1 Company About us Safety at the airport Fire service Fire service Since the 9th of October 1997, the airport fire service has been recognised as a plant fire brigade. In, currently, two fire stations about 100 full-time and 64 part-time firemen are employed. The plant fire brigade at Leipzig/Halle Airport is responsible for active and preventive fire protection, for technical assistance including flight operations safety (also on the areas of the airport used by DHL). The plant fire brigade is supported in this by at least six workers from the Leipzig DHL hub. Officially recognised first aid training centre Accidents occur not only on the roads or at work. A large proportion of accidents happen in leisure time or in the home. For this reason alone it is worthwhile to complete a basic first aid course. For most people, gaining their driving licence was a long time ago, and therefore their knowledge needs refreshing. Our course offering: Immediate lifesaving measures First aid course First aid training Heart-lung reanimation (CPR) If your previous first aid course was more than two years ago, we recommend taking part in a refresher course. We are always available for questions, registrations or requests. Duties of the works fire service Ensuring air traffic safety in accordance with ICAO According to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Leipzig/Halle Airport belongs to fire protection category 10. Therefore the ICAO has set the following requirements (Annex 14): mobile water volume: 32,200l; ejection rate per minute: 11,200l; thereof first vehicle 50 per cent of ejection rate additional extinguishing material powder: 450kg minimum three main extinguishing vehicles; reaction time: max. 3 minutes Preventive and active fire protection Provide fire protection technical advice for building projects Prepare and update fire regulations Conduct fire regulation compliance inspections Prepare and verify evacuation procedures Technical assistance Clear spilled fuel Assist with traffic accidents Clear dangerous materials Free people from jammed lifts

Consequently the requirements of the international civil aviation authorities (ICAO) with regard to the operational start of the DHL freight hub in 2008 have been fulfilled. The special feature of this fire engine is its foam unit One Seven. Thanks to a special high pressure process, seven foam bubbles are produced from each drop of water. This process spares resources, gives the foam a high cling factor and prevents water damage as a result of fire extinguishing activities. The name Pegasus comes from the project title of the DHL establishment.
