5 FireClass Fire Alarm Control Panels 1 Introduction 1 Introduction 1.1 About this Guide This guide is intended to provide useful information to anyone planning to implement a network of FireClass technology fire alarm control panels, or networking existing installed panels. The information is applicable to networks using the TLI800EN network interface module. There is also an installation guide to the TLI800EN module. document TLI800EN Network Module Fixing Instructions. Refer to this guide for details of pin-outs, jumper settings etc. The term FireClass Networking refers to the technology that allows FireClass technology fire alarm control panels to be combined into networks. FireClass Networking is peerto-peer based, robust, fault resilient and flexible. 1.2 What Types of Control Panel can be Networked Basically, FireClass networking can network together any FireClass addressable control panel using the FireClass Speak protocol. You need to configure the networking using FireClass Express. There you are given a list of compatible control panel types to choose from. 1.3 Key Features The key features of FireClass Networking are as follows: Up to 24 FireClass control panels on a network. This provides support for up to addressable points, 5000 Zones, and over 25,000 digital I/O points. Full stand alone capability is retained for each control panel. True Peer-to-Peer communications. There are no slave or master devices. Comprehensive fault and error handling: Automatic error and fault detection and recovery. Nodes can fail without affecting the remainder of network. Open and short circuits are detected and the location identified. Maintenance of ring integrity. Groups of nodes isolated due to circuit faults continue to communicate within the group. Faults may break the network into smaller sections. In this case there is automatic re-configuration to maintain communications within each section. Normal operation is automatically restored when the fault clears. An Optional Emergency Alarm link is provided. This provides the minimum required fire response (general fire indication, source panel identification and alarm relay activation) at a designated master panel in the event of a system fault at any non-master panel connected to the network. It requires additional connections between the TLI800EN and the panels Field Interface Module (FIM). The Optional Emergency Display is an additional LED based indicator board local to the master panel which provides a general fire indication for each panel connected to the network. This provides basic fire indications in the event of a system fault on the master panel. Additional MPM800 and ANN840 boards are required which are driven directly from the TLI800EN. Nodes with backup microprocessor for alarm signals in degraded mode (system fault) automatically disconnect from the network at loss of power. Auxiliary connections provided by the TLI800EN. These include emergency alarm signals and an emergency display connection. A variety of network cable options include the following: Shielded twisted pair. Unshielded twisted pair (in dedicated trunking). Mixed cable types are possible within a network. The protocol is token passing, non-collision (deterministic). Simple to fit to already installed FireClass panels. Automatic re-configuration when nodes are added or removed. Messaging protocol details: Half-duplex token passing. Baud rates from 19,200 to 115,200 are supported. The baud rate can be configured in the field. Asynchronous operation. One start bit, one stop bit, eight data bits, no parity. Network traffic is regenerated as clean data at each TLI800EN. This increases the maximum distance between nodes. This also isolates signalling circuits, providing short or open circuit tolerance. Data regeneration within each node with a typical delay of 0.5 bit time. Product Application and Design Information Doc. version 1 5

7 FireClass Fire Alarm Control Panels 2 Hardware and Protocol 2 Hardware and Protocol FireClass Networking supports a variety of cable types and circuit topologies. This flexibility means that the network can be applied to most existing layouts and wiring schemes. 2.1 Messaging Frames and Tokens FireClass Networking follows a token ring protocol. Each control panel has an identifying address. This is a number in the range 1 and 24. The addresses may be allocated in any sequence, it is independent of the neighbouring address. Messages are transmitted as frames. Frames contain the following message items: The destination address. The source address. The message content. Error checking information. Frame transmission must be controlled to avoid collisions otherwise transmission would be unreliable and inefficient. To do this a special message called a token is used. The token is passed round to visit each node on the network. A node can only transmit if the token destination address matches its address. If a node does not need to transmit it passes the next token. Once the transmitting node detects its own message, this confirms the message has traversed the network successfully, so it passes the next token. 2.2 Link Failure Tolerance The links between nodes may fail, due to a short circuit in the connecting cable, for example. The results are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.. Fig. 1: Single Break All nodes communicate as normal Fig. 2: Multiple Break Nodes within the isolated groups communicate with each other 2.3 Cabling Copper cabling can only be used for the network. Details of cable lengths are provided below. As a quick summary the maximum distance between nodes is: 3000 m using shielded twisted pair cable m using TYCO (Pyrotenax) standard MICC (xlx) fire survival cable. Product Application and Design Information Doc. version 1 7
8 2.3 Cabling FireClass Fire Alarm Control Panels Copper Cabling The relationship between baud rate, maximum distance between nodes and cable type is shown in Table 3 on page 9. (To repeat, this is for networks using TLI800EN modules.) As a summary Table 2 shows the relationship between cable capacitance and maximum baud rate. Baud rate Capacitance nf nf nf nf nf nf NOTICE Non EN 54 part 4 powered Network Nodes. In a Bus topology network when a node is used for a host that is not EN approved, then the combined twisted pair cable distance (sum of both distances to the right node and to the left node), that will separate neighbouring FC controllers when the power to the node in the middle is turned off, must not exceed the value listed in Table 3 on page 9. Table 3 shows the maximum cable lengths. Table 2: TLI800EN, Cable parameters, approximate maximum wire-to-wire capacitance Maximum resistance = 40 Ohm for EN54-13 compliant installation. Maximum resistance = 65 Ohm for proper function without compliance.(all baud rates) 8 Product Application and Design Information Doc. version 1

12 3 Control Panel Interaction over the Network FireClass Fire Alarm Control Panels 3 Control Panel Interaction over the Network 3.1 Cause/Effect Processing Over the Network Each control panel in a network maintains full stand-alone capability as well as interacting with the network. Over the network control panels exchange event information. Control panels use their cause/effect processing for these events (as well as their own events). Causes on any panel in the network can be programmed to trigger any effect on any panel connected to the network. The common causes and effects implement such functions as common alarm signalling, common fault signalling, resetting, and silencing. Configuring panels for networking is supported by Fire- Class Express. The templates provide pre-defined causes and effects that will be common between the networked panels. 3.2 Remote Event Display Control panels can automatically display events received from other panels on the network. The following event information is displayed: The identify of the originating panel. The event type (such as Fire Alarm, Fault, Clear, etc.). The identity of the originating point. The identity of the zone of the originating point. 3.3 Operator Stations All events are logged at the respective panels and the user can view and print the logged events. 3.4 Supervision One FireClass panel can be designated to perform network supervision. The designated Supervisor continuously attempts to communicate with all other control panels. Any failure in communications is flagged as a fault. 3.5 Time/Date Synchronisation One FireClass panel can be a designated time keeper, performing time and date sychronisation. When the time and date of the time keeper is changed, the new setting is sent over the network to synchronise the other panels. There is also a regular scheduled synchronisation, every hour. Note that FireClass Graphics can be designated as a supervisor and/or a time keeper. 12 Product Application and Design Information Doc. version 1
