1 Eureka Springs Fire & EMS 144 East Van Buren Avenue Eureka Springs, AR (479) End of the Year Summary Highlights of the year: --Eureka Springs Fire & EMS celebrated 130 years of service in The department held an open house to welcome members of the community. The department had presentations, fire trucks on display, and food for the public to enjoy. --Eureka Springs Rural purchased property on Highway 23 South near Hillspeak Road to build a new volunteer fire station. This will be Station #7 and is being placed to cover the gap between the city fire stations and the next closest facility located in the Buck Mountain area. --The fire department hosted another successful first responder conference. Despite winter weather the 2013 Midwest First Responder Conference was a hit once again. The staff is gearing up for another great conference in February of During the year three members of the department; Josh Beyler, Christian FitzPatrick, and James Cowan completed Firefighter I & II as accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. This is the highest level of firefighter available in Arkansas. --Darrell Backs completed North Ark College s paramedic program. He is now a licensed Paramedic with the National Registry of Paramedics and the State of Arkansas. --The Arkansas Forestry Commission assisted Eureka Springs Rural fire with obtaining a brush truck and a tanker. Both vehicles are built on military chassis and were obtained at less than half the cost of a new such vehicle. --Assistant Chief Bob Pettus headed up an EMT class during the spring. Eight students successfully graduated the class and became certified EMTs. --Fire station #1 obtained a military grade generator to power the administration offices in the event of a power failure. Eureka Springs Fire & EMS 2013 End of the Year Summary Page 1
2 --Arkansas Trauma Systems awarded a $1,400 grant to the fire department for the purchase of medical gear. --Eureka Springs Rural funded a new radio repeater to serve as a back-up to the primary channel. It also serves as the primary repeater for the department s secondary channel. The new repeater is digital capable. --The fire department hosts monthly CPR classes for the public and continues to instruct at varies levels including pediatric, healthcare provider, and lay person CPR. --Firefighters from Eureka Springs have been active in continuing education. Assistant Chief Tom Dransfield and Captain Jason Morris served as instructors for the Arkansas Hazardous Materials Weekend sponsored by Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Firefighters also attended training on bomb response and additional hazardous response issue. Springdale Fire Department shared instructors with the department and presented an enlightening class on modern firefighting hazards. --Eureka Springs Fire & EMS played host for a number of classes including the Arkansas Fire Academy s regional instructor update, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management s basic and advanced monitoring classes, and hazardous materials chemistry. --Volunteers and EMS crews provided stand-by medical crews for the popular Eurekan sporting event. The department received high praise from the organizers and visitors for their visibility and participation. --Eureka Springs Police Department arranged for the fire department to acquire one of their used squad cars. The patrol car is used to send crews to training at other departments and to the Arkansas Fire Academy. --The fire department s visibility and community interaction increased in 2013 thanks to a comprehensive fire prevention program, the appointment of an experienced Public Information Officer, a frequently updated Facebook page, the department s growing web site, a rural Fire Wise program, and through the Fire Marshal s inspections and assistance.
