5 To promote Consistency in the interpretation of codes & regulations 7 To promote Quality Design & Construction to reduce the loss of life and property and to design high performance educational facilities 8

6 DSA reviews 3,800 projects each year for code compliance in the fields of Structural, Accessibility, and Fire & Life Safety. 9 That s about 316 projects reviewed per month, or 79 projects each week, being reviewed by DSA for compliance with California codes and regulations regarding Structural, Accessibility and Fire & Life Safety. 10

7 In addition to DSA, there are many other stakeholders: project developers, designers, construction managers, school district staff, and others. 11 So, WHY is an Academy needed? 12

10 After so many years, we sometimes forget why DSA was given the responsibility for ensuring structural safety in California s schools. Let me remind you March 10, 1933 The Long Beach Earthquake hit at 5:55 pm Estimated magnitude:

11 (place photo here) Jefferson Junior High School 70 schools were destroyed. 120 schools suffered major damage Had the earthquake hit during school hours, the loss of life could have been staggering. 20

13 Exactly one month after the earthquake, the Field Act was passed, giving California s Division of the State Architect responsibility for reviewing school plans and overseeing construction of all public schools. 23 Since then, there have been no injuries or deaths due to structural failure, from an earthquake in a building certified under the authority of the Field Act. 24

14 What Classes are Available through the Academy? Current Academy Class 2007 CBC Amendments - Structural this one-day class, orients participants to the 2007 Triennial California Building Standards Code (Title 24) as adopted by DSA Structural Safety. Highlighting new amendments to Part California Building Code (CBC), and provides an overview of revisions to amendments contained in the 2001 CBC. The course emphasizes the format and organization of model code provisions and structural safety amendments applicable to public schools. 26
