John Hope Bryant Founder of Operation Hope January Section Event OPC & Integration: Eliminating Islands of Information OPC and its various standards enable the simple integration of information across disparate platforms. It also shifts the responsibility for designing a communication interface from an integrator or large DCS manufacturer to each component system designer. Like printer drivers, each component designer is responsible for building a standard communication interface that any other software can rely on to communicate with the device. This allows any OPC enabled device to speak to any other. This discussion will introduce the audience to the big picture of OPC and show the basic architecture. It will also show how a project might be structured to connect multiple OPC enabled devices as well as the challenges that may occur as well. We will also highlight the advantages of sharing information via OPC for process control as well as higher level reporting such as enterprise historians, ERP and MRP systems. About the Speaker. Randy Warren is a process control system designer with over 15 years experience in process controls and programming. The event was a success again this year despite some rough seas. Looking back at 2009, those that attended the Automation OC show October 27 probably enjoyed plenty of well-made German food for free, and visited some of the 60+ exhibitors at the show. For our first show, I think it was a huge success. As always, we had much to learn and next year will be all that much better. I would also like to thank the ISAOC Board members (especially Bis Mitra), John Prince and Kandace Peterson for all their work and time, the day of the event was a big team effort. November s presentation by Romel Bhullar and Mark Murphy, both highly respected engineers from Fluor, on the topic of Designing Safer Plants, was well attended and informative. Thank you to both for donating their time to educate the OC members. The Christmas Cruise as mentioned above has replaced the December meeting. Lastly, we will be adding a new addition to the beginning of each presentation. As a result of the economy, we will be offering a brief one-minute slot to any individual, seeking a job, to speak to the group and express their qualifications and type of job they are seeking. Employers looking for employees will also be given a one-minute slot to advertise their available positions. We hope this adds to the value of the meetings and encourage all to take advantage of the opportunity. Don t forget you also have the opportunity to advertise your availability in the Chart newsletter for free as well. (Lenexa, Kansas, USA) is proud to announce the newest addition to the SOR family of process instruments the 805PT Pressure Transmitter. The 805PT is a low-cost explosion proof pressure transmitter that will fit into tight hazardous locations and provides rugged performance that outshines the competition. The 805PT is available in seven fixed ranges from 100 to 10,000 psi or as a field adjustable unit with its own calibration software kit. The new 805PT is backed by the stringent manufacturing and design standards you have come to expect from SOR. The 805PT was developed as a response to a request from oil and gas customers for a robust, dependable stick-type transmitter. However, it is also an ideal solution for any application requiring a simple, 4-20mA transmitter such as power generation, petrochemical plants, water/ wastewater treatment facilities and pulp and paper mills. The 805PT embodies the SOR pedigree of more than 50 years of supplying the process instrumentation to the world s industries with tough, dependable instruments. The new electronic transmitter joins the company s popular Mini- Hermet Pressure Transmitter, Mini Hermet Pressure Switch, Model 1540 Pneumatic Level Switch and Model 1510 Electric Level Switch product offerings for downstream, mid-stream and upstream oil and gas operations. SOR Inc. is represented by Patten Systems Inc.for parts of Southern California and Nevada and can be reached at December 2009 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 11
