2 RELIABLE AIR QUALITY MEASUREMENT IN ROAD TUNNELS Continuously onitoring air quality and visibility in tunnels is a vital factor in ensuring road safety: It is becoing increasingly iportant to accurately onitor nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), as even extreely low concentrations (<< 1 pp) can be harful. Particles of dust and soot, for exaple, as well as abrasion fro tires and brakes, restrict visibility in tunnels. Plus, the concentration of nitrogen onoxide (NO), produced by diesel-fueled vehicles which are growing in nuber, needs to be onitored reliably. SICK's VICOTEC320 air quality tunnel sensors have long been renowned for accurately onitoring the liit values of NO 2 and NO, and they also use direct, in-situ easureent technology to continuously easure visibility (VIS) in the tunnel atosphere. These easured values are used to control ventilation in tunnels precisely and reliably. Maintenance-free operation of the VICOTEC320 is possible for ore than a year, without coproising on the high level of accuracy and without drifts or cross sensitivities. 2 VICOTEC320 SICK /

3 DOAS spectroscopy for reliable easureent of NO 2 and NO Gases absorb light with different wavelengths to varying extents. Plotting the intensity of the light beaed through the gas as a function of the wavelength gives a characteristic spectru for each gas coponent, which ore or less represents the fingerprint of the gas. In the VICOTEC320, there is an optical grid that spectrally disperses the bea of light reflected by the reflector. A highly sensitive, stabilized line scan caera is used to deterine the intensity of each wavelength and record the spectru. This is then analyzed using the DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) principle, which akes it possible to deterine the concentration of individual gases / VICOTEC320 SICK 3
