2 ABOUT THE COMMUNITY Provo is the third largest city in Utah with a population of 5,000. Located about 43 miles south of Salt Lake City along the scenic Wasatch Front, Provo is the seat of Utah County. The City is bordered on the east by the majestic Wasatch Mountains and on the west by serene Utah Lake. Although covering 44 square miles, the City has successfully maintained a small town feel with tree lined streets and historic neighborhoods. Provo is the home of Brigham Young University (BYU), one of the largest private higher education institutions in the United States. Established in 875, BYU has a student enrollment of 33,000, and creates a diverse environment for the community by offering a number of amenities to Provo residents, including museums, cultural performance centers, and sporting events. Provo is the second largest metro area in the state and is a focus area for technology development in Utah and is a key operational center for Novell, NuSkin Interational, Intermountain Healthcare, Morinda, and Ancestry.com. The City is also home to a thriving entrepreneurial community and several business and industrial parks. The municipal airport recently added commercial service along with its general aviation service. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your time in Provo, including easy access to Provo Canyon, Utah Lake, and City and state parks. 3 PROVO FIRE AND RESCUE ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Provo Fire & Rescue has provided fire protection and emergency response since 890, and today is a modern, professional, all-hazards response organization. Provo Fire & Rescue provides a variety of emergency and non-emergency services, including fire, paramedic transport, hazardous materials, rescue, fire prevention services, and public education. The men and women of Provo Fire & Rescue are highly-trained professionals and are proud to serve the citizens. Their mission is to provide professional quality service with dedication and pride. The executive branch of the government consists of a full-time Mayor, Chief Administrative Officer, and the administrative departments and officers. The legislative branch of the government consists of the Municipal Council, having seven (7) members. The Mayor and Council Members are elected positions with four (4) year terms of office. Provo City has,400 employees and an annual budget of $97.9 million. City departments include: Administrative Services, Community Development, Energy, Fire, Legal, Library, Mayor s Office, Parks and Recreation, Police, Public Works, and Redevelopment. The Fire Chief reports to the Mayor. CANDIDATE PROFILE The successful candidate will bring a solid background in management in fire and emergency services, a high degree of ethics and integrity, an ability to relate effectively with professional firefighters, department staff, other city leaders, elected officials and the public, and a strong commitment to maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Provo. The candidate will also have strong communication skills, a personality which engenders confidence and trust, and a clear sense of direction as to what needs to be done to take a very effective department to even greater levels of accomplishment.

4 KEY EXPECTATIONS IN FIRST YEAR The new fire chief in Provo will be asked to work closely with department staff and professionals to continue a focus on effective emergency response, fire prevention and education, and emergency management. A major focus in the coming year will be on improving and streamlining development review in coordination with other city departments involved in the process. The chief will be asked to develop plans to help further current efforts at professional development and succession planning in the department and to develop and support continuing training efforts. Emergency management will continue to be an important priority of the new chief and efforts to expand public education and to refine the city s emergency plans and training of key staff will be part of the new chief s focus in the first year. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field; and five (5) years of fire command experience, providing a comprehensive range of fire safety, urgent rescue, emergency management, and emergency medical services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience [substituting each one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience]. Experience in budget management, fire program planning, community relations, and workforce management is required along with a lawful Utah driver s license. The following certifications are suggested in order to effectively perform at this level: State of Utah certification as a Fire Officer II and Fire Instructor II (or equivalent); CPR certification and an advanced first-aid card. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Salary is negotiable depending upon qualifications within the range of $93,799 to $3,38 annually.
