( % " Note 1: See Extra Hazard Groups 1 and 2 as defined by NFPA 13 Chapter 5, adopted edition Note 2: Additional hydrants may be needed to meet the spacing requirements HYDRANTS Standard hydrants (figure 1) must be located within 400 ft. of all exterior portions of your proposed structure(s). This, and the fire flow tables (above), will determine the Revised 12/20/11 number of hydrants required. Hydrants cannot be installed less than 40 ft. from a structure to ensure safe fire ground operations, and they must be protected by bollards if there is any chance of damage by vehicular traffic, including forklifts. Standard Hydrant Hydrants must be installed in compliance with NFPA 24 (adopted edition). They must also be painted safety yellow and marked with a blue reflective marker in the street to allow firefighters to locate the hydrant in the dark. They must be kept visible and accessible at all times, and vegetation must be kept clear for a minimum of 3 feet. PRESSURE Figure 1 Pressure for your system must be provided by tank elevation or a listed fire pump that can supply the required fire flow (calculated at 20 psi) to the hydrants at the furthest and highest extent of the system. Alternative 1: If your tank is provided with a direct tank connection and can be located such that the outlet is within 400 ft. (along an approved path of travel) of all exterior portions of the structure(s) to be protected, the hydrant system and listed fire pump may not be needed (NOTE: a listed fire pump may still be required for the fire sprinkler system). The number of tank outlets will be determined by Tables II B.1, II B.2 and II B.3, and the tank(s) must comply with NFPA 22 (adopted edition), however paved access must be provided to all outlets and there are some practical limitations that may make this alternative unsuitable for your project.
