2 DESCRIPTION EL7611A/EL7612A Ultrasonic Occupancy Sensors The EL7611A/EL7612A Ultrasonic Occupancy Sensors (Sensor) detect room occupancy using advanced omnidirectional ultrasonic Doppler technology (detection of slight changes in the reflected frequency and amplitude of the broadcast ultrasonic waves). When the Sensor detects movement in controlled areas, it turns on lighting systems through a Power Pack. The lights remain on as long as movement is sensed. When no movement is sensed during a user-adjustable period of time (15 seconds to 15 minutes), the Sensor switches off the lighting systems. MOUNTING SENSE SLOT (NOT SETTING SHOWN) (NOT SHOWN) MICROPHONE RECEIVER (NOT SHOWN) All Sensor controls are located on the side of the Sensor (Fig. 1): 1. Bypass Setting Overrides Sensor and sets to a permanent On position when override pin provided with the Sensor, is installed. 2. LED Indicator Blinks each time the Sensor triggers. 3. Sensitivity Adjustment Adjusts from zero (off) to ten (most sensitive). 4. Time Delay Keeps the lights on for a length of time after no motion has been detected. User-adjustable from 15 seconds to 15 minutes. The (Power Pack) contains a transformer and high-current relay. The transformer has a primary high voltage input and a secondary 12 Vdc, 100 ma output to power Sensors. The transformer is capable of switching an electrical load of up to 20 amps. The Power Pack can be used to control most lighting or HVAC loads in areas controlled by Sensors. The Power Pack can also operate as a 12 Vdc low voltage switching system. For example, Power Packs can control lighting circuits, self-contained air conditioners, pumps, fans, motors, VAV systems, motorized damper controls, setback thermostats, and other applications requiring high-voltage switching through low-voltage controls. The Power Packs can operate up to three Sensors. Linking Power Packs and Sensors allows implementing numerous configurations. The Power Packs can also operate other Honeywell occupancy sensors (for example, the EL7628A1007 Recessed Ceiling Sensor and the EL7680A1008 Wide-View Occupancy Sensor). Approvals: UL Listed. CSA Approved. INSTALLATION Placement EL7611A and EL7612A Ultrasonic Occupancy Sensors Use the following steps when determining Sensor placement: 1. Mount the Sensor on a rigid, vibration-free surface. 2. Observe the Sensor detecting motion made by humans and inanimate objects. 3. Mount the Sensor at least 8 ft (2.4m) from supply ducts and horizontal discharge ducts; the Sensor may falsetrigger in areas of high air volume flow. 4. Mount the Sensor up to 12 ft (3.7m) above the floor. The Sensor is a volumetric sensor and senses motion in a 360 pattern. Mounting the Sensor higher or lower than the recommended height decreases the coverage area. 5. Assure maximum Sensor coverage with a mounting height of 10 to 12 ft (3 to 3.7m). 6. Consider the extent of actual coverage area that is affected by room furnishings, upholstery, wall and floor coverings, height of partition walls, and size and speed of the object. 7. For applications where satisfactory operation is not achieved or greater reliability is required, apply multiple infrared and ultrasonic sensors on the same Power Pack. The Sensor uses two ultrasonic microphones to detect motion. Position the Sensor so that the microphones face the open area of the room. In an area that is completely enclosed by walls, place the Sensor so it can cover the entire space, but not include beyond the room through an open door (resulting in false triggering). For example, place the Sensor as shown in Fig. 2. Voltage Output: 12 Vdc at 100 ma (64 ma available for sensors; internal relay coil draws 36 ma). Temperature Range: 32 F to 95 F (0 C to 35 C). Sensor coverage areas in ft (m). EL7611A1003 M8020 The Sensor coverage can range from 20 x 20 ft (6.1 x 6.1m) to 40 x 40 ft (12.2 x 12.2m). A typical zone is about 25 x 25 ft (7.6 x 7.6m) for the lighting fixtures with overlapping Sensor coverage of up to 30 x 30 ft (9.1 x 9.1m) (Fig. 3). For open office space, use the EL7612A1001 because of its true 360 coverage and better capability to sense motion from ultrasonic waves that bounce off partitions, walls, floors and other hard reflecting surfaces. Overlap the control zones for open office space (Fig. 4). Open office areas with partitions may require more Sensors with the Sensors placed over the partition junctions (Fig. 5). OFFICE HALLWAY NOTE: Partitions over 5 ft (1.5m) tall may reduce the sensor coverage area. M8018 Fig. 5. Typical open office zone with partitions. The Power Pack is typically mounted above the ceiling in a junction box that contains the power, line voltage and a neutral for the lighting to be controlled. 30 FT (9M) Fig. 4. Typical open office zone overlap. 30 FT (9M) M8019 Wiring and Mounting CAUTION Do not wire more than three Sensors to one Power Pack. NOTES: 1. Most applications require UL listed, AWG, 3-conductor, Class 2 cable for low voltage wiring. For plenum return ceilings, use UL listed plenum-approved cables. 2. All Power Packs should be installed and wired in accordance with state, local and national electrical codes and requirements. 3. In return air plenum ceilings or areas, enclose all connections. 4. Mount an extension box or another junction box over the power switch pack
5 Wire and mount the Sensor and Power Pack as follows: 1. Run the wires between the Sensor, Power Pack, and power source locations as shown in the job drawings. Allow 4 to 6 feet of extra wire to permit fine tuning the Sensor placement. 2. Mount the Sensor mounting plate on the ceiling, wall, or electrical enclosure as shown in Fig. 6 and the job drawings using a mud ring, toggle bolts, screws, or anchors, as appropriate. NOTE: Observe the location of the microphones on the sensor in relation to the mounting slots (Fig. 6). Mount the Sensor mounting plate so the microphones are facing the correct direction. POWER PACK HIGH VOLTAGE CONNECTION MADE INSIDE J-BOX Fig. 8. Power Pack wire runs. M8015 MOUNTING PLATE Fig. 6. Sensor mounting. MICROPHONE (2) MOUNTING SLOT (2) M The Power Pack has four high voltage wires (Fig. 7): a hot line (black or orange), neutral (white) and blue/ brown switch legs. In a typical installation, the blue wire is connected to the hot and the brown wire is connected to the Load (lighting switch leg). The three low voltage wires are: 12 Vdc hot (red), common (black), and relay control (white) (Fig. 7). Wire the Power Pack as shown in Fig. 7 and the job drawings. Standalone Low Voltage Wiring 3. Wire the Sensor (Fig. 7). 4. Mount the Sensor on the Sensor mounting plate with screws. 5. Mount the Power Pack junction box as shown in the job drawings. 6. Mount the Power Pack with a 1/2-inch nipple to the junction box through a 1/2 in. knockout. Run the high voltage wires through the nipple into the junction box to make the connections (Fig. 8). The EL7621 Power Pack can be wired for standalone low voltage control as shown in Fig. 9. Typical low voltage wiring. M8022 CHECKOUT After the Sensor and Power Pack are installed, adjust the Sensor sensitivity so that the lights stay On when the controlled area is occupied. Before adjusting the Sensor, make sure all the office furniture is in place, the lighting circuits are powered, the HVAC systems are in the overridden/on position, and the VAV systems are set to the highest air-flow. Adjust the Sensor as follows: 1. Set the sensitivity to 4 or Set the time delay to 15 seconds (minimum). 3. Walk out of the Sensor range until the lights turn off. If the Sensor is too sensitive, turn down the sensitivity. 4. Walk into the controlled area. If the lights do not turn on, increase the sensitivity slightly and repeat this procedure until the lights turn on as required. NOTE: It may be necessary to turn up the sensitivity slightly if the lights turn off while the room is occupied. TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Lights will not turn On. Lights will not turn Off. Solution Short the Power Pack white and red wires. If the lights: Remain off, check the Power Pack and replace it if the lights still will not go on. Turn on, recheck the Sensor wiring and sensitivity setting. Still will not turn on, replace the Sensor. Lower the sensitivity to the minimum and reduce the time delay to the minimum. If after 20 seconds the lights turn off, the Sensor is probably false triggering. False triggering usually occurs from air flow, vibration, or when too many components are wired to a Power Pack, dropping the power supply voltage. For false triggering caused by air flow and vibration: Readjust the sensitivity. Readjust the time delay. Disconnect the write (Relay Control) wire from the Power Pack. If the lights remain on, replace the Power Pack. Move the Sensor to a different location. For false triggering caused by too many components wired to a Power Pack: Disconnect the white (Reelay Control) wire from the Power Pack. If the lights remain on, replace the Power Pack. Remove Sensors from the Power Pack. Where multiple Sensors and Power Packs are used, check each one individually. Add additional Power Packs. For special applications, contact the factory. Honeywell warranties its products to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three years from the date of installation. There are no obligations or liabilities on the part of Honeywell for consequential damages arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of this product or other indirect damages with respect to loss of property, revenue, or profit, or cost of removal or installation
