5 Chapter 1: Description of functions Overview Introduction This chapter describes the underlying physical principles. Chapter contents In this chapter you will find the following information: Subject See page Physical principles 1-2 Determination of influence values 1-4 SHB_M17 Chapter 1: Description of functions 1-1

6 Physical principles Measurement principle Oxygen is highly paramagnetic and this differentiates it from nearly all other gases. The molar susceptibility of a paramagnetic gas is temperature-dependent. It is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature. This fact, and the property of paramagnetic substances to be drawn to areas of higher field strength in a non-homogeneous magnetic field, form the basis for O 2 measurements. The sample gas is brought into the field of a strong permanent magnet. If the sample gas contains oxygen it is drawn to areas of higher magnetic field strength. At this point in the magnetic field there is an electrically heated wire, the measuring resistor, that warms the surrounding sample gas. Warming decreases the paramagnetism of the sample gas so that the sample gas is forced out of the magnetic field and colder gas can flow in after it. This forms a flow pattern known as "magnetic wind". The measurement resistance is highly temperature-dependent and changes according to the flow rate of the magnetic wind. A reference resistance is found in the other half of the chamber which is not in the magnetic field. The ratio between the sample and reference resistance depends on the strength of the magnetic wind, i.e. on the concentration of oxygen in the sample gas. The measurement and reference resistance values are connected to a Wheatstone measuring bridge via two temperature-independent resistors. Compensating the Wheatstone bridge by means of the temperature-independent resistors leads to an unbalance voltage that is digitized and linearized in the downstream electronic circuits and is then available as a measurement signal. 7 Physical principles, Continued Signal processing The sample chamber measurement signal (unbalance voltage) is passed to the sensor electronics board and digitized there by an A/D converter. The digitized measurement signal is passed to the Sensor-CPU board for processing with the data contained in the EEPROM. The measurement value can be recorded or processed further (e.g. as an ma signal in the central processor electronics) via an RS232 interface or via the internal bus. SHB_M17 Chapter 1: Description of functions 1-3

8 Determination of influence values Temperature The analyzer is located in a thermostatically controlled chamber at a constant temperature of 61 ±2 C. The temperature sensor is on the support board and reads the chamber temperature. The temperature sensor is an NTC resistor. Any thermostat temperature deviation from the set temperature is processed as a status message. The temperature control circuit is on the Sensor-CPU board. Flow rate The flow rate through the sample chamber should be approx l/h. It can be monitored, e.g. by a flow rate sensor, in the pneumatics module for example. Flow Rate Monitoring The composition of the accompanying gas must be known and taken into consideration during initial calibration. 1-4 Chapter 1: Description of functions SHB_M17
