5 DESCRIPTION The RFT-868-PIR is the RFTide device suitable for volumetric detection purposes. It is composed by a passive infrared sensor and a radio module working at the frequency of 868.3Mhz. The alarm is activated by the dual element pyro-electric sensor which reveals the body heat and through the radio module it will send the information to the control unit. That kind of device fits the room and offices requirements and due to its sensitivity regulation it s useful also for smaller environment. The use of the microcontroller digital technology combined with Fresnel optics allows a huge resolution in the alarm detection (37 ray bundle on 3 horizontal plane), false alarm immunity and high reliability with no sensitivity reduction; in particular a digital implemented impulse counter is used for false alarm avoidance. The device is protected against tampering with a notification signal to the control unit. It has an adjustable volumetric detection coverage from 8 meters to 20 meters and 100 wide range. During the inhibit time of 4 minutes, after a stabilization of 40 seconds of the sensor, the device stores every event (alarm and tamper) and send it after the inhibition. Low consumption in standby mode allows to obtain a long lifetime of the batteries. The mounting support helps to obtain the right angulation of the device. 6 Figure 2 : PIR sensor internal view with description FIRST CONFIGURATION Referring to Figure 2, these first steps must be followed: a. Remove the screw from the bottom and then open the case of the device. b. As per first configuration, set the dipswitch as follow: 1. OFF 2. OFF 3. ON 4. OFF c. Insert the 2 triple-a batteries. d. Follow the Learning Procedure part explained in the chapter DEVICE SETTINGS at page 8. e. For advanced setup refer to Table 1 Dip-switch configuration at page 9.

7 WALL MOUNTING I. Mounting without brackets Figure 3 : Backplate of the case 1. Remove the front panel and then the printed circuit board using the plastic clip on position M of Figure Make holes in positions P if the device will be placed on a flat wall or positions A if it will be placed in a corner. Holes must be 6 mm maximum of diameter, consider that the bottom of the device will be the round shaped one. It s suggested to be placed at 2.10 m height. 3. Place the printed circuit board, the batteries and close the front panel. II. Mounting with brackets 1. Fix the bracket in the bottom of the case with the screws. 2. Place the bracket in the wall, about at 2.10 m height, then direct the device to the desired area, consider an angle of about 6 to the wall. 3. Mount the batteries and close the front panel. Mounting recommendations: In order to have a correct installation and to avoid false alarms some basic rules must be followed: Place the device on stable surfaces and not subject to vibrations. Do not install the device exposed to sun light or source light(e.g. lamps). Do not install the device near air flows (e.g. air conditioner). Do not install the device pointing any source of heat (e.g. radiators, fireplaces, cookers). Do not point the sensor direct to glass surfaces. I. Learning procedure DEVICE SETTINGS In order to let the device communicate with the Control Unit of the existing RFTide network the following steps must be done: 1. Keep pushing the Learn button (Figure 2) for about 3 seconds, till a red led turns on. 2. Till 15 seconds, the Control Unit has to send a PROGR_MESSAGE signal to the device. That message must contain the node address which the sensor will be assigned and the Network ID. 3. If the message is received, the red led must be blinking for a while, then it turns off. II. Keep Alive Referring to Figure 2, the Keep Alive button permit the device to send instantly a message as follow: Command: SEND_PACKET 0x00 0x00 Destination: Control Unit address 0x[Control Unit ID] Payload Byte 0: PIR Device 0x01 Payload Byte 1: Keep Alive message 0x01 Payload Byte 2 7. 9 As for every SEND_PACKET message, the RFTide module re-send the message in case that the ANSWER_MESSAGE from the Control Unit is not received. The sensor will make 2 retry and then goes off after 1 second. IV. To put back in continuous transmission mode it s necessary to turn off and then on again. See Table 2 for the radio mode bit status. To set the supervision of the device it s necessary to turn on the dip-switch 2 (Supervision), in this way the radio module will transmit a supervision message every 60 minutes (see Table 2 for the supervision bit status). In order to avoid false alarms it is possible to set the number of ray bundles that has to be crossed for trigger the device with the dip-switch 3 (Pulse Counter), active means 2 rays in 20 seconds, not active means it starts immediately. During the setup of the device it s important to understand the quality of the communication, to do so it s necessary that the device transmit data as much as possible. For that the inhibition time could be changed with the dip-switch 4 (Inhibition Time): every alarm that the device detects is stored and then sent at the end of the inhibition time. It s suggested to use 4 seconds for setup time and 4 minutes for normal operations. We suggest to use alkaline batteries. The accidental reversal of the polarity won t cause any electrical damage to the device or batteries drain. In case of loosing of acid from batteries, remove them and clean the contacts. If the sensor lens is dirty clean it with a dry soft cloth. Here follows some cases which could be resolved easily. Buzzer goes on when the batteries are inserted in the holder: That s the indicator of the low voltage alarm. The batteries need to be replaced and if the radio module is already configured in the RFTide network, the Control Unit will receive a low battery message. The Control Unit doesn t receive any message from the PIR: There could be a dual problem, to avoid radio issues it s necessary to repeat the learning procedure as described in the chapter DEVICE SETTINGS at page 8 or the configuration of the dip-switch is wrong, see point b of the chapter FIRST CONFIGURATION at page 6. The device can t detect far/close distances: Be sure to have mounted the device properly as per Figure 4 and check the sensitivity regulation trimmer show in Figure 1.
