1 INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR RIKEN PORTABLE TOXIC GAS MONITOR Special Cautions Please read this instruction manual before any operation. * This instrument is not designed for the explosion proof. * Avoid hard mechanical impact to the unit since high-precision components are used in this unit. * Do not leave or store the unit in high temperature or humidity environments. Do not expose the unit to the direct rays of sun, (such as inside of closed cars), or leave the unit near heaters. It may cause a change in color, or the malfunction. * Carry out the auto calibration and the gas calibration in the fresh air. * If the electrical noise is given in the operating environment and also the hard impact is given, it may be happened that the indication is unstable or that the abnormal indication is displayed. In this case, turn the power switch OFF. And then, re-turn the power switch ON. * Check whether the filter of the gas sampling probe is dirt or not periodically. 2 This instrument is a portable gas monitor to measure a toxic special gas in air for safety purpose and not designed to be an analyzer and densitometer for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Before use, it is needed to understand the followings and requested to operate the instrument correctly. 1. Be sure to make warming-up of instrument for 3 5 minutes before use. 2. This instrument shall be subject to cross gases such as solvent vapors etc except measuring gas and the reading may vary by the environmental change of operational site. 3. The maintenance service is needed to maintain the instrument including a regular maintenance parts replacement in the manual. It is recommended to receive the frequency of every 6 months maintenance service. For this service, contact Riken Keiki Japan or its nearest Riken authorized service agent. To help your safety and effective operation in the manual, the following marks are applied herewith. 4 2-1. Preparation 2. Operation Fig-1 Knurling 1) After connecting the gas sampling probe and the sampling hose, connect the other end of the sampling hose to the gas inlet 10 (with the indication of GAS IN ) at the end of the instrument. Fig-2 2) The knurled part at the end of the gas sampling hose is designed to be quick-fit to the instrument. Then, see the following figure. a) Hold the knurled part at the end of the gas sampling hose with your fingers and pull it to the arrow mark. (See Fig-1) Fig-3 Open ring b) The knurled part left pulled as above (See Fig-2) is inserted in the direction of the arrow mark until it clicks into place at the depth. Next, release the flingers holding the knurled part from it ; then, it is locked to the instrument. 本 体 Go in Pull hose to you by pushing open ring to front. c) When disconnecting the gas sampling hose from the instrument, it can be simply disconnected from the instrument by operating it according to the reverse procedure. d) In case of the instrument for HCL, HF, NH3 or CL2, connect the gas sampling hose directly to gas inlet nipple of the instrument.(see Fig-3) In case of removal of the gas sampling hose from the instrument, disconnect it by pushing the coupler of gas inlet to the arrow mark. 3
5 2-2. Self diagnosis and normal measurement When the connection of the gas sampling hose finishes, press the power switch ON/OFF 9 for a few seconds under the fresh atmosphere. As the power switch can be reciprocally turned on and off. ON and OFF are repeated each time when the switch is pressed. Upon setting the power switch at ON, carry out the battery check, the sensor connection check and the zero point adjustment automatically by the built-in microprocessor works in accordance with following procedure. 1) Checking the battery voltage Message 1 LCD display BATT. : MIN. V Buzzer tone Approx. 6 seconds Message 2 (for example) Message 3 BATT. :. V CHANGE BATTERY Approx. 6 seconds Continuously Upon setting the power switch at ON, the lowest battery voltage with which the battery can be used is indicated. (Message 1) Next, the present battery voltage is indicated. (Message 2) When the indicated value of the battery voltage is lower than the specified voltage, the alarm light turns on continuously, the buzzer sounds continuously and the program stops at the position concerned. (Message 3) In this case, replace the battery (when alkaline batteries are used) with new ones, or charge them (when the Ni-Cd batteries of the optional accessories are use). Caution When turn off the power may be displayed but this is not a trouble. The same may be displayed when repeat the operation of power on/off. In this case, when let it leave for over 10 seconds after turning on or hold pressing ON/OFF (power switch) continuously, this recovers to the normal display. 2) Checking the connection of the sensor 4
6 For standard (except B2H6) For B2H6 Message 4 SELF DIAGNOSIS Message 5 (approx 12 sec.) Message 6 FAIL SENSOR Message 6 WARMING U P FAIL SENSOR (approx 102 sec.) (Intermittently) Since the SC-90 for B2H6 needs warm up time, message of SC-90 for B2H6 is different from that of SC-90 for standard (Message 5) If the sensor is abnormally connected, the alarm light 7 turns on and the buzzer sounds continuously, (Message 6) Check whether the sensor is connected or not. This model SC-90 is carrying out the checking for the connection of sensor during measurement. If the message 6 FAIL SENSOR appears on the display, please contact our agent or RIKEN KEIKI. 3) Zero adjustment under the fresh atmospheric air (Intermittently) Message 7 AUTO ZERO/SPAN approx 6 seconds Message 8 STAND BY approx 3 seconds Message 9 (Example) 0.00 PPM When the power switch is turned to ON under the fresh atmospheres carry out the zero adjustment automatically. Next, the message 8 appears. But, there is happening that 0.00PPM as like the message 8 doesn t appear by the influence of environment temperature. In this case, make the indication adjustment to 0.00PPM under the environment by pressing ZERO switch 6 for approx 3 seconds. When the message 8 appears, start to measure. 4) Display of gas concentration The gas concentration being measured (ppm) presently is continuously displayed (Message 8). When the gas concentration exceeds the specified alarm concentration, the alarm light 5
7 7 flashes and the buzzer sounds intermittently that the gas concentration enters dangerous zone. When the gas concentration becomes below the specified alarm concentration, the alarm light turns off automatically, and also the buzzer sound stops automatically by the non-latched function. When the gas concentration exceeds the specified over scale, the message OVER PPM appears on the display 5. Note : There is the condition that the zero point moves by the temperature and the humidity for long operation. In this case, carry out the zero adjustment by pressing ZERO switch 6 after the confirmation of no existence of gas at measuring place. 6
8 2-3. Measurement of average readings In addition to the normal measurement (continuous measurement), this instrument can measure the average readings since the last time the SC-90 was turned on. Perform this measurement according to the following procedure. 1) Press the average readout switch AVG 2 in measuring condition. The following message is displayed. Average Elapsed time up to the present ( M means minute.) AVG. ( M) Press the average readout switch AVG 2 when the reading of average value is necessary. The average readout value is displayed for 5 seconds. When the time passes through 5 seconds, the display returns to the measuring condition automatically. And then, if this switch is re-pressed within 5 seconds since the average readout value is displayed, the display returns to the measuring condition. Caution The average value is displayed after renewing to the up-dated gas concentration from power on 2-4. Measurement of peak readings 1) This is the peak reading since the last time the SC-90 was turned on. The peak leading is limit to 5 seconds. Press the PEAK switch 1. The following message appears. Peak value PEAK. ( M) Elapsed time up to the present ( M means minute.) The display is returned to the indication of normal measurement after passing 5 seconds or PEAK switch 1 is pressed within 5 seconds. Caution The renewed value is always displayed while peak reading is displayed 7

10 Caution After having detected high absorption gas such as HCl, NH3 etc, have a fresh air sucked into instrument for 2 3 minutes in the fresh air for making the cleaning inside of the instrument and pipe Check of battery voltage 1) Check up the battery voltage by depressing BATT switch 3 in continuous measurement. The following message appears on depressing the switch. Battery voltage BATT. :. V Note When the battery voltage gets lower during the operation, the code B shall be displayed on the left side of LCD. Though available still to measure, replace the batteries with new ones at the earliest. B 0.00 PPM 3. Alarm action Any of the following alarms can be discriminated from the red light and buzzer. Type of alarm Alarm of gas concentration (The value of gas concentration exceeds the alarm preset level.) OVER scale alarm Low battery alarm (When battery capacity gets below 4.6V) Buzzer LED Buzzer Patterns of alarms LED LCD display OVER PPM Buzzer LED (Intermittent tone) (Flashing light) (Continuous tone) (Light on) (Continuous tone) (Light on) 9

Power supply This instrument can be powered with either of alkaline batteries (4 pcs) or Ni-Cd batteries (4 pcs, option) Replacement of battery (In case of alkaline batteries) : When the alkaline batteries are used, the CHANGE BATTERY appears on the display and the low battery alarm (continuous sound of buzzer) comes out, replace alkaline batteries with new ones in the following procedure. 1) Check that the power switch is in the position of OFF. 2) Remove the battery cover at the bottom of the instrument. 3) Take out the old batteries and put new batteries correctly into it paying attention to the polarity which is marked at the inlet of the battery case. (See Fig. 4) 4) When the replacement of the battery is finished, close the battery cover. 10
12 (Fig. 4) Caution l When replacing batteries, do not use new batteries mixed with the used one. l The alkaline batteries should be used with the same type of the same manufacturer. l Replace with new batteries after power switch is turned OFF immediately when the low battery alarm comes out Recharge (In case of Ni-Cd batteries : option) When Ni-Cd batteries are used, the CHANGE BATTERY appears on the display and the low battery alarm (continuous sound of buzzer) comes out, charge the Ni-Cd batteries in the following procedure. 1) Remove Ni-Cd batteries from the instrument as done in the same procedure with the dry batteries. 2) Proceed to charge the Ni-Cd batteries.. 3) Take off Ni-Cd batteries out from the charger after the recharging is completed and mount it to the charger paying attention to the polarity. This battery polarity is illustrated in the battery inlet port. 4) After this mounting is completed, proceed to close the battery cover. Caution l As this over-charge(excess charge) may damage the Ni-Cd battery and deteriorate its life, keep them from the over-charging. l During the charging of Ni-Cd battery, mount the replacement battery for the sensor back up of instrument. 11

14 5. Various Functions This instrument is equipped with the following various types of functions Output for recorder When this instrument is used with the recorder connected thereto, connect the recorder to the jack (marked with REC) for connecting the recorder at the left side. Output range is 0 ~1V DC (each gas 0~F.S.) 5-2. Self-illuminating light in dark place The display unit of this instrument will illuminate automatically from inside of it as the surroundings get dark. So that, the indicated values can be read out even in dark place. The instrument is put out automatically as the surrounding get light. 6. Maintenance and In order to use this instrument accurately and stably for a long time, check periodically the following items. 1) Carry out the sensitivity adjustment by use of the calibration gas once per 6 months. 2) Check from time to time whether there is a crack, hole or the like in the gas sampling hose. 3) Check that there is no filter dirt inside of gas sampling probe and gas sampling hose. When it gets dirty, replace it with new one. 4) Check from time to time whether the gas is normally drawn in. It can be easily checked by putting a finger of your hand close to the gas outlet port. 5) When the specified sensitivity can not be obtained even by doing the gas sensitivity adjustment, it means the life of the sensor. So replace it with anew one. 6) As the detection principle of this instrument is based on the electrochemical method, it is necessary to keep the constant voltage applied to the sensor at all times. (Even when the power switch is in the position of OFF, a constant voltage is applied to the sensor. So, battery may consume up for 2-3 months. 13

Standard warranty RIKEN KEIKI CO., LTD. warrants gas alarm equipment manufactured and sold by us to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year from date of shipment from RIKEN KEIKI CO., LTD. Any parts found defective within that period will be repaired or replaced, at our option, free of charge, F.O.B. Factory. This warranty does not apply to those items which by their nature are subject to deterioration or consumption in normal service, and which must be cleaned, repaired or replaced on a routine basis. Such items may include : a) Lamp bulbs and fuses b) Pump diaphragms and valves c) Absorbent cartridges d) Filter elements e) Batteries f) Most catalytic and electrochemical sensors are covered by a separate warranty of 12 months. Warranty is voided by abuse including rough handling, mechanical damage, operation, alteration or repair procedures not in accordance with instruction manual. This warranty indicates the full extent of our liability, and we are not responsible for removal or replacement costs, local repair costs, transportation costs, or contingent expenses incurred without our prior approval. THIS WARRNTY IS EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ANY AND ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND REPRESENTATIONS, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AND ALL OTHER OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITIES ON THE PART OF RIKEN KEIKI CO., LTD. INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL RIKEN KEIKI CO., LTD.
