1 Third Alarm A Publication of the OFBA Volume 47, No. 3 May - June 2017 This is the wrap issue. Our featured rig, one of the few non-traditionally coloured fire trucks in this province, belongs to Algonquin College in Ottawa. Used in their fire training program, this green wrapped truck is an ex-ottawa KME engine. (Ken Walton photo). Beginning on page 18, we look at various treatments done in Ontario, and at a controversial advertising campaign from the U.K. Ads on fire trucks? An unnecessary distraction, according to some. You decide.

3 President s Message Sixteen members, one guest and Diesel gathered in Niagara on the Lake on an overcast May 27 as we kicked off our first photo tour of 2017 visiting both the NOTL and Niagara Falls fire services. Unfortunately, a computer malfunction resulted in none of our members receiving the days schedule or preliminary rosters of the NOTL and Niagara Falls departments. I have been sending these notices out to the members in two groups for the past couple of years with no problems but will now send them in 4-6 groups starting with the upcoming tour in June. If you do not receive such messages by 3-4 days before a tour date, please check your spam or junk file first and, if the message is not there, let me know immediately and I will send you the information, The schedule will also be posted on the club website as soon as it is confirmed. The next photo tour with be held on Saturday, June 24 and plans are to visit Minto, North Wellington, Mapleton and Centre Wellington Fire Departments. The tour is scheduled to commence at 0900 hrs at the Mt. Forest fire hall, 381 Main St. North. Final details will be sent out on the 18th or 19th. The July tour will be held on the 29th in Uxbridge, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Central York. As of this writing we have confirmation from Whitchurch-Stouffville and Central York. Once again, final details will be out by the 25th of July if not sooner. One of the suggestions received as part of our member survey was to give the members the opportunity to purchase and wear ball caps and/or T-shirst displaying the OFBA logo. If you would be interested in either or both items please advise Des Brett. If enough members are interested we will find a supplier and obtain a firm price before ordering. We have been advised that ball caps would normally retail for $20-25 and I think T-shirts would be in the same price range. Finally, a very happy 90th birthday to member George Whittaker of Niagara on the Lake who came out to greet the group on the 27th of May. Gerry is the former chief of Niagara on the Lake and was instrumental in getting the Regional Niagara Buff s Canteen service going in the late 80s. Hope to see you in Mount Forest, Bob Rupert. From our Membership Secretary It appears that we have had a problem collecting dues this year, as there are still approximately 14 % of our members who have failed to pay, as of the date of this third printing. This is a distressing occurrence as we are half way into another year, and as mentioned previously, we are hoping to be able to issue an updated Membership Roster in the near future. But we cannot do so until all dues are paid. Two new members have joined this year, but we are always on the quest for new members, so if you happen to know someone who is interested in the Fire Service, please ask them to get in touch with us. As you all know, we now have two alternatives to enjoy our bi-monthly publication, The Third Alarm hard copy or electronic version. And a reminder that Desmond is always on the lookout for new photos for future issues, as well as articles that you feel may be of interest to the members. I would especially like to hear from our international members, several of whom have sent in very informative articles in the past. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer Robert Herscovitch, Membership Third Alarm May June 2017 Page 3

Inside the Inferno: A Firefighter s Story of the Brotherhood that Saved Fort McMurray is being published this May, one year after the event. Written by Damian Asher with Omar Mouallem, the book is a first-person account of Asher s story. Asher is a captain of the city s fire department and a life-long Fort McMurray resident. 15 HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: IDENTITY THEFT? By Walt McCall In 1939, the Village of Swansea placed an order with Bickle-Seagrave Ltd. of Woodstock, Ontario for a new pumper. As is still the practice, the contract between the purchaser and the manufacturer included precise details as to how the apparatus was to be designed and constructed. The pumper was duly built and delivered to Swansea later that same year. On a Gramm chassis powered by a Waukesha six-cylinder engine, it had a sleek, streamlined body with open semi-cab, 625 gpm pump and a 35-foot aluminum ladder stowed in an overhead ladder rack. The Village s name was written in flowing script on the truck s broad, uncluttered body sides. The `39 Bickle-Seagrave remained in service in the Swansea hall on DeForest Rd. until 1965 when it was replaced by a 1965 Mack C-Series canopy cab pumper. Two years later the Village of Swansea was annexed by Metro Toronto and the former Swansea hall became the TFD s Station #16. Not long after, the Bickle- Seagrave was retired. It was ultimately acquired by John and Neal Hendrie of RR#6 Chatham. In the three decades they have owned it, the Hendrie brothers have brought their truck to many antique fire apparatus shows, including the annual musters in St. Thomas and Chatham. While judging at one of the St. Thomas musters, I stopped by to chat with the Hendries. John pulled out the original factory order and specs book for the truck. I always thought the Swansea pumper bore an uncanny likeness to the streamlined American- LaFrance 500 Series introduced in 1938 and produced until As I soon discovered, this was no coincidence. Here are the actual words right out of the B/S specs book: Body to carry 1200 ft. of standard 2-1/2 fire hose. Note: this body is to be streamlined or a duplicate of the LaFrance Imperial job, descriptive folder which R.S.B. (Robert Sydney Bickle) has: the body to extend well over the rear fenders. The streamlining of the body to enclose side and rear steps, the top of the body on each side to be curved inward to cover the suction hose which is to be mounted inside. Just like the ALF 500, the hose bed was in the centre of the body, with smaller compartments on each side. Besides the Swansea semi-custom, Bickle-Seagrave delivered several International D-model pumpers featuring this same copycat styling, lifted right out of an American-LaFrance sales brochure. One of them went to Leaside in It s still around, in Lansdowne. Creemore has a similar B/S International. Imitation, it is said, is the sincerest form of flattery. But in the notoriously competitive fire apparatus business you do anything to get the customer s order up to and including what today would be considered a form of industrial identity theft. 21 A story on an interesting set up in Onandaga County, NY, in the town of Baldwinsville. BFD Station 2 is a unique station in that it is shared with Lakeside Fire District, who also run it as their Station 2. There are five vehicles that run from this station, three for the BFD and two for the LFD. Even though they each maintain their own apparatus and staffing, the members at this station will cross staff and respond with each other s apparatus as required, to provide a guaranteed response. Baldwinsville has two other stations, Lakeside operates from another station as well. Here are the rigs from the combined hall: Baldwinsville Engine 5 is a 2002 Spartan Metrostar/Saulsbury, 1250gpm/1000gwt.
