3 APPLICATION NOTE University of Economics in Buildings monitoring Building management requires installation of many complex systems that control various aspects of its operation. While some of these systems are mandatory, such as the fire protection,, others are recommended, for example by the insurer, and some additional enhance security and allow monitoring people inside the building. Thus a situation arises where a property manager must use multiple independent systems, leading to excessive complexity of maintenance and managent actions and the risk that important information may be overlooked. History of BMS project at the University of Economics In 2003, ASKOM provided a climate control system for the main lecture halls of the building A at the University of Economics in. In its object-oriented layer the system is based on Simatic S7 controllers from Siemens, and SCADA application was implemented in the parent layer based on Asix TM system, produced by ASKOM. With the comprehensive vision of the building surveillance system, the university authorities did not stop at this partial application. Beginning in 2005 further stages of University buildings management system development were carried out, including taking over control by the ASIX application of heating node, room access, fire protection system and CCTV system. All these functions were integrated in one application operating in the building supervisor room, offering quick access to control functions of the relevant systems, archiving of events in a uniform alarm system, allowing parametrization of the selected system features. System Structure BMS at the University of Economics in consists of a computer running the ASIX application, measurement and control data sources, and computer terminal that allows system administrator remotely access and parametrize the application without interrupting the building supervisor's work (application user). 4 University of Economics in APPLICATION NOTE ASIX application server is connected to two networks - the technical network in which signals are transmitted between the controllers, control units and other data sources and to the administrative network, through which data is exchanged with ASIX application terminal located in another building and which allows remote system control and parametrization. Separation of these two networks increases technical network security and guarantees collecting of relevant data and sending it to the necessary controls. Heating, air conditioning and ventilation Climate and ventilation control system based on Simatic S7 controllers allows remote control and parametrization of the central heating system as well as schedule the operation of lecture halls heating and ventilation systems. Communication of the ASIX applications with S7 controllers is carried out using the SAPI S7 protocol through Ethernet connection. Heating node control was achieved based on a SAIA PCD2 controller, linked to the application over an Ethernet network via SBus protocol over TCP / IP. Remote access to the central heating and ventilation system parameters allows changing the pre-set heating node parameters. Creating building heating schedules including days off is also possible. Integrated application, including the climate and ventilation control system allows for optimal control and thus the economical energy use. It is also possible to remotely tune the automatic control systems, which in conjunction with flexible analogue data archiving and visualisation tools, offers a precise engineering tool for the selection of the adjustment parameters. Access Control and Authentication Building and people safety makes it necessary to monitor people present inside and limiting their access to individual rooms. For this purpose, various kinds of systems monitoring the presence of persons on the premises, the door status and access authorization systems are implemented. At the University of Economics, the presence of people in various areas is monitored by the Sintony alert system, which provides information to the ASIX application through COM serial port using a specialized communication driver. The status of all presence sensors is continuously visualised on the computer screen, offering to the building supervisor an information about the presence of staff and students in the University halls. The use of automatic locks with electronic card readers, that read cards individually assigned to employees, allows the Prox Net system to continuously monitor doors lock status and collect information about who opened and closed them. The data collected by Prox Net database are periodically transferred to the ASIX building surveillance application. One mouse click allows the user to access information on the status of each automatic lock. It is also possible to monitor the lock status of individual protection zones. page 2 FEBRUARY 2011

5 APPLICATION NOTE University of Economics in Fire protection system Fire protection system is a particularly important element of the building security system. It is mandatory in public buildings. At the University of Economics the fire protection system is based on a Polon control station with a network of sensors. This is the standard solution. However, it has a fundamental flaw: alarm messages are displayed on the screen, printed on a paper tape and an audible alarm is sounded. Locating the point of danger indicated by the control unit, requires staff to have a good knowledge of the building and quickly associate a name of the alarm point with a particular room. Taking over of the alarm signals by the ASIX application offers the operator a much clearer picture of the threat - the alarm message appears on the screen as well as image of the building with graphics showing its location on the corresponding floor. Such information is very clear, even for newly employed staff. Fire protection system alarm information, as well as other ASIX application events are archived on the computer disk and can be easily viewed and sorted according to various criteria. It is much easier than reading records from a paper tape. Moreover, such an archive is easier to store than papers. CCTV cameras Using the Panasonic CCTV cameras - the building monitoring system- integrated with the BMS application makes it easy to monitor the building - any alarms are displayed on the computer screen, so they get immediately noticed by the supervising staff. The system consists of dozens of CCTV cameras placed in the security sensitive locations. ASIX acquires the alarm information along with the identifier of the camera which detected an alarm. This allows to switch the screen to image captured by this camera. It should be noted that finding the correct camera is thus very fast. As the standard application event, camera alarm is stored in a list of events, which allows for subsequent ex post analysis of the situation and comparison with other alarm information. Energy consumption Because the ASIX application is a full-blooded SCADA system, so accounting of energy use and tracking does not present any problem. Access to meter data allows continuous monitoring of energy consumption, allows for the optimization and forecasting. It also allows the calculation of expected energy bills. Supervision of the application The ASIX application is a powerful building monitoring and control tool ( BMS ). It is thus necessary to ensure an adequate authorization access to the system functions. ASIX system tools allow the user to precisely define the access privileges to control, modify and maintain the application. Login system for users with the appropriate privileges ensures clear separation of functions for each user. Any user login is recorded in the event list, so then it is possible to determinewho (by name) was logged in when the parameters or application itself were modified. FEBRUARY 2011 page 3

6 University of Economics in Conclusion APPLICATION NOTE The uniform combining of information from different sources within a single ASIX BMS application greatly facilitates the building management at the University of Economics in. Standardising the way information is provided to the operator and archiving all events in one system allows quick and easy analysis of the current and historical records making supervision tasks simpler and faster. page 4 FEBRUARY 2011
