2 ABOUT THE CLIENT Dextra Lighting s design for Coop s new store in Llanishen, South Wales, shows how simple it can be to make incredible savings in retail lighting. The new system uses a third of the luminaries compared to designs proposed by competitors and makes the most of the latest high-efficiency LED sources to maximise ROIs for the group. Since 1986, Dundonald International Ice Bowl has delighted and entertained the Castlereagh community with the only public ice skating rink in Northern Ireland, one of the most up-to-date bowling centres in the UK and a large jungle-inspired indoor play area. In over thirty years its popularity has only grown, attracting around 600,000 visitors per year. In an exciting new development for the centre, the council has invested in a high-quality LED installation and smart lighting controls as well as upgrading its interactive bowling software to the innovative BES X system. The latest additions have come following a line of renovations that have set the 30- lane bowling centre above the competition, allowing it to host prestigious events such as the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship with over 15 countries taking part. The tenpin bowling alley also boasts the highly popular glow-in-the-dark Xtreme Bowling sessions in 2004, which have helped increase revenue for the council. Over the years, accessing funding for refurbishments has not been easy for the council. With capital finally acquired, it was imperative that every pound was to be used to maximum effect, ensuring value, quality and reliability whilst being as environmentally sustainable as possible. Appointed building consultants LDD of Belfast approached Dextra Lighting to manufacture and deliver a complete lighting upgrade for the premises. Dextra s team was also required to install and commission a state-of-the-art lighting control system to support a wide variety of functions and leisure activities. (+44)

3 THE BRIEF The leisure facility s existing fluorescent lighting hadn t been updated for years and was significantly underperforming. Uneven light coverage, unwanted shadowing, and below average illuminance levels were caused by depreciated light sources and deteriorating optics. The system was also inefficient, costing the council a hefty electrical bill despite the poor performance. buildings carbon emissions, the LED system will also allow the council to benefit from the financial benefits of an improved CRC (Carbon Reduction Commitment) performance whilst setting an example for sustainable practice. All emergency lighting was to be replaced throughout the premises in accordance to statutory safety regulations. Dextra Lighting was required to supply and install an energyefficient and low-maintenance LED system to replace the existing fluorescent fittings in the ten pin bowling lanes and Indiana Land indoor play area. A sophisticated, yet userfriendly digital control system was to be incorporated into the new design - allowing staff to adjust the lighting to create a fun and exciting bowling, skating and climbing experience and host private functions and events. To save the council money, ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme) compliant luminaries were selected for the project. Easy-install fittings and control gear was also chosen to minimise the time and cost of installation. By reducing the (+44)

4 THE PRODUCTS X-Treme Bowling & Kids Play Area - Ecopack LED For the 30-lane bowling alley, a versatile lighting solution was required to support competitive league games, DJ entertainment with disco lighting and UV glow-in-the-dark sessions. The Ecopack LED was chosen to illuminate the bowling lanes, with its matching footprint to typical T8 fluorescent battens offering quick and easy replacement of the previous fittings. The Ecopack diffusers and general positioning provide wellbalanced illumination, by minimising any glare that could impede the visibility of bowlers approaching the lanes or using the interactive screens. By positioning the luminaires at an angle, interfering reflectances on the waxy surface were also prevented. For the Indiana Land play area, the Ecopack LED was mounted on to the existing trunking system, brightening up the area with a visually comfortable 4000k cool-white light. Runway Surface/Suspended & Ecopack LED To offer safe, effective and engaging illumination, the design incorporated different types of dimmable fittings, which were either retrofitted or newly installed. The aim was to significantly reduce the running costs compared to the existing HID/ fluorescent lighting whilst improving overall light levels either through one-to-one replacements in certain locations, reduction of fittings in others and adding luminaries in areas that were not adequately lit. The Runway Surface LED was mounted in rows on to the existing trunking system to act as primary lighting directly above the main alley area. The Ecopack LED was used to help maintain the overall lux levels throughout the arena, including the spectator seats, clip n climb wall and surrounding circulation areas. Luminaires were provided with DALI dimmable Philips drivers to offer centralised digital dimming control to support a usual recreational purposes, exciting lighting displays and international level competitions. Reception, Circulation & Seating Areas - Rubix & Protec LED The Rubix LED welcomed visitors with a fresh, unique contemporary look and feel paired with up-to-date functionality and performance with nine individual cells with precise optical control and an additional surround diffuser with back-lit halo Due to its premium performance, versatility and attractive contemporary design, the Protec LED was used in various locations for different purposes. Controls The majority of the luminaries used in this project were installed with high-performance DALI dimmable Philips drivers. The luminaires are now linked to a centralised DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) network which can now be programmed, monitored and controlled via user-friendly digital interfaces and modular switch panels situated around the premises. DALI routers were used to control the output in each area, dividing the installation into separate zones or sections. Dextra Lighting s team commissioned the project and staff can now select the appropriate lighting scene for each occasion. The installation team programmed the parameters for each lighting scene so that users can easily and independently change between modes as and when required. Having been given a thorough induction into how to operate the lighting, staff have complete ownership over the new lighting system and will not need to incur further technical call-out costs for re-programming. In the bowling alley, luminaires above individual lanes can be switched on or off independently to save energy when lanes are vacated and signal which ones are in use. The entire system can also be dimmed from an off position for glow-in-the-dark sessions or when activating coloured disco lighting, to a 100% output to provide high visibility during competitions. To provide maximum flexibility of control, entire rows of luminaries and the perimeter lighting can all be individually dimmed to provide different lighting combinations for weekday or weekend recreational activities, clip n climb sessions, shows, competitions or other special events that incorporate coloured lighting effects. To simplify matters, light configurations and parameters for each activity were programmed as a pre-set scenes that staff can easily change with a flick of a switch or set on a timer to activate at a specific hour during the day.
