WATERSIDE NEWS Mandurah Water Rescue Group -- by Chris Robertson If you will be logging off after 1800, please advise the radio operator, who will then ask you to call in as usual, and they, in the meantime will advise our home base station to listen out for you. If for some reason the home base does not respond, please phone the commander (Barry Walton) on his mobile to log off, or leave a message. In the event you actually need to speak to an operator i.e. in the case of an emergency, Rockingham Sea Rescue (VN6KC) is manned until 2200 during the Summer months. Phone Ch Meg. 16 and 73 VHF. Another reminder to you, please use channel 82 on the VHF frequency rather than 73, as it gets very congested due to the boating fraternity around Fremantle using this channel, and we pick up all their chat. Also, it s great for the radio operator, if you nominate when calling in with your call sign, followed by which channel you are calling on, as we now have 7 radios to listen out for, and they are all situated very close to each other.(see below for example) Winter operating hours start on the 8 th May WEEKENDS ONLY Happy and safe boating, and don t forget to Log on/off. Mandurah Water Rescue x 3 This is Peel 000 x 3, on 91, 73 or 82. Thank you on behalf of the Radio Room. * * * YOUR COMMITTEE WISHES TO EXTEND OUR SINCERE THANKS TO OUR EAST WARD COUNCILLOR AND DEPUTY MAYOR, Cr DARREN LEE (left), FOR HIS CONTINUED INVOLVEMENT AND ASSISTANCE IN OUR WORK WITH MANDURAH CITY COUNCIL. WE WISH DARREN SUCCESS IN THE UPCOMING COUNCIL ELECTIONS. * * * SKIPPERS MUST HAND IN OLD FLARES Skippers carrying flares must dispose of expired flares by depositing them at designated collection centres. From July 1st, skippers operating in waters where flares are a required piece of safety equipment must carry an in date set or risk a $160 fine. They can correctly dispose of expired flares by dropping them at the Department of Transport offices listed as collection centres at Extract from Coastal Times, 24 July 2013 Page 2

THE WATERSIDE CRUISE The Waterside Cruise held on Sunday 10 th of March 2013 was a great success, enjoyed by all who attended. It was hosted by Rod and Cheryl Bishop of Mandurah Cruises and Gift Shop in appreciation and recognition for the effort Waterside residents do decorating and lighting their homes for the Christmas season. These photos from the trip are by your President, Jeff Marsh. Page 3

WATERSIDE NEWS THE NBN IN OUR STREET Local resident Colin Gilbert has been keeping tabs on what s happening with the National Broadband Network (NBN), particularly when work is being done in Waterside. Here is his update on the action in Waterside and what it means for residents. As you may know, Mandurah was selected as an early implementation area for the NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK (NBN), along with Geraldton and Victoria Park in WA. The planning and work of laying the fibre cables in the street and to homes and businesses started in Mandurah in 2012 and there has been a recent NBN switch on event in central Mandurah. NBN work is progressing mostly north of the estuary at this stage, including Dudley Park. A tip! If you think you can ignore the NBN, you cannot. Assuming it continues as planned by the current Government, and as contracted between NBN Co and Telstra, then 18 months after NBN fibre roll out in the area is completed Telstra may close down the copper network as it is ageing and high maintenance. Other providers currently rely on the Telstra copper network for phone and Internet fixed lines. So then your only options will be to go onto the NBN for fixed line phones and/or Internet, or go wireless with mobile phones and mobile Internet. Also, if you connect to the NBN when the street is wired, the basic fibre connection to the house is free. However, there may be a charge for latecomers. If the Government changes, then who knows what might happen. We have noted NBN action in Waterside Drive in the last few months. We saw: Telstra cable pits being replaced and enlarged and some duct replacement in places. Rope pulled in to ducts between the pits. This is to make it easy to pull in the fibre. A pit inspection in July the NBN technician doing this said we could expect NBN in our homes in the next 3 months. The official story is late 2013 or early Continued opposite page. Page 4

I wondered if there could be a new IOR (Internet over Rope) technology (I love Acronyms). After all, rope is made of fibre - but that is wishful thinking. We do know that a tight string between two tin cans works as a phone, it did when I was a kid. Local calls only, of course! Coalition Policy on Broadband We went to the Community Forum on Communications and Broadband on 24 July where Malcolm Turnbull talked about the Coalition s proposed model for Broadband. The model differs from the current Government s NBN approach in urban areas mainly in the final connection to the home or business premises. It will use the existing Telstra copper cables, avoiding some issues and costs of getting a fibre into the premises. The copper cables will be connected to fibre at junction points (called nodes) in the street. It is claimed that this is cheaper, quicker and less disruptive than fibre to the premises and, while it will not have the speed capability of fibre to the home, it is suggested that it will be quite adequate for home and small business users. Malcolm Turnbull said that due to age and reliability issues, some copper cables will need to be replaced in some areas. Now for some detail on NBN connection. Stop reading if you are not into internet etc. Assuming the NBN fibre to the home proceeds in this area (and I think it will, even if the Government changes). To connect to the NBN, a fibre will be pulled in to the existing pipe for the telephone wire to your home, or if that is not good enough, a new pipe installed. It terminates in a small NBN Utility Box (see graphic below) replacing the existing telephone connection box on the outside of the house. There is no charge by NBN Co for this. You can vary this location at extra cost by negotiation in advance with NBN. Graphic from the NBN Co. brochure, Preparing for the NBN. Inside the house, or attached garage, directly the other side of the wall to the external box, there will be several more boxes installed as in the picture. You will need to provide a power point at this spot, preferably dedicated to the NBN equipment as shown and allow for your router power connection if you need one. Your computer and telephone cabling will plug into one of these boxes. Continued overleaf Page 5

If that is not where you want to connect your computer to the internet, you will need either computer cabling installed in the house (at your expense) by an electrician or technician to the computer location(s), or use a wireless router (known as WIFI) to connect the computer(s) to the NBN box. You will not need a modem. Some existing wireless routers may be suitable, but older ones may be too slow to realise the benefit of the NBN speed or may not be capable of programming to exclude the modem function. You should be able to use your existing telephone handsets, particularly if you have a modern multi phone or wireless handset system. The house phone wiring has to be connected to the NBN Connection Box. Alternatively some service providers offer smart digital phones which replace your existing phone handsets, providing an integrated service with packaged phone and internet plans which can be cost effective in operation but additional initial cost. It would be wise to postpone any purchase of new phone or router / modem equipment until the NBN is installed. NBN Co installs the fibre cable in the street and the connection to the house and does not charge for this. To get the other equipment installed and a phone and/or internet service in operation over the NBN you will need to contact a service provider not NBN Co and choose a plan for your telephone and/or internet service. Internet plans will have speed and download capacity options, unlike present Internet plans which are download capacity related only and whatever speed you can get. There will be installation charges, monthly plan charges and perhaps usage charges, particularly for telephone calls, just like your existing non-nbn services. You could start by asking your current phone and/or Internet provider if they will offer a service over NBN in this area, but I suggest you shop around, not for the cheapest but for one you consider reliable with the features you need. There is more information and a list of service providers in our area (just type in your address) on the NBN website at I am happy to answer any queries in as much as I can. I have no commercial affiliation with any provider or the NBN. -- Colin Gilbert gilbert@iinet.net.au * * * * KEY DATE FOR 2013 Annual General Meeting and Breakfast 10am (9am for breakfast), Sunday 13 October 2013 JEFF MARSH President Page 6
