5 2 Introduction The MTRA-FSP Level Control Relay is a solid-state electronic level control module housed in a hi-impact plastic case with a DIN rail attachment on the back. It is used to control pump relays in response to a liquid level sensor such as a MultiTrode probe. A pump thermal sensor can be connected to the MTRA- FSP for pump protection. During operation the LED indicators on the front panel indicate the current status including Pump On/Off, Thermal Fault, Probe Fault and Level Alarm. The MTRA-FSP level control relay is designed to be easy to install and configure. 6 4 Installation The MTRA-FSP is designed to be mounted onto a standard DIN rail. All power supply, input and output connections are located on the top of the relay housing. 4.1 Power Supply The MTRA-FSP can be supplied power in the following ways: V AC V AC with 12 30V DC Backup 12 30V DC Supply Only A switch or circuit-breaker and an overcurrent protection device must be included in the installation. The disconnection device must be in close proximity to the equipment and within easy reach of the operator, and be marked as the disconnecting device for the equipment. The input wiring and the switch/circuitbreaker/overcurrent device must be rated to at least the nominal input voltage being used. 7 4.2 DIP Switch Settings The MTRA-FSP is configured using the DIP switches located on the front of the relay enclosure. 8 5 Operation Modes The MTRA-FSP can be configured to operate in either Empty (Discharge) or Fill (Charge) mode. 5.1 Empty (Discharge) Mode Empty (Discharge) mode is used to pump liquid out of a well once it reaches a preset level. In this mode the relay operates as follows: The pump activates when the liquid reaches the high level probe pump activation delay period expires. The high level alarm probe will operate the Alarm Relay and also the Pump Relay (in case the high level probe has failed). The pump will continue to operate until the liquid level drops below the low level probe and the pump deactivation period expires. A thermal fault will deactivate the pump regardless of liquid level. A Probe Failsafe alarm will deactivate the pump regardless of liquid level. Note: Assumed Probe Faults: If a High Level, or High Alarm input is activated and the Low Level probe is deactivated, then the relay assumes the Low Level probe is faulty. In this situation the pump will continue to run for 60 seconds after the High Level and High Alarm inputs have deactivated. The Probe Fault LED will turn ON to indicate an Assumed Probe Fault. 10 5.2 Fill (Charge) Mode Fill (Charge) mode is used to fill up a well with liquid when the level falls to a preset level. In this mode the relay operates as follows: The pump activates when the liquid reaches the low level probe. The low level alarm probe will operate the Alarm Relay and also the Pump Relay (in case the low level probe has failed). The pump will continue to operate until the liquid level rises to the high level probe and the pump deactivation period expires. A thermal fault will deactivate the pump regardless of liquid level. A Probe Failsafe alarm will deactivate the pump regardless of liquid level. Note: Assumed Probe Faults: If a High Level, or High Alarm input is activated and the Low Level probe is deactivated, then the relay assumes the Low Level probe is faulty. In this situation the relay will wait for 60 seconds after the High Level input has deactivated, then start the pump. The Probe Fault LED will turn ON to indicate an Assumed Probe Fault. 12 6 Alarms The MTRA-FSP has the following alarm inputs: 6.1 Level Alarms (AL Probe) A conductive level sensor is connected to the AL Probe input to detect when the liquid level has risen above or below an acceptable level. In Empty (Discharge) mode this will be a high level alarm and will activate when the AL Probe input detects liquid and the activation delay has expired. In Fill (Charge) mode this will be a low level alarm and will activate when the AL Probe input is no longer detecting level (ie: the level has dropped below the sensor) and the activation delay has expired. When a level alarm is detected the Alarm contacts are activated and the Level Alarm LED flashes. The Alarm contacts can be used to operate an alarm device such as a light or siren. The alarm output can be set to Normally Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) using DIP Switch 6: NC alarm output (DIP Switch OFF) NO alarm output (DIP Switch ON) The alarm output can be configured to toggle (to flash an alarm light for example). This is set using DIP Switch 4: Constant alarm output (DIP Switch OFF) Flashing alarm output (DIP Switch ON) 6.2 Pump Alarms There are two types of pump alarms supported by the MTRA-FSP Thermal and Seal Thermal Alarm Input A pump thermal sensor can be wired into the Thermal input. This is used to detect when the pump is overheating due to a blockage or other fault. When a thermal alarm is detected the Thermal output contacts are activated and the Thermal Fault LED flashes. The thermal alarm will also turn off the pump if it is running. The pump will not be able to be switched on again until the thermal alarm condition is cleared. Page 12 of MTRA-FSP_Manual.doc

13 6.2.2 Thermal Backup (BU) Input The MTRA-FSP can be used as a backup pump control device for the MultiSmart Pump Controller and RTU. When used as a backup, the Thermal sensor is wired into the Thermal input, and the MultiSmart Thermal input is wired into the MTRA-FSP Thermal BU input Failsafe Probe Alarm Input MultiTrode probes can be sold with an extra connection to the top sensor for failsafe detection. This is used to detect if the probe sensor cable has broken by checking there is a circuit. If the cable is broken, there will be no circuit back to the failsafe input and an alarm will be raised. When a failsafe alarm occurs the Probe LED flashes and the Failsafe Alarm output contacts are activated. Also the pump contacts will be deactivated so the pump cannot run until the fault condition is removed. NOTE: If a non-failsafe probe is used then a jumper must be connected between the Alarm Probe and Failsafe Inputs to prevent Probe Fault Alarms occurring. NOTE: The failsafe probe input must be connected to the highest probe in the system if used Assumed Probe Faults If a High Level, or High Alarm input is activated and the Low Level probe is deactivated, then the relay assumes the Low Level probe is faulty. This condition is called an Assumed Probe Fault. The relay indicates this condition by flashing the Level Alarm LED - single pulse on, 3s off. The relay will also change its pumping behaviour to a timed method until the fault condition is no longer present. 14 7 Manual (Hand) and Off Inputs The MTRA-FSP can manually operate a pump using pushbuttons wired into the Manual (Hand) input and the Off input. 7.1 Manual Operation of Pump (Hand) Manual pump operation works as follows: Pushing the Manual (Hand) button will start the pump. The pump will continue to operate until the Off button is pushed, regardless of level. After the Off input has been de-activated, the MTRA-FSP will revert back to automatic operation. 15 8 Advanced Settings 8.1 Probe Sensitivity The MultiTrode Probe is a conductive level sensing device that relies on conductivity through the liquid to earth in order to detect level. For most common applications the default probe sensitivity setting of 20kohms will work correctly. The sensitivity can be changed using dip switches 7 and 8 if the sensitivity needs adjustment to allow for different types of liquid. The delay allows the level device to positively detect the liquid before operating the pump or an alarm. Pump delays are set using DIP Switch 3. Alarm Delays are set using DIP Switch 5.
