1 Standard Retirement Village Fire Emergency Staff Training Material Standard Retirement Village takes fire safety seriously. This training programme covers: The relevant legislation. The building's fire safety systems. What to do if you discover or are warned of a fire in the building. The duties of the Building Warden and Fire Wardens in a fire emergency. This training is included in the induction for new staff and is also conducted every 6 months. Staff are assessed on their knowledge of the training programme after each session. Legislation: The training starts with an overview of the legislation concerning evacuation schemes. Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 2006 Fire Service Act 1975 Active Fire Safety Systems: Standard Retirement Village is equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system installed to NZS 4541:2007. The fire alarm will sound if it is triggered automatically by smoke or heat or if a manual call point is operated. What happens if more than one smoke detector, or the manual fire alarm or the sprinkler system is activated: staff member(s) call 111 global alarm is set off Fire Service is automatically notified all fire doors close and are unlocked (some fire doors will have been locked until the fire emergency, to ensure residents and members of the public enter and exit the facility via the monitored entrance) Remote Display Unit (RDU) panels (locations shown on attached plan of facility) indicate the smoke detector location (via the analogue addressable alarm system) What happens when one smoke detector is initiated: RDU panels (locations shown on attached plan of facility) indicate the smoke detector location (via the analogue addressable alarm system) Staff member(s) locate the activated smoke detector: o If no fire present (i.e. false alarm from toaster, smoker etc) staff member resets the RDU after a thorough check. o If fire present, staff member(s) sets off manual alarm, calls 111, and then begins evacuation as described below.

2 If you discover a fire in the building: If you find signs of fire, (smoke, flames etc): Warn other occupants nearby and remove anyone in immediate danger Operate a manual call point to activate the fire alarm Dial 111 from a mobile or from a phone in a safe location Start the evacuation process If you are warned of a fire: Operate the fire alarm if it not already sounding Start the evacuation process How to make a 111 call: Tell the Fire Service: The nature of the emergency (e.g. alarms ringing) Building name Standard Retirement Village Building address 44 Pohewa Place, Otumoetai, Tauranga Nearest intersection Crossroads Street Evacuation Management Team: In the event of a fire the Charge Nurse assumes the role of Building Warden. All other staff member will be Fire Wardens. Building Warden: The Building Warden is the Charge Nurse on duty and will be identified by wearing a yellow hi-visibility jerkin marked with the words "Building Warden". As part of their regular duties they will ensure that the means of escape from fire for the building are kept free of obstacles, that exit doors are not locked or barred, that smokecontrol and fire-stop doors are not wedged open and that stairwells and passageways are not used for storage or accumulation of waste. In the event of a fire alarm sounding they will: Uplift and don the Building Warden's identification. Report to the nearest RDU to determine the cause and location of alarm activation. Proceed to the affected part of the building. If no fire is present reset the RDU. If signs of fire are found direct Fire Wardens to commence evacuating occupants to the next firecell, starting with those in immediate danger, assisting if necessary. Confirm that the 111 call to the Fire Service has been made. Proceed to the alarm panel outside the main entrance to await the Fire Service. Maintain radio contact with the Fire Wardens. If it becomes necessary, co-ordinate the further evacuation of occupants to another place of safety inside the building or evacuate all occupants to a place of safety outside the building. When the Fire Service arrive inform the officer in charge of the status of the evacuation and the location of anybody remaining inside the building.

3 Fire Wardens: All staff other than the charge nurse will act as Fire Wardens in the event of a fire emergency. As staff are uniformed they are readily identifiable and there is no need for specific Fire Warden identification. In the event of a fire alarm sounding they will: Make their way to the area indicated on the RDU and starting with those at highest risk from fire (and if safe to do so): Ensure people at immediate risk who are mobile go to: o the nearest place of safety inside, OR o to a place of safety outside. Assist immobile people to nearest place of safety (using wheelchairs or using mobile beds if necessary) if possible and safe to do so. Indicate checked empty rooms with a pillow placed outside the door (ensure door has been closed). Go to, and remain with people in the place of safety inside, unless: o told to help everyone move out by a firefighter, OR o it becomes unsafe to remain, in which case move everyone to another place of safety (inside or outside). Maintain radio contact with the Building Warden to update them on the status of the evacuation in your area. The staff are also trained in the following procedures: Finding signs of fire (smoke alarm or fire alarm or sprinklers go off, smoke seen or smelt, flames seen, non-staff person tells staff member) If a staff member becomes aware of a fire they: activate the manual alarm and call 111 start the evacuation procedure. How to blanket drag an immobile person (when one staff member needs to move an immobile resident, and no other means are available) place patient face up on a blanket, drag the blanket at head end, with head and shoulders lightly raised. Firefighting Equipment: All staff are trained in the use of firefighting equipment as follows. What type to use and how to use them. Fire extinguishers and fire blankets should only be used in the following circumstances: When everyone has been evacuated and accounted for at a safe meeting place. When the fire service has been called. When it is safe to do so considering the size and location of the fire. Access to the fire is unrestricted and a safe retreat is possible at all times. Remember life is more important than property, don't put yourself or others at risk. Only when everyone is outside and the fire service has been called, should you attempt to put the fire out, and only if it is contained and you can safely escape.

Where do I meet the building warden during a fire evacuation? 11. What do I do if I come across thick smoke while performing my warden s duties? 12. How do I recognise an exit door? 13. If the lighting is off, where is the nearest torch? 14. Where is the main electrical switch? 15. My wallet and rings are in the changing room while the fire alarm is sounding - what do I do about them? 16. An occupant says, I want my handbag while the Fire alarm is sounding - what do I do about it? 17. Who meets the Fire Services when they arrive? 18. Where is the fire alarm panel located? 19. Do I shut doors during an evacuation? 20. Building occupants are blocking building access for the Fire Service what action do I take?
