9 Combined BW Tanks BW Tanks/Grey/Treated waste water Some port states will not accept the use of such connections Not in contradiction with MARPOL Annex IV - may be in conflict with the BWM Convention Combined ballast and treated sewage tanks are not recommended Accepted through non-permanent connections (spool piece) Change over procedure - flushing two times the ballast tanks before ballasting begins This requirement is applicable until Convention decides otherwise. 11

10 TRC and Pump capacity When the BWTS installed has a treatment rate capacity (TRC) < ballast pump capacity. According to the DNV GL rules (Pt. 6 Ch. 7 Sec. 1, Ch ) flow control measures shall be installed A warning shall be given if the pump runs at a higher capacity than TRC The warning shall turn into an alarm if the high flow rate above the TRC continues If the BWM system is designed to be used with one ballast pump only - specified in the BWM plan 12

12 Tanker for liquefied gas - example As long as the treatment system does not decreases the safety it can be accepted in the engine room similar as the ballast pumps The BW treatment system is not to be connected to any other system or have opening in the engine room IGC Code Ch and New IGC Code Ch

13 Retrofit lessons learned Retrofits are more complex than new-build installation bypasses of BWTS, gravity filling/discharge space Short time window (during docking), needs very good planning Installation needs approval by class (update of all drawings and stability calculations) Increased power requirement installation of generators Increased head loss in piping system lower ballasting rate 15

14 Challenges we often see- electrolysis Pump room E/R connections De-gas vent routing and discharge to open deck TRO sensor discharge to bilge not accepted Plastic piping without fire endurance certificates metallic valves isolating BWTS Neutralizer tanks without drip trays 16

15 Recommendations by Class When selecting a system request the TA C and acceptance of the flag Use the BWTS on regular basis Requirement for the Class Notation and SoC Use the BWTS according to the O&M Manual If BWMS produced hazardous gas as a by-product - DNV GL type approved system (for more smooth installations, compliance with DNV GL Pt.6 ch.7) 17
