F-CLASS MODEL M6L WET CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHER Installation, Operation, Recharge and Maintenance Manual
All fire extinguishers should be installed, inspected and maintained in accordance with the requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction. When maintenance is indicated, it should be performed by trained persons having proper equipment. Fire extinguishers are pressure vessels and must be treated with respect and handled with care. They are mechanical devices and require periodic maintenance to be sure that they are ready to operate properly and safely. ANSUL strongly recommends that the maintenance of portable fire extinguishers be done by a trained professional such as your local authorized distributor. Ansul Incorporated has original factory parts available to insure proper maintenance use of substitute parts releases ANSUL of its warranty obligations. ANSUL parts have machined surfaces and threads which are manufactured to exacting tolerances. O- rings, hoses, nozzles, and all metal parts meet precise specifications and are subjected to multiple in-house inspections and tests for acceptability. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. 4 INTRODUCTION Page 1 INTRODUCTION The F-Class Model M6L 6 L (1.6 gal) wet chemical fire extinguisher has been specifically designed to combat fires in restaurant kitchen cooking appliances. The fire extinguishing agent is a specially-formulated, aqueous solution of inorganic salts. Newer, more efficient cooking appliances plus the use of non-saturated cooking oils require a fire extinguishing agent which will not only extinguish a fire but provide a cooling effect. This cooling effect is better realized with a wet chemical than with previously recommended dry chemicals. These attractive, easy to use and maintain wet chemical extinguishers have a special spray nozzle which allows the user to stand back at a safe distance while applying the agent to a cooking appliance. There is no blinding cloud of chemical so the user is able to apply the agent just where it is needed to extinguish the fire. Cleanup is quicker and easier since airborne particles do not spread to other areas. APPROVALS Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) CE Marked Products European Standard for Portable Extinguisher EN3
INSTALLATION Page 2 INSTALLATION Fire extinguisher should be easily accessible in case of fire. The extinguisher should be installed in a dry and clean area where it is protected against damages and harsh weather conditions. Locations where extinguishers are mounted should be marked with an extinguisher sign pictogram. Extinguishers should be mounted at a suitable height which makes it easy to release them from the fastening bracket without any difficulty. A suitable installation height, where the extinguisher handle is located, would be at a height of 80 cm to 120 cm (2.5 ft to 4 ft). For the exact number of required extinguishers and the installation position, please refer to national law.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Page 3 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS! CAUTION Persons expected to use this extinguisher should be trained in initiating its operation and in proper fire fighting technique. Hands on training will prepare personnel with the feel for this extinguisher so that the most effective application can be utilized in an emergency situation. The basic operating instructions are contained in the pictogram on every nameplate (label). The following elaborates on these instructions.! WARNING In case of fire, first activate kitchen fire suppression system or turn off appliance to remove heat source. 1. Remove extinguisher from wall hanger bracket. 2. HOLD EXTINGUISHER UPRIGHT AND REMOVE RING PIN. 3. START BACK a minimum of 3.0 m (10 ft) from the fire. Grasp the wand and AIM the nozzle AT THE BASE OF THE FIRE nearest you. 4. Keeping the extinguisher upright, SQUEEZE the LEVER to discharge. SWEEP the agent stream FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND CONTINUE TO APPLY UNTIL EXTIN- GUISHER IS EMPTY. (Continued application of the agent even after the fire appears to be out permits additional cooling and retards flash back.) 5. Evacuate and ventilate the area immediately after extinguishing the fire. The fumes and smoke from any fire may be hazardous and can be deadly.
INSPECTION Page 4 INSPECTION This extinguisher should be INSPECTED at regular intervals to insure that it is ready for use. A quick check should be made of the extinguisher for the following: 1. Located in designated place. 2. No obstructions to access or visibility. 3. Operating instructions on nameplate (label) and facing outward. 4. Seals and tamper indicators not broken or missing. 5. Determine fullness by weighing. 6. Examine for obvious physical or mechanical damage, corrosion, leakage or clogged nozzle. 7. Visually check plastic components for changes such as cracking, discoloration, etc. 8. Pressure gauge reading in the operable area. 9. Instruction placard is in its correct location and easily readable.
MAINTENANCE Page 5 MAINTENANCE At least every two years (or more frequently if indicated by an inspection), MAINTENANCE should be performed. MAINTE- NANCE is a thorough check of the extinguisher. It is intended to give maximum assurance that an extinguisher will operate effectively and safely. It includes a thorough examination and any necessary repair or replacement. It will normally reveal the need for hydrostatic testing. Observe the specified torques. The containers of the permanent pressure type fire-extinguishers are gas cylinders in the sense of the Pressure Equipment Directive. Genuine OEM spare parts conform to inspection and approval requirements. Important: Any parts found during an inspection to be damaged or failing to meet safety requirements shall be replaced by approved spare parts. 1. Clean extinguisher to remove dirt, grease or foreign material. Check to make sure that the instruction nameplate is securely fastened and legible. Inspect the cylinder for corrosion, abrasion, dents or weld damage. If any of these conditions are found and you doubt the integrity of the cylinder, hydrostatically test, using the proof pressure method and a suitable cage. Note: When cleaning, avoid use of solvents around the pressure gauge. They could seriously damage the plastic gauge face. 2. Inspect the extinguisher for damaged, missing or substitute parts. Use only original manufacturer s replacement parts. 3. Weigh extinguisher and compare with designated weight. Recharge extinguisher if weight is not within the indicated allowable tolerances. 4. Check the date of manufacture on the cylinder. Cylinder must be hydrostatically tested every 10 years to the test pressure indicated on the nameplate 30 bar (435 psi). Replace extinguishing agent with new agent at time of hydrotest. 5. Visually inspect the pressure gauge: a. if bent, damaged or improper gauge, depressurize and replace. b. if pressure is low, check for leaks. c. working pressure is 15 bar (218 psi) if overcharged, reduce to 15 bar (218 psi). 6. Inspect the Footstand (base). If cracked or broken, replace with proper Footstand. 7. Check ring pin for freedom of movement by breaking the seal and removing the pin. Replace the ring pin if bent or if removal is difficult. 8. Inspect discharge lever for dirt or corrosion which might impair freedom of movement. Inspect carrying handle for proper installation. If lever, handle or rivets are damaged or distorted, replace with proper manufacturer s part(s). 9. Remove hose/wand/nozzle assembly. Inspect hose gasket (O-ring), hose, and nozzle assembly for damage; replace as necessary. Blow air through hose, wand and nozzle to insure passage is clear of foreign material. 10. Inspect the valve assembly for corrosion or damage to hose thread connections. Replace valve assembly or component parts as necessary following the proper depressurization and recharge procedures. 11. Install hose and wand assembly. 12. Install new visual seal and record service data on the extinguisher inspection tag. 13. Rehang the extinguisher on the wall hanger bracket making sure that it fits the hanger bracket properly replace the bracket if necessary.
RECHARGE Page 6 RECHARGE Recharging is the replacement of the extinguishing agent and also includes the expellant for this type of extinguisher.! CAUTION a. Before attempting to recharge, be sure this extinguisher is completely depressurized. b. Use a REGULATED pressurizing source (nitrogen). Set the regulator no more than 1.7 bar (25 psi) higher than the gauge operating pressure. c. Check and calibrate regulator gauge at frequent intervals. The regulator gauge should be used to determine when the intended charging pressure has been reached. Do not use the extinguisher gauge for this purpose. d. Never leave an extinguisher connected to a regulator of a high pressure source for an extended period of time. A defective regulator could cause the cylinder to rupture due to excessive pressure. 9. Check the collar, gauge, air pressurizing valve, cylinder welds and valve orifice for leaks using leak detection fluid or a solution of soapy water. Remove leak detection fluid from the valve assembly by blowing out with air and wipe exterior of the extinguisher to dry. 10. Install hose and nozzle/wand assembly. 11. Install ring pin with ring facing front of the extinguisher. Install new visual seal. Record recharge date and attach new recharge tag. 12. Weigh assembled extinguisher and confirm that the total weight is within the allowable tolerances indicated in the Maintenance section on the extinguisher nameplate (label). 1. Complete the Maintenance Service Procedure, Items 1 through Discharge all remaining pressure and wet chemical, making sure that there is no remaining air pressure. 3. Remove the valve assembly. Disassemble by removing downtube assembly (use a wrench on the brass retainer, not the plastic tube), spring and valve stem from the valve assembly. Remove the collar O-ring from the valve assembly. Remove hose assembly. 4. Thoroughly rinse all parts with clean water and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Blow the valve out with air or nitrogen. Inspect the collar O-ring, valve stem and spring replace parts if worn or damaged. Inspect the downtube. If it is cracked or deformed replace with proper downtube (see Parts List). Inspect downtube O-ring; replace if necessary. 5. Rinse the cylinder with clean water and inspect the interior. 6. Slowly pour 6 L (1.6 gal) of agent into the extinguisher. Note: Extinguisher contains a fill tube; therefore, extinguisher will be correctly filled when agent starts to overflow from top of collar. 7. Install valve assembly to the cylinder and properly align.! CAUTION Hand-tighten the valve collar nut to 50 Nm (442.5 In.-Lbs.) maximum. Overtightening with a wrench will damage the valve. 8. Install pressurizing adaptor into valve outlet port. Pressurize extinguisher with 15 bar (218 psi) of nitrogen.
TROUBLESHOOTING Page 7 TROUBLESHOOTING! CAUTION Determine the source of a leak before the extinguisher is depressurized. THE EXTINGUISHER MUST BE COMPLETELY DEPRESSURIZED BEFORE ANY ATTEMPT IS MADE TO DEVALVE IT AND CORRECT ANY LEAKAGE PROBLEM. To depressurize hold the extinguisher in an inverted position and slowly squeeze the discharge handle. Some liquid remaining in the downtube will be discharged so care should be taken in the area used for depressurization. Thoroughly clean all valve parts after depressurization and valve removal. PROBLEM CORRECTIVE ACTION 1. Leak at collar O-ring. 1. Remove valve assembly, clean collar (knurled) nut thoroughly and install new O-ring. 2. Leak through valve. 2. Install new valve stem assembly.
