steel pipe, Schedule 40, ASTM A795, ASTM A53, or A135 b. Fittings: 1) Malleable iron, threaded, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 2) Cast iron, threaded, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 3) Ductile iron, threaded, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 4) Cast iron, flanged, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 5) Grooved mechanical coupling, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 2. Black Carbon Steel, 2½ and larger: a. Pipe: Black Carbon steel pipe, Schedule 10, ASTM A795, ASTM A53, or A135 b. Fittings: Grooved mechanical coupling, 300 psi CWP pressure rating, flanged 300 psi CWP pressure rating. Victaulic or equal. 3. CVPC (listed for Fire Protection) a. Spears or equal. A. Gate Valve: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Kennedy or equal 2. Outside screw and yoke (OS&Y), gate valve, bronze body and trim or cast iron body bronze mounted and rated for 300 psi, non-shock cold water working pressure. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

3 3. Provide high pressure valves when pressures exceed 175 psi water working pressure. B. Check Valve: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Victaulic or equal 2. Iron body, bronze seat, stainless steel clapper with a replaceable rubber seal. 3. Provide high pressure valves and fittings when pressures exceed 175 psi water working pressure. C. Ball Valve: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Argco, Victaulic, or equal 2. Provide high pressure valves and fittings when pressures exceed 175 psi water working pressure. D. Butterfly Valve: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Victaulic or equal 2. Provide high pressure valves and fittings when pressures exceed 175 psi water working pressure. E. Detector Check Valve: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Ames, or equal 2. Provide high pressure detector check and fittings when pressures exceed 175 psi. F. Test and Drain Valves: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Victaulic, or equal 2. Provide high pressure valves and fittings where pressures exceed 175 psi water working pressure. G. Drain Valves: 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Argco, or equal 2. Globe, angle or ball valve type 3. Provide high pressure valves and fittings when pressures exceed 175 psi cold water working pressure. H. Fire Department Valve (FDV): 1. Acceptable manufacturers: Croker, or equal 2. Fire Department valve shall be 2-1/2 angle valve, able to regulate inlet pressure, cast brass body with brass and stainless steel internal parts, indicating scale, nonrising stem, red hand wheel. Finish shall be rough brass. Valve cap for 2-1/2 valve shall be 2-1/2 cap with chain. Cap and chain shall match finish of valve body. Threads shall match Fire Department Standards. I. Provide identification sign (enamel on metal) for valves per NFPA requirements. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

4 2.4 TAMPER SWITCH A. Acceptable manufacturers: Potter, System Sensor, or equal. B. Outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) supervisory switch, provided with 2 sets of contacts. C. Grooved Victaulic butterfly valve with internal factory installed tamper switch with 2 sets of contacts. D. Unit shall be compatible with Fire Alarm System. 2.5 FLOW SWITCH A. Acceptable manufacturers: Potter, System Sensor, or equal B. Vane type water-flow switch for use in wet sprinkler systems, minimum 300 psi service pressure rating, 10 gpm minimal flow rate to activate alarm, and 2 sets of contacts.. C. Unit shall be compatible with Fire Alarm System. 2.6 SPRINKLER HEAD A. Manufacturers: 1. Shall be manufactured by Reliable, Tyco Fire Products, Viking, or equal. B. Provide the following type of sprinkler head: 1. Unfinished areas such as mechanical spaces: 1. Standard coverage, brass upright or pendent, 300 psi CWP pressure rating 2. In areas with finished or suspended ceilings: 2. Standard coverage, Concealed or Recessed Pendent or Side Wall, 1/2" orifice, 175 or 300 psi CWP pressure rating, with white cover plate. C. Extended coverage sprinkler heads can be used on the project. D. Temperature ratings of sprinkler heads shall vary if installed close to heat sources, under skylights or in special hazard areas. Refer to NFPA 13 for requirements. E. Provide high pressure sprinklers where pressures exceed 175 psi working water pressure. F. Sprinkler Cabinets: 1. Shall be complete with required number of spare sprinkler heads of each type and temperature rating per NFPA Shall be provided with at least one sprinkler wrench for each type of sprinkler installed. 3. Provide multiple cabinets to meet this requirement. 4. Coordinate cabinet locations with Owner's representative. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

5 2.7 FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION (FDC) A. Manufacturers: 1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Badger-Powhatan, Croker Corp., Elkhart Brass, Potter-Roemer, Tyco Fire Products, or equal. B. Fire Department Connection: 2.8 BALL DRIP 1. Provide flush type, cast brass body with drop clappers, faceplate shall be polished chrome finish, with lettering reading AUTOSPKR STANDPIPE. Unit shall include 2-1/2" snoots with rigid end threading to match local fire department standards by pin-lug hose thread swivels, pin- lug plugs and chains. Finish of snoots shall match faceplate finish. A. Acceptable manufacturer: Potter-Roemer, Reliable, Tyco Fire Products, or equal. B. Provide bronze ball drip for fire department connection (FDC) inside of building. 2.9 HANGERS A. Acceptable manufacturers: Caddy, Anvil, B-Line, Tolco, or equal B. Concrete expansion hangers, when provided, are to be Hilti, Phillips, Powers, or equal. C. Hanger rods shall comply with Manufacturer Standardization Society (MSS) standards and manufacturer's published load rating. D. Provide hanger rod, hanger rod attachments, bolts, nuts, studs and washers with electroplated zinc coating. E. Riser clamps shall be electroplated zinc coated, black steel or hot-dipped galvanized finish and shall not protrude more than 2 beyond edge of hole PRESSURE GAUGES A. Acceptable manufacturers: Ashcroft, Argco, Viking, or equal B. Pressure gauges shall be 3-1/2", corrosion resistant moving parts, polycarbonate window, and provided with connection not smaller than 1/4 NPT, 600 psi rating. C. Include bronze 3-way angle valve with provisions for draining on each pressure gauge. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 DESIGN CRITERIA A. Flow Test Sprinkler contractor shall obtain an existing flow test from the local utility authority. Flow test shall include: AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

6 1. Static Pressure 2. Residual Pressure 3. Test Location 4. Test Date 5. Test conducted by or information supplied by: (provider source) B. The elevation of the gauge hydrant relative to the building floor slab shall be included. C. Send current hydrant flow test data to General Contractor. D. Hydraulically calculated system shall be designed to a minimum of 5 psi below available water flow curve. E. Basis of Design: 1. Wet Sprinkler Systems: Provide a separate wet sprinkler system with supervised shutoff valve, water flow alarm switch, and test and drain provisions for each floor level. Each floor level of the building shall be a separate sprinkler system zone. 2. Office areas and general building spaces shall be hydraulically designed to provide minimum density of.10 gpm per sq ft over hydraulically remote area, per NFPA 13. Maximum spacing shall not exceed 225 sq ft per head. Residential Occupancies shall be designed in Accordance with NFPA 13R (.05 gpm per the most demanding 4 adjacent sprinklers- Minimum Flow & Pressure requirements per manufacturer) & or per NFPA #13 (.10 gpm per the most demanding 4 adjacent sprinklers- Note: Base line flows and pressures must meet or exceed those determined by the manufacturer) 3. Mechanical, electrical, generator room and storage areas shall be hydraulically designed to provide minimum density of.20 gpm per sq ft over hydraulically remote area, per NFPA 13. Maximum spacing shall not exceed 130 sq ft per head. F. Hose Streams: 1. Add 100 gpm hose stream to sprinkler zone hydraulic calculations for light hazard occupancies. 2. Add 250 gpm hose stream to sprinkler zone hydraulic calculations for ordinary hazard occupancies. G. Wet Standpipe: 1. Provide a Class I manual wet (for buildings not classified as High-Rise Building and an automatic wet standpipe system (Classified as a High-Rise Building) in each egress stair. Provide 2½ pressure reducing hose valves at each stairway floor or intermediate landing, and at each horizontal exit. Provide a supervised butterfly valve at the base of each wet standpipe. Wet standpipe system is to be provided in accordance with NFPA Standard Drain Riser: Provide a drain riser in stairwells to allow for testing of water flow alarm and pressure reducing hose valves where PRV s are applicable. H. Fire Protection System Layout and Installation Drawings: AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

7 3.2 INSPECTION 1. Contractor shall review Design Drawings and shall provide installation drawings, calculations, and product data sheets. 2. Conceal sprinkler piping above ceilings where possible. 3. Submit shop drawings, calculations and product data sheets for coordination review to: General Contractor, and permitting authority. 4. Contractor shall coordinate routing of piping with other trades. 5. Contractor shall participate in coordination process and shall not install piping prior to coordination with other trades. A. Investigate site conditions; Forward discrepancies to General Contractor before proceeding with construction. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. Install hydraulically designed sprinkler system and associated accessories according to requirements of NFPA 13R & #13 and as shown on drawings. B. Install hydraulically designed standpipe system and associated accessories according to requirements of NFPA 14 and as shown on drawings. C. Install pipe and fittings according to requirements of pipe manufacturer. D. Keep materials within listed temperature range to assure jointing in accordance with manufacturer's requirements. E. Pipe and fittings shall be of corresponding materials when assembled. F. Provide test connection for each flow switch. G. Discharge test connections inside building to receptacles provided as part of plumbing system. H. Drain line detailed adjacent to standpipe/sprinkler risers shall be considered as part of Sprinkler System from combination test/auxiliary drain valve for each zone or sub-zone shown on plans to plumbing receptacle. I. Provide auxiliary drains at low points of systems per requirements of NFPA 13. J. Sprinklers are not required to be installed in the center of ceiling tiles. K. Provide minimum 1 outlets for sprinklers located in shelled spaces. L. Install tamper switch on each shutoff valve. M. Install chain and lock with each shutoff valve to prevent inadvertent closing of valve. N. Install sprinkler heads as recommended by manufacturer. Sprinklers shall be set level and at locations to avoid interference with spray pattern of sprinkler. When ducts and lights are obstructions to sprinkler distribution, provide additional heads beneath obstruction. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

8 O. Make joints of threaded pipe by cutting pipe square and reaming inside. P. Install joints for mechanical coupled pipe according to manufacturer's recommendations. Q. Pipe grooving shall be per coupling manufacturer's instructions. R. Install flexible fitting at building's expansion joints per manufacturer's instructions. S. Install pressure gauges as required in manufacturer's installation instructions and as required per NFPA standards. 3.4 CLEANING A. Ensure underground feed pipe has been flushed by the underground piping installing contractor, to clear out construction debris, prior to connecting aboveground fire protection system to it. Underground feed pipe installing contractor shall provide Test Certificates indicating piping has been flushed and tested in accordance with NFPA TESTING A. Perform all NFPA required acceptance tests. B. Perform all NFPA required acceptance tests. C. Test sprinkler system as entire system or partial system. System shall be hydrostatically tested at not less than 200 psi or 50 psi above static pressure in excess of 150 psi for 2 h. No leakage allowed. D. Hydrostatically test piping between the exterior fire department connection (FDC) and the check valve in the fire department inlet pipe in the same manner as the balance of the system. E. Pipe shall not be concealed until satisfactorily pressure tested. F. Conduct drain test. Record static pressure and residual pressure per NFPA 13. G. Owner's representative or engineer may witness tests. Contractor shall notify General contractor a minimum of 3 days in advance to allow for participation. The Authority Having Jurisdiction shall witness all required testing. Log of tests shall be kept at job site and shall identify: 1. Who performed test 2. Time of test 3. Date of test 4. Section of system tested 5. Results of test 6. Completed Contractor's Material and Test Certification forms from NFPA 13 and NFPA 14 H. Operate flow switches to test that signals are transmitted to Fire Alarm Control Panel. Include test for tamper switches. AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
