1 Passive Infrared Motion Detector Installation Instructions 5420/90P The 5420/90P Passive Infrared Motion Detector provides reliable, high performance detection at an affordable price. The Detector features a dense, wide angle lens, high RF, ESD and white light immunity, auto temperature compensation, look down creep zone, adjustable pulse count and range setting. The adjustable easy-slide mounting height selector makes installation a breeze. The Detector is compact, attractive and easy to install. It can be mounted indoors on a wall or in a corner and is ideal for commercial, retail, office and residential applications. 3 MOUNTING LOCATION The 5420/90P Motion Detector is for indoor use only. The unit can be mounted on a wall or in a corner. The recommended mounting height for the Detector is 2.1 m. You can install the unit at heights between 1.1 m and 3.1 m. Ensure that the detector has a clear line of sight over the entire area to be protected. Infrared light does not pass through solid objects. Mount the detector in a location where an intruder is most likely to walk across the Detector pattern (side to side). When mounting the unit in a corner, the wide angle lens is recommended. The look down zone makes this an ideal Detector for installation above a doorway, window or over a stairwell. Do not mount the unit where it will be exposed to direct sunlight, heating or cooling sources or high humidity areas that may cause condensation on the lens. INSTALLATION 1. Open the Detector Housing Unclip the bottom of the lid and swing it open. If the Detector has been previously installed, check that the fixing screw is not securing the lid. While the cover is off, do not touch the pyroelectric element or circuit board components with you fingers or with tools. Handle the circuit board by the edges only. 2. Remove the Circuit Board (optional) Slide the circuit board up until the keyhole clears the retaining post. Pull the circuit board forward from the top until it clears the retaining post. Slide the board up until it clears the bottom hooks. 3. Mount the Base The base can be corner or flat surface mounted. Drill the holes as required for the mounting screws and cable. Insert the cable through the cable hole. Mount the base securely. Seal any open holes with flexible sealant, e.g. Silicone. Replace the circuit board, making sure to match the height markings on the circuit board and the pointer in the base to the finished mounted detector height. The board will slide up and down without any need for screw adjustment. 3

4 4. Wire the Detector Using the appropriate stranded cable, wire the Detector as shown. Use only a regulated DC power supply from 9 to 15 Volts. Both the Tamper and Alarm contacts are normally closed in the non-alarm state. 5. Reassemble the Lid Snap the lid back on. If a screw-secured lid is required, use the screw supplied, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Cover the screw with the screw cap provided. WALK TESTING 1. Set the Range and Pulse links according to your application (See Options settings), the factory settings are Low Range, 3-4 Pulse count (low sensitivity), LED enabled. 2. Ensure that the mounting height adjustment is set correctly. 3. Replace the cover. 4. Apply power and wait for the LED to extinguish (approx. 30 seconds), 5. Conduct a walk test by slowly walking across the protected area and observing the LED. An alarm should occur at the maximum of 3 to 4 normal walking steps, 12 m from the detector. 6. Stop and wait for the alarm LED to extinguish before you continue walk testing. Continuous motion in the protected area will keep the alarm LED on constantly. 7. Observing the LED for pre-alarm pulses will take the guesswork out of the detection coverage. Short LED pulses indicate detection of infrared below the alarm threshold level. The number of pulses to cause an alarm can be set by the Pulse link, LK2. 8. Adjust your Range and Pulse links to suit your installation. Always use the lowest Range and highest Pulse Count that will guarantee good coverage. This will help to minimise the possibility of false alarms. 4

5 9. You may wish to reduce the range to avoid a heat source by changing the angle of detection. One way to achieve this is to slide the circuit board up thus setting the height adjustment to a higher setting than the actual mounting height. By sliding the circuit board up or down you change the angle of detection. Pulse count is a means of adjusting the number of pulses received (therefore the number of steps) before an alarm is generated. The Range link is a means of setting the level of infrared required to generate a pulse from the Detector; this in turn directly affects the range of the Detector. The correct setting will depend upon the size of the area protected. The Range link should always be set to the lowest setting that will still provide good coverage. LENS ARRAY The detection pattern can be altered to suit your application by changing the lens; 3 lens types are available: Wide Angle 15 m x 15 m, 90 degrees (standard as supplied) Long Range 30 m by 13 degrees Curtain Barrier 15 m by 5 degrees x solid barrier 5

6 To change lenses: 1. Hold the retainer firmly on the sides, squeezing it to disengage. Carefully, remove it from the cover. 2. Remove the lens. 3. Replace the lens with a new one ensuring the smooth side of the lens is facing out and the wiring is the correct way up. 4. Reassemble the Detector by reversing the removal steps. 8 5) This warranty is expressly subject to the Clipsal Integrated Systems Product being installed, wired, tested, operated and used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. 6) All costs of a claim shall be met by Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd, however should the product that is the subject of the claim be found to be in good working order, all such costs shall be met by the claimant. 7) When making a claim, the consumer shall forward the Clipsal Integrated Systems Product to the nearest office of Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd with adequate particulars of the defect within 28 days of the fault occurring. The product should be returned securely packed, complete with details of the date and place of purchase, description of load, and circumstances of malfunction.
