Adds new definitions differentiating the levels of deficiency for determining the priority of repair. Updates testing frequencies based on a growing data base of inspection, testing, and maintenance records. (was weekly) NFPA 25 Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems 2011 Edition Sprinkler Head Testing o In service > 50 yrs: replace or test (repeat every 10 yrs.) o Sprinklers manufactured prior to 1920 shall be replaced. o Fast response > 20 yrs in service: replace or test (repeat every 10 yrs.) o Extra High Temp sprinklers, exposed to extreme temps: test at 5-year intervals. o In service > 75 yrs: replace or test (repeat every 5 yrs.) o Dry sprinklers that have been in service for 10 years shall be replaced or representative samples shall be tested and then retested at 10-year intervals (NEW). 9

10 NFPA 25 Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems 2011 Edition Internal Inspection of Piping / 5 yr Flushing o o o o Required to be done in two places: By opening a flushing connection at the end of one main and By removing a sprinkler toward the end of one branch line for the purpose of inspecting for the presence of foreign organic and inorganic material. Alternative nondestructive examination methods shall be permitted. Tubercules or slime, if found, shall be tested for indications of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). 11 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code 2010 Edition Installation Standard (many updates designers should be aware of) Inspection, Testing and Maintenance Standard (some minor changes vendors should be aware of) Sample forms provided and charts for ease of use Major change in the scope and organization of the document. This is reflected in the new title, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. Two new chapters have also been on circuits and pathways and emergency control functions and interfaces. Two new guidance annexes, Annex C on System Performance and Design, and Annex D on Speech Intelligibility. (910 mm) from an air supply diffuser or return air opening. Nothing new here!! 11

12 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code 2010 Edition Manual Fire Alarm Pull Stations o Unless installed in an environment that precludes the use of red paint or red plastic, manual fire alarm boxes shall be red in color. o Manual pull stations for initiating other than the fire alarm shall be permitted if the devices are differentiated by a color other than red and labeling. o Manual fire alarm boxes shall be mounted on a background of contrasting color. NFPA 90A Standard for the Installation of Air- Conditioning and Ventilating Systems 2012 Edition Installation Standard (many updates designers should be aware of) Testing and inspection moved to: o NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives o NFPA 105 Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives Test and inspection frequency shall then be every 4 years, except in hospitals, where the frequency shall be every 6 years. 12

13 NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency Power and Standby Power Systems 2010 Edition Installation Standard Also provide Maintenance and Operational Testing Now allows maintenance free batteries New monthly and annual load test requirements ATS testing requirements Need to meet with your vendor or staff to review all requirements!!! Now a CODE vs Edition was a STANDARD & was applicable only as referenced by NFPA 101 CMS applies to all Health Care and Ambulatory Healthcare Occupancies 13

14 Chapters 1-4: Core Chapters Chapter 1: Administration Chapter 2: Referenced Publications Chapter 3: Definitions Chapter 4: Fundamentals Chapter 4 Fundamentals Building systems in health care facilities shall be designed to meet system Category 1 through Category 4 requirements as detailed in the code. Categories shall be determined by following and documenting a defined risk assessment procedure. The Category definitions in Chapter 4 shall apply to Chapters 5-11 (Specific Systems). 14

Required that mechanical systems have the capability of controlling humidity levels at 35% or above April 19, 2013 S & C Memo allows a lower limited of 20% humidity to be used NFPA 99 (2012 Ed.) References ASHRAE , not most current ASHRAE that references 20% RH NFPA 99(2012 Ed.) removed smoke control requirement in anesthetizing locations CMS Proposed Rule referenced to retain it but FINAL RULE did not!! 17
