3 Instructions for Use: The Performance Based Skill Assessment Evaluation is designed to standardize conditions under which the candidate demonstrates performance of tasks to meet the requirements for NPGA CETP Certification. The Skills Assessment should be supplemented with company policies and procedures related to each task being evaluated as needed. 1. The candidate has 12 months from the date of successfully passing the CETP Certification exam to train and successfully complete the tasks within the evaluation. 2. The Affidavits and Final Checklist are found on the last pages of the skills packet. Affidavits must be signed by both the candidate and the skill evaluator The Final Checklist must be fully completed within 12 months of passing the exam (Candidates have time to practice skills they are not yet familiar with) Make a copy for the training records for future audits when the skills assessment is completed Send the last pages of skills assessment (Affidavit page and Final Checklist) to the testing center within 12 months of passing the exam 3. All requirements and prerequisites must be met before certification will be granted. 4 Instructions for Candidate: Practice the operations as many times as needed to become confident and proficient with the documents or equipment necessary to complete each task. Your evaluator will check and observe your performance, using the steps to complete each hands-on operation and/or company procedures. The candidate must adhere to all safety precautions. If a safety precaution is violated, then the demonstration shall be stopped and the skills evaluator must instruct the candidate on the proper safety procedures that apply before allowing the candidate to continue. After completing the skills evaluation, the candidate must fill out the Employee Information section and sign the Affidavit. Required information includes the candidate s last four digits of the SSN to assist the testing center in locating the correct records. Instructions to the Skills Evaluator: The candidate must adhere to all safety precautions. If a safety precaution is violated, then the demonstration shall be stopped and the skills evaluator must instruct the candidate on the proper safety procedures that apply before allowing the candidate to continue. Review the tasks within the Skills Evaluation with the candidate. Review all of the instructions, answering any questions and explaining how the skills assessment will be used. Demonstrate and/or talk the candidate through each of the steps required to perform each task. Allow the candidate time to ask questions and/or study the steps. Observe the candidate performing the required steps, providing corrections as needed Allow the candidate to practice until he/she is confident. Remember: the candidate has 12 months from the date of passing the exam to complete and return the skills assessment Evaluate the candidate when ready. After completing the final checklist, complete the Skills Evaluator information and sign the affidavit. Ensure that the Affidavit and final Checklist are copied for the Employee Training Records and then sent to the testing center. Each task is divided into one or more operations upon which the candidate s performance is evaluated. All tasks must be completed unless the Not Applicable option is both available for the task and applicable to the candidate. - When all the operations within a task are successfully performed by the candidate according the criteria provided, the evaluator will check off the box marked Satisfactory. * Not Applicable Certain tasks have the Not Applicable option available. Listened to a description of the problem as given by the customer or the skills evaluator, and wrote the symptoms provided on a service work order or other appropriate company service form. 2. Examined the appliance components and circuit diagrams and explained the following in regards to the appliance problems: Why each appliance part was being checked and what the candidate was looking for. Which components or circuits might be the cause of the problem and why. Explained how the circuits and components should act under electricity and what testing steps would isolate the problem. Task 2: Use a Circuit Diagram to Explain Appliance Circuit Components Performance Guide: At a customer location, training facility or company shop and using a circuit diagram for the appliance, the person being evaluated: 1. Located and identified an electrical circuit. 2. Identified and explained the nature of each circuit component. Task 3: Use a Circuit Diagram to Identify Circuit Types and the Voltage Present when Electricity is Applied Performance Guide: At a customer location, training facility or company shop and using a circuit diagram for the appliance, the person being evaluated: 1. Identified electrical circuit types (both series and parallel) and how the circuit components work in a normally operating appliance. 2. 6 Section Two: Measure Electrical Quantities Task 1: Demonstrate and Explain Safety Guidelines to Apply When Using an Electrical Test Meter 1. Correctly identified the various types of electrical test meters and the corresponding measuring capabilities. 2. Correctly identified the maximum voltage rating for the electrical test meter leads and probes. 3. Examined the meter and leads to determine safe operation for making appliance circuit electrical measurements and verified proper operation by adjustment of scale. 4. WITHOUT attaching the meter leads to an electric circuit, correctly set the meter function switch (& scale switch if applicable), plugged in the test leads and measured circuit continuity, voltage, electrical current and component resistance. 5. Correctly demonstrated and explained the following meter safety precautions: Safe handling of the test meter Protective gear used when working on live circuits Removal of electrically conductive jewelry Company meter safety policies and procedures Safe handling of lead attachment to circuits Task 2: Measure Voltage between Two Given Points in an Electrical Circuit 1. Correctly connected a multimeter into an electrical circuit, energized the circuit, and properly measured the voltage between specified points in the circuit. 2. Correctly explained the following: How the voltage measurement is related to determining proper operation of circuit components. How voltage measurements are used to diagnose appliance problems. Task 3: Measure Resistance between Two Given Points in an Electrical Circuit 1. Demonstrated how to verify the fundamental electrical circuit condition that must be present before and during electrical resistance measurement, and explained how such measurements are used in diagnosing appliance problems. 2. Connected a multimeter into a de-energized electrical circuit, and correctly measured the resistance between the specified points in the circuit. 3. Correctly identified an appliance electrical system component that must never be connected to an ohmmeter or multimeter set for resistance measurement. Task 4: Measure Current between Two Given Points in an Electrical Circuit 1. Connected a multimeter into an electrical circuit or connected a clamp type meter. 2. Energized the circuit and correctly measured the current between specific points in the circuit. 3. Identified a circuit load in appliances and bulk plant equipment that is frequently checked before and after it is energized for rated current flow to verify proper operating condition. 7 Section Three: Identify the Operating Characteristics and Components of Common Sensing Devices Task 1: Identify and Explain the Operating Characteristics of Common Sensing Devices Performance Guide: At a customer location, training facility or company shop and using a circuit diagram for the appliance, the person being evaluated: 1. Identified and explained the function of each sensing component on an appliance circuit diagram. 2. Correctly explained what each device senses. Task 2: Identify and Explain the Operating Characteristics of Electronic Ignition Systems Performance Guide: At a customer location, training facility or company shop and using the circuit diagram for the appliance, the person being evaluated: 1. Identified and explained the function of each device listed for the electronic ignition and safety control system. Task 3: Verify Proper Location and Operation of a Wall-Mounted Thermostat 1. Located and correctly identified a wall-mounted thermostat and: Determined if the wall-mounted thermostat was properly located Explained the purpose of a heat anticipator setting and determined if it was properly functioning. Task 4: Locate and Identify the Type of Limit Control Used to Protect the Appliance 1. Located the appliance limit control and identified it as: Combination fan & Limit control Limit control only 2. Determined if the limit control was adjustable, and if adjustable, how the adjustment is properly made. 3. Identified the appliance component protected by the limit control and explained conditions that cause its operation Task 5: Identify and Explain the Operation of a Draft Fan Control 1. Located the draft fan control on the appliance circuit diagram. 2. Explained the operation of the draft fan control. 3. 8 Section Four: Identify the Operating Characteristics and Components of Common Sensing Devices Task 1: Demonstrate and Explain the Operation of Coils, Solenoids, Relays and Transformers 1. Identified a step down transformer on an appliance and circuit diagram and explained its function. 2. Identified the primary and secondary windings of a step down transformer and measured the voltage across each. 3. Measured and recorded the ohms resistance in the primary and secondary windings. 4. Identified and explained the operation of a solenoid activated device. 5. Identified and explained the operation of a relay and relay switched device. Task 2: Read and Explain Electrical Circuit Diagrams 1. Identified and explained the uses of a ladder circuit diagram and a component connection circuit, indicating the role of each wire. 2. Traced the flow of electricity through the component connection circuit diagram. 3. Explained the operation of controls and load devices as electricity is introduced into the circuit.
