5 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /1 1. Overview The mti085 Temperature Indicator is used to display the temperature values of CMCIEL onewire temperature sensors. Up to 128 temperature sensors can be displayed. The device includes 4 alarm set points, 2 low and 2 high, for each temperature sensor. The mti085 directly communicates with up to 4 mbc081 Bus Converters. Each mbc081 can connect with up to 32 temperature sensors. Communications between the mti085 and mbc081 is Modbus RTU over RS485. The mbc081 handles the one-wire bus communications and provides the raw sensor data to the mti085. The mti085 conditions the raw data for display and manages the high/low alarm system. A second Modbus port is provided to connect the mti085 to a host computer or PLC over RS232. The MTI085 is a Modbus Slave and appears as a simple PLC to the Modbus Master. Register mapping and sensor scaling are included in the mti085. To facilitate setup of the mti085 and the attached mbc081 s a menu driven setup system is provided. A list of connected device serial numbers as well as scaling factors and register mapping are available.

To lock the mti085 keyboard press and hold the LOCK key for 10 seconds or until the LOCK lamp illuminates. If the LOCK lamp is illuminated continuously and the operator keyboard does not function, the keyboard has been locked. Pressing and holding the LOCK key for 10 seconds will unlock the keyboard. Low capacitance twisted pair cable is recommended. The cable should be sized to ensure voltage drop on the power conductors does not reduce the avaible input voltage below the bus converter s supply voltage supply voltage specifications. Using the mti085 Temperature Interface The interface has an easy to use keyboard for selecting and controlling the connected distributors. 4.1 Sensor Selection The mbc081 can display up to 128 remote temperature sensors. The upper UP/DOWN keys select which sensor is being displayed. The right keys increment and decrement the sensor selection by 1. The left keys increment and decrement the sensor selection by 10. The upper display indicates which sensor is being displayed. The status indicators next to the display show the alarm status of the selected sensor. If all four alarm status lamps are illuminated, the sensor is not responding and the temperature value displayed will be If a sensor serial number is not programmed for the selected sensor, the temperature display will indicate The ACK Key The acknowledge key turns off any alarm outputs currently energized. The outputs will remain off until a new alarm is declared. The alarm status bits in the MODBUS Slave register map are unaffected by this key. 4.3 The C / F Key This key toggles the temperature display between Fahrenheit and Celsius. 4.4 The SET key If a report printer is connected and enabled, pressing this key will print a list of all configured sensors including their status and process values. The current alarm print session will be automatically terminated and the paper advanced to a new page. Alarm printing will automatically resume after the listing is complete. 4.5 The LOCK Key If a report printer is attached and enabled, pressing this key will terminate the current print session and advance to paper to the next page. The LOCK key locks the mti085 keyboard preventing un-authorized operation. Pressing and holding the LOCK key for 10 seconds will lock the keyboard. The LOCK indicator will illuminate when the keyboard is locked. Pressing and holding the LOCK key for 10 seconds will unlock the keyboard. 4.6 The SETUP Key The SETUP key allows entry to the setup menu system. See Section 5 Setup for complete details.

13 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /9 5. Setup The mti085 is configured using a menu driven setup system. The operator keyboard changes function during setup. This section will describe the setup of the mti Overview of System Setup Each Bus Converter connected to the mti085 has parameters that control its operation. These parameters are stored in non-volatile memory at each converter. These parameters can be modified using the keyboard of the mti085. The mti085 can also store in its internal nonvolatile memory, a copy of the parameters from each Bus Converter. Upon completion of setup, including the setup of the Bus Converters, it is recommended that the parameter tables from the converters be retrieved and stored in the mti085. If this is step is completed, a replacement Bus Converter can be easily reprogrammed from the mti Setup Keyboard Functions To enter setup mode, press and hold the SETUP key for 10 seconds. The upper display will show SEt, indicating entry into setup mode. 14 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /10 ID Label Description of Operation 1 Upper Display Array Displays the setup menu item. 2 Upper UP / DOWN Selects the setup menu item. 3 Lower Display Array Displays the setup value. For value entries, the flashing cursor indicates which digit is being acted on. 4 Lower UP /DOWN For YES/no menu items the right up arrow key is YES and the right down arrow key is no. For value entries, there is a flashing cursor indicating which digit is being advanced. The left up/down arrow keys move the cursor left and right. The right up/down arrow keys increase and decrease the value. 5 SETUP key Initially used to enter setup mode. Once in setup, this key moves back on menu. If you are in the main menu, this key is used to exit setup mode. Table 3 - Description of Setup Keys and Indicators 5.3 Setup Menus There are three levels of menus within the setup system. The keyboard operation remains the same for all of the menus. Menu items are selected using the upper right arrow keys. The SETUP key is used to move up one level in the menu tree. To exit setup, the SETUP key is pressed from the Main Menu. There are 2 typical responses to a menu item. The first is a Yes/No response. The lower right keys select YES (up arrow) and no (down arrow). The second is to modify the value displayed by the menu item. The lower arrow keys serve 2 functions when modifying values. The left arrow keys positions the flashing cursor to the digit to be modified. The right arrow keys increase or decrease the value. Any changes made to the selected items are immediate. The mti085 has non-volatile storage for the system parameters. Modifications to the parameters using the menus do not update this non-volatile storage directly. Be sure to backup any changes using the SAv function from the Main Menu before removing power from the mti085. Each time power is cycled, the mti085 restores the saved values from non-volatile memory. Any changes made will be lost if power is cycled before a SAv operation has been completed. When you exit setup, the interface automatically verifies if you have made changes to the configuration. The top display will show Ver and the bottom CrC. If unsaved changes are detected the interface will ask you to save the changes. The upper display will show SAv and the bottom display no. Press YES to save your changes and no to exit without saving. The system menus are arranged in trees. The complete menu tree is illustrated below: Main Level 1 Level 2 Description

All Main Menu items require YES/no responses. Display Function Response SEt Go to the mti085 Alarm setup menu. YES/no SnS Go to the Sensor setup menu. YES/no Get Gets the serial number table from all the Bus s on the network. A YES YES/no response displays SUrE in the lower display. The second YES response starts the operation. The upper display indicates the address and the lower display which sensor serial number is being read. All 4 bus converters are queried. Once complete, the lower display shows DonE. If a bus converter is not present on the network the lower display will indicate Snd Send the serial number table to all the Bus Converters on the network. YES/no A YES response displays SUrE in the lower display. The second YES response starts the operation. The upper display indicates the converter address and the lower display which sensor serial number is being read. All 4 bus converters are written. Once complete, the lower display shows DonE. If a bus converter is not present on the network the lower display will indicate ***************************** WARNING ********************************** This function will overwrite all of the Bus Converters serial number tables. Always execute a Get before modifying serial numbers within the mti085. This will ensure that you are editing the correct serial number tables. ***************************************************************************** dnl Download the sensor data table to a PC. This function should only be used to completely reset these tables. ***************************************************************************** YES/no

17 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /13 Display Function Response SAv rcl Save the current configuration to flash memory. The mti085 has flash memory that permanently stores its configuration tables. During power up, the mti085 automatically restores its configuration tables from flash memory. To save the current configuration tables to flash memory, press YES. A YES response to the SUrE prompt will save all configuration tables to flash memory. The lower display will indicate the progress of the operation. When the operation is completed successfully, the lower display will show done. Should the operation not complete successfully the lower display will show FAiL. If the operation fails, repeat the save. Should repeat saves fail, the flash memory is damaged and the unit should be replaced. Recall the last saved configuration tables from flash memory. During power up, the mti085 automatically restores its configuration tables from flash memory. During operation, the last saved configuration tables can be recalled from flash memory. To recall the configuration from flash memory, press YES. A YES response to the SUrE prompt will restore the mti085 configuration tables from flash memory. YES/no YES/no SEt - Set Time and Date Menu The Set menu allows configuration of the interface alarm printing functions. Two general parameters are also configured in this menu. Note the alarm time and date functions can only be set if the real time clock option has been installed in the interface. Display Function Response Mth Set the month for the real time clock day Set the day for the real time clock Yr Set the year for the real time clock hr Set the hour for the real time clock Min Set the minutes for the real time clock SAv Save the time and date to the real time clock YES/no SPd ALP Selects the baud rate for the Bus Converter communications network. Do not change this setting unless you have first modified the baud rate register in all of the connected Bus Converters. The Bus Converter baud rate register cannot be set using the mti085. An independent Modbus Master device is required to modify the Bus Converter baud rate register. The default setting is 1920 for 19,200 baud. YES indicates that alarm printing is on. 18 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /14 Display Function StC YES indicates the interface will start from power up with the units set to Celsius. If no, unit will start in Fahrenheit. Response YES/no ALC AhY YES indicates the alarm units will be Celsius. If no, the alarm units will be Fahrenheit. This value is the amount of hysteresis applied to the alarms. Alarm hysteresis prevents alarms from constantly being declared when a sensor toggles quickly between on and off. For example, if hysteresis is set to 1 and the low alarm is 10 degrees, the alarm will be declared when the sensor is 10 degrees and be released when the sensor is at 12 degrees. YES/no SnS - Sensor Setup Menu The mti085 supports up to 128 sensors on 4 Bus Converters. This menu allows the setup of each sensor. When first entered, the upper display will show the current sensor number to be modified. Use the upper UP/Down keypad to select the sensor number to be modified. Select YES on the lower keypad to enter the Sensor Setup Menu for the indicated sensor. These configuration values can be set on a PC and then uploaded to the mdi085. See Appendix 2 Editing Sensor data tables on a PC, for details on using the upload and download features. Settings made in this menu will not take effect until they are sent to the mbc081 Bus Converters using a Snd function from the Main Menu. Before modifying these values use the Main Menu Get function to retrieve the current mbc081 Bus Converter settings. This will ensure that you are modifying the currently saved serial number tables from the mbc081 Bus Converters. See the Main Menu items Get and Snd for more details. Each sensor has a unique 8-position serial number. Each of the serial number positions can be between 0 and 255. The serial number can be found on a label affixed to the cable next to the sensor. The serial number will appear as on the label as: This corresponds to the menu entries as follows: Sn1 Sn2 Sn3 Sn4 Sn5 Sn6 Sn7 Sn Serial numbers set to all 255 s will not be polled by the mbc081 Bus Converters and considered inactive. Because they are not polled they will not display any error indications and will display

The sensors low warning alarm status bit and the global low warning alarm bit and alarm contact will be set if the temperature for this sensor is equal to or less than this value. The default value is Set sensor high alarm limit. The sensors high alarm status bit and the global high alarm bit and alarm contact will be set if the temperature for this sensor is equal to or greater than this value. The default value is Set sensor high early warning alarm limit. The sensors high warning alarm status bit and the global high warning alarm bit and alarm contact will be set if the temperature for this sensor is equal to or greater than this value. The default value is Set the display offset value. The display offset is a value that will be subtracted from the raw sensor value before the value is converted for display. See DSP for the conversion formula. The default value is to to to to 4095 DSP Set the display span value. The conversion formula is: (Raw value offset) x span 128 The default value is to 4095

The offset is a value that will be subtracted from the raw sensor value before the value is converted and stored in the Modbus Slave register map. See DSP for the conversion formula. The default value is 0. Set the Modbus Slave span value. The conversion formula is: (Raw value offset) x span 128 The default value is 640. The Modbus Slave register map has 128 registers dedicated to the corrected values of the field sensors. This entry allows the modification of the register map. The converted value from the field sensor being modified will be placed in the Modbus Slave register map at the location specified by this entry. The entry corresponds to the register address, thru The default value will be 41 for sensor 1 and incremented by 1 for each remaining sensor. ***************************** Caution ************************************ Setting more than one sensor to the same map location will result in an unpredictable value appearing in the specified register. Use care when changing this map that no two sensors share the same map location. Inactive sensors do write fault information to the map and are included in this exclusion warning. ***************************************************************************** Selects the sensor to be used for differential alarms. The sensor entered, will be subtracted from this sensor before being compared for the alarms. If referential alarms are not used this value should be set to to to CtL - Bus Converter Command Menu The Bus Converter Command Menu allows for the execution of two serial number table commands at the remote Bus Converters. Each Bus Converter has a serial number table that is used to poll the field devices connected to it. There are three ways to configure the serial number table. The first is to enter the serial numbers using the Sensor Menu described earlier in this section. The second method is by entering the serial numbers into a spreadsheet on a PC and them uploading them to the mti085 and the n\bus converters. The third method is to command the Bus Converter to acquire the serial numbers of all devices present on their network. The Bus Converter will query the sensors on its sensor bus and build a serial number table sorted in ascending serial number order. The serial numbers obtained during an acquire operation are stored in flash memory at each Bus Converter. Using the acquire function is the easiest way to build the serial number tables. *********************************************************************************************************

21 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /17 The serial numbers located during an acquire will not be automatically moved to the mti085. Only the bus converters serial number table is updated. To move the bus converter s serial number table to the mti085 you must execute a Get command from the main menu. ********************************************************************************************************* The following table describes the three menu options of the Bus Converter Command Menu: Display Function Cno Select which of the 4 possible Bus Converters is to be commanded. Sensors 1 32 reside in Bus Converter 1, sensors reside in Bus Converter 2, sensors reside in Bus Converter 3 and sensors reside in Bus Converter 4. Response 1-4 ACq Acquire the serial numbers of the sensors connected to the bus converter s sensor bus. A YES response will display SUrE in the lower display. A second YES response will command the previously selected Bus Converter to acquire its serial number table. The lower display will show run while the command executes, then DonE. If the serial number table is empty when the acquire serial number command is executed, the serial numbers located will be placed in the table in ascending order. If the table contains previously located serial numbers, the bus converter will follow this sequence during an acquire; 1) All of the serial numbers currently connected to the sensor bus will be located and stored in a temporary table; 2) The temporary table will be verified against the existing table and any serial numbers from the existing table not found in the temporary table will flagged; 3) Any new serial numbers from the temporary table not found in the existing table will be placed in the existing table in ascending order starting with the first flagged location; 4) Serial number locations not required to complete the acquire, but previously occupied will remain unchanged. This method of operation allows replacement sensors to be located and added to the table without disturbing the previous table positions of the pre-existing sensors. For example if a single sensor were replaced on the network, after this command, the new sensor s serial number would appear in the same location as the one it replaced. The serial number table may not be in true ascending order after completion of an acquire command if the sensor table was not cleared prior to executing the acquire. YES/no

A second YES response will command the previously selected Bus Converter to clear its serial number table. ***************************** Caution ************************************* Executing this command will remove all existing sensors from the serial number table. The serial numbers will have to be re-acquired using the Acq command or manually entered using the Sensor Menu. ****************************************************************************** YES/no bus - Modbus Slave Interface Menu The mti085 allows remote operation and monitoring over a second Modbus Slave Interface. Modbus is an industry standard network protocol for connecting PLC and field devices. The mti085 acts as a Modbus Slave and only utilizes the RTU protocol. See Using the Modbus Network Interface for further information. Display Function Response Adr Selects the Modbus slave address. This menu allows for the diagnosis of the input ports, communications ports and keyboard. Test connectors are required to test the communications port. Once selected, energizing a supervisory input will close the corresponding supervisory output, i.e. energizing input closes output 1. Test communications port 1. 26 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /22 7. Using the Modbus Slave Interface The mti085 incorporates a Mobus Slave RTU interface for communications with a host computer or PLC. This mti085 responds to only 3 Modbus slave commands. The commands are 3 - Read Holding Registers, 6 - Write One Holding Register and 16 - Write Multiple Holding Registers. The Modbus protocol allows a maximum of 125 Register Reads and 100 Register Writes in a single transaction. The following tables provide the register assignments for the Modbus Slave Interface. 7.1 The Modbus Serial Interface The physical connection is by a RS-232 port. The unit has a DB9 female connector, wired as a DCE device. A modem or pin-to-pin cable can be used to connect the unit to a standard DTE port such as a Modbus Bridge Mux. Under normal operation a maximum of 2 alarm status bits can be set, therefore either the all alarm bits on condition, or the fault bit on, can be used to indicate a faulted sensor. The difference in the alarm bits allows the Modbus Master to determine if a sensor serial number has been programmed.

31 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual / Read Sensor Serial Number Registers The mti085 can read and write a sensors serial number from a remote mbc081 over the Modbus Slave Interface. The individual sensor serial number is read or written by first writing the required serial number identifier from 1 to 128 to register The Get Serial Number Command bit or Send Serial Number Command bit in the command register is then set. The command, identifier and in the case of a write, the serial number, can be set during the same Modbus write function. The operation is complete when the bit clears in the Command Register. The sensors serial number will be present in registers thru for a read. You must preset registers thru for a write. If the command fails to complete, writing a 0 to the Get Serial Number Command bit will reset the process. Register automatically clears to 0 after 10 seconds to prevent false writes to the serial number tables. 36 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual / Appendix 2 Editing Sensor Data Tables on a PC The mti085 can download and upload the sensor configuration tables to a PC over a standard serial port. Using software supplied as part of the Windows operating system and spreadsheet software, such as Excel, the configuration tables can be conveniently edited and sorted. The download (dnl) and upload (UPL) functions are accessed from the main menu. See Section 5 Setup for details on selecting these functions. Before starting these functions you will need the following: 1. A PC running Windows software; 2. A null-modem serial cable with a 9 pin female connector on both ends; 3. A communication software package, such as HyperTerminal that is supplied with most Windows OS distributions. The following instructions assume you are using HyperTerminal for communications and Excel for editing: 1. Setting up HyperTerminal: a. Open HyperTerminal; b. Enter the name Direct for the connection name as below then click OK; c. Select the communications port you are using and then click OK;

The settings are Bits per second , Data bits - 8, Parity - None, Stop bits -1, Flow control None; e. On some computers it may be necessary to add a short delay to each transmitted character when uploading configurations to the mti085. From the File menu in HyperTerminal, select Properties. On the next screen select the Settings tab. On the next screen click the ASCII Setup button. Set the Character delay field to 2 milliseconds and then click OK;

38 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /34 f. You will now be at the main HyperTerminal Screen. Select File and then Save and the screen below will appear. Click Save to save this configuration as Direct.ht. You can now open HyperTerminal from the Direct Icon anytime you require this connection. You are now ready to download the configuration file. 2. Enter Setup mode at the mti085; 3. Ensure your cable is connected to port J1 on the mti085 and the serial port on your PC selected above. HyperTerminal should be running and configured as above; 4. Select dnl from the Main Menu; 5. From HyperTerminals menu, click on Transfer and then Capture Text. Enter the path and file name where you want to store the configuration file as shown below. Note HyperTerminal appends data to existing files. You must delete the file each time you do a download or use a different file name. When you have completed entering the name, click Start; 6. On the mti085 press YES and the YES again to the SurE prompt. The mti085 will begin dumping the configuration file to HyperTerminal. When the transfer is complete, the mti085 will show done and your PC screen will appear as:

You have now created a.txt file containing the configuration data. 8. Open Excel and select File and then Open. You will have to change the type of file to open in the highlighted dialog box as shown below. You want to open files of type.txt. Once you have selected file type.txt, select your data file and then click Open.

40 mti085 Temperature Interface Technical Manual /36 9. Excel will display a data import dialog. The data from the mti085 is pre-formatted to be automatically imported into Excel. Just click Finish to import the data. 10. Adjust the width of column A so you can see the entire serial number. Edit the data as required. A sample of an Excel spreadsheet is shown below. The columns correspond directly with the menu prompts from the SnS menu. Column A contains all 8 of the serial numbers, Sn1 Sn8. Column L can only be modified using the download/upload feature. It contains a text name for each sensor that is printed by the alarm printing system. The text name can be up to 10 characters long and can contain any printable ASCII character including spaces. When re-ordering the serial numbers, remember that a sensor must physically reside on the sensor bus for the bus converter where you have placed its serial number. Sensors 1-32 are on converter 1, on converter 2, on converter 3 and on converter 4. Be sure to respect these boundaries when re-ordering the serial number table.

Excel will prompt you to change the type of file when you save or exit, as it defaults to the.xls file format. Always answer to not change format of the file. The screen sample below shows a typical dialog. Note you must click on Yes at this dialog to save your file as a.txt file. 12. To upload the file to the mti085, select UPL from the main menu of the mti085. HyperTerminal should be open and the cable connected.
