1 SECTION FIRE PROTECTION 1. GENERAL A. Provisions of Division 1, GENERAL REQUIREMENTS, and Section , MECHANICAL GENERAL CONDITIONS, and Section , SEISMIC PROTECTION are a part of this Section whether attached hereto or not. 2. DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. This contractor shall furnish all required labor, materials, equipment and services necessary to provide a complete fire protection system inside the building as hereinafter described, including the open ceiling plenums, as required. B. It is intended that this specification shall describe a working installation complete in every detail, and all items necessary for such complete installation shall be furnished and installed whether specifically mentioned or not. C. All components of the systems described shall meet the requirements as stated herein and shall be approved by the Architect and Consultant. D. Under the Base bid, provide a complete sprinkler system that will have sprinklers in all areas including but not necessarily limited to the Showroom, Offices, Parts Storage, Service Bays, Tech Break Room, Toilet Rooms, etc. E. This contractor shall extend the fire mains located outside the building into all of the new areas. The sprinkler contractor shall provide zoned risers as required by area or fire wall requirements. F. Furnish all labor, services, material and related items necessary to complete the fire protection work indicated on the drawings and/or specified herein. Work to be performed shall include, but not be limited to the following items: 1) Furnish and install all underground piping complete with connection to the main in the street and extension into the building mechanical room. 2) Furnish and install all bulk, crossmain and branch line piping as required for a complete fire protection system as shown on the drawings or required by the building codes and NFPA #13. G. All work shall be installed in accordance with the latest edition of the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet #13 and shall meet the requirements of the Owner, the City of Jefferson Fire Marshal and the municipal Department of Building Regulations. H. All materials and equipment under this section of the specifications shall be approved by Factory Mutual and Underwriter's Laboratories for fire protection systems installation. I. It is intended that this specification shall describe a working installation complete in every detail, and all items necessary for such complete installation shall be furnished and installed whether specifically mentioned or not. J. This Contractor's work shall extend from the exterior main in the street and into the building as indicated on drawings. 3. MATERIALS A. All material and equipment furnished shall be listed by Underwriter's Laboratories, Inc. as approved for the fire protection services and installed in accordance with the recommendations of the specific manufacturer. 2 4. SHOP DRAWINGS A. Complete shop drawings are to be submitted to the aforementioned agencies for their approval. Copies of these approved drawings are to be submitted to the Engineer for their approval prior to starting work. B. Sprinkler shop drawings and hydraulic calculations shall bear the seal and signature of a registered professional engineer for the state in which the work takes place. C. Shop drawings shall be submitted to all local authorities, *the state elevator safety division, and the Owner's insurance carrier, Architect and Engineer prior to fabrication and the start of work. D. No work shall be concealed where it is inaccessible unless inspected and approved by the authorities having jurisdiction. E. The system shall not be accepted until final testing and receipt of the Contractor's Material and Test Certificate, Part "A" General. F. Submit shop drawings as required by Section for the following equipment and/or materials: 5. DESIGN 1) Valves - control 2) Water flow switch 3) Piping and fittings 4) Sprinkler heads 5) Pipe specialties (Fire Department connection, etc.) 6) Spare sprinkler head cabinet 7) Inspector's test connection A. The following densities have been established by NFPA #13 and shall be used in the design and hydraulic calculation. This contractor shall include a safety factor as required by the authority having jurisdiction. B. All areas of the offices, public toilet rooms, public use areas, except storage areas, including private offices, break rooms, shall be provided with 0.1 GPM per square foot over the most remote 1,500 square feet. (Light hazard spacing and area limitations.) Plus 100 GPM for hose streams to be added at base of riser. C. All storage, mechanical rooms, etc., shall be provided with 0.15 GPM per square foot over the most remote 2,000 square feet. (Ordinary Hazard spacing and area limitations.) Plus 250 GPM for hose streams to be added at base of riser. D. Water pressure data at the site shall be verified by conducting a water flow test. It shall be the responsibility of the Sprinkler Contractor to conduct a flow test to verify the water pressure data at the site. Also, Insurance Service Office shall be contacted to determine static and residual deficiencies for this area. E. The information given herein and on the plans is as exact as could be secured for bidding purposes, but its accuracy is not guaranteed. This Subcontractor must examine the job conditions and verify all measurements, distances, elevations, clearances, pipe sizes, etc., before starting his work. F. The Contractor shall provide all necessary offsets, raises or drops in piping and auxiliary drains required by building conditions whether or not shown on the plans. FIRE PROTECTION
3 G. Piping is to be held as high as possible and maintain natural drainage back to the main system risers whenever possible. 6. COORDINATION AND PIPE SIZING A. Pipe sizes and routing, and exact sprinkler location shall be based on hydraulic calculation and spacing requirements. This Contractor shall be responsible for total coordination of the reflected ceiling plan using the engineered HVAC, electrical and architectural plans. 7. OVERHEAD PIPE AND FITTINGS A. Feed mains and standpipes shall be thinwall steel pipe designed to withstand a working pressure of not less than 175 psi. B. Cross mains and branch lines shall be standard weight black steel pipe or approved equivalent such as copper tube or thinwall steel pipe designed to withstand a working pressure of not less than 175 psi. C. Fittings shall be 175 psi screwed or flanged black cast iron or approved equivalent such as mechanical groove or welded construction. D. Piping is to be held as high as possible where exposed. E. Wet system pipe may be installed level as per NFPA # AUXILIARY DRAINS A. Auxiliary drains consisting of plugs, or globe valves and plugs where capacity of trapped pipe section exceeds five gallons, shall be provided to drain all points in the system that cannot be drained back to a main riser. 9. INSPECTOR'S TEST CONNECTION A. Furnish and install inspector's test connections for the system as indicated in the drawings. Test connections are to consist of a 1" diameter pipe having a 1" globe valve not more than 7`-0" above the floor terminating with a 1/2" smooth bore, corrosion resistant outlet. An integral relief valve is required for gridded systems. 10. UNDERGROUND PIPING A. All underground piping to a point 5`-0" beyond exterior wall shall be installed in accordance with the latest edition of NFPA #24, "Standard for Outside Protection". 11. EXTERIOR PIPING A. All underground piping shall be installed in accordance with the latest edition of NFPA #24, "Standard for Outside Protection". B. Underground pipe shall be ductile iron with cast iron Class 150 fitting with approved Class 150 fittings. C. All bends and tees are to be adequately supported with thrust blocks to prevent rupture of joints due to movement of Pipe. D. All underground piping shall be flushed in accordance with NFPA #24. The underground shall be flushed while flowing the required GPM for a sufficient time to ensure thorough cleaning. Flushing shall be witnessed by an authorized representative of the Engineer and shall require advance notice of 24 hours. FIRE PROTECTION
4 E. All underground piping shall be tested in accordance with NFPA #24 and NFPA #13. Contractor's Material and Test Certificate, Part "A" General and Part "B" Underground Piping as shown on NFPA #13 shall be completed and submitted to the Engineer. The test shall be witnessed by an authorized representative of the Engineer. (ALSO SEE "TESTING".) 12. HANGERS AND SLEEVES A. All hangers to be of approved materials and spaced in accordance with NFPA #13. B. Sleeves shall be set for all pipes passing through concrete floors, foundations and masonry walls. C. Provide primered escutcheon plates at all wall penetrations. D. See Section , BASIC MATERIALS AND METHODS, for requirements on inserts and sleeves in both new and existing construction. 13. VALVES, SUPERVISORY SWITCHES AND FIRE ALARM PANEL A. Control valves inside buildings shall be 175 psi working pressure approved indicating type valve. B. Check valves shall be 175 psi working pressure horizontal swing check valves or approved equivalent such as wafer checks. C. Drain and test valves shall be 175 psi working pressure, bronze threaded globe valves with renewable composition disc. D. All valves on the sprinkler system shall be supervised. Valve switches to be furnished and installed by the Sprinkler Contractor and wired by the Electrical Contractor to the fire alarm control panel. Valve supervisory switches shall be Potter or approved equal. 14. SPRINKLERS A. Furnish and install where shown on the drawings the following symbol types of sprinklers: 1) Type 1: Equal to Reliable Model G4A Quick Response Concealed sprinkler head, style: concealed with color to match ceiling tile, 1/2" discharge orifice and 155EF temperature link shall be installed as indicated on plans. 2) Type 2: Equal to Reliable Model F1FR Quick Response sprinkler head, style: horizontal sidewall with HSW 1 deflector and 1/2" discharge office, 155EF temperature link, chrome head with chrome type escutcheon shall be installed as indicated on plans. 3) Type 3: Equal to Reliable Model F1FR Quick Response sprinkler head, style: upright with 1/2" discharge orifice, 155EF temperature link, brass upright head shall be installed as indicated on plans. 4) Type 4: Equal to Reliable Model F1FR/F2 Quick Response sprinkler head, style: pendent with 1/2" discharge orifice, 155EF temperature link, chrome pendent head shall be installed as indicated on plans. B. Sprinkler guards are to be provided on all sprinklers located less than 7'-0" from finished floor and where subject to mechanical injury. C. High temperature sprinklers of proper degree rating shall be installed in boiler room, FIRE PROTECTION
5 storage areas or where necessary. D. Furnish and install at the system riser a twelve-head sprinkler cabinet stocked with a sprinkler head wrench and twelve extra sprinklers. The types and temperature of extra sprinklers to be in proportion to those installed on the system. E. Sprinkler heads shall be provided in all rooms, closets, etc., no matter how small the room size. 15. BACKFLOW PREVENTER A. Provide where shown on drawings a U/L listed double gate valve, double check valve assembly backflow preventer. Gate valves to be O.S.&Y. type. Unit to be Ames, Febco, Hershey or Watts, equal to Watts Model # FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION A. Furnish and install a free standing fire department connection as required, including check valve with 1/2" automatic ball drip valve to serve sprinkler system. B. Fire department connection shall be equal to Potter Roemer Model #5751, exposed 4" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" cast brass body and polished brass finished complete with escutcheon plate, plugs and chains and lettered "AUTO-SPKR". Threads shall conform to the local/municipal Fire Department Standards. 17. WATER FLOW SWITCHES A. Vane water flow detectors shall be installed as required in these specifications. B. The detectors shall be mounted in accordance with their listing and the manufacturer's instructions. They shall be designed to signal any flow of water that equals or exceeds 10 GPM. Detector switch mechanism shall incorporate an instantly recycling mechanical retard element with an adjustable range of 0 to 60 seconds. Two single pole, double throw switches shall be provided suitable for operation on 24-volt D.C. or 110-volt A.C. Detectors shall be of dust tight construction. Detector switch enclosure shall be tamperproof. C. The detectors shall be furnished and installed by the Sprinkler Contractor and be wired complete by the Electrical Contractor to local fire district alarm service. 18. SIGNS A. Approved enameled metal signs shall be securely attached at the main drain, auxiliary drains, inspector's test connections, control valves and electric alarm bell. B. Signs shall be provided at the main riser to indicate the hydraulic design criteria for the system and the system demand at the base of the riser. 19. TESTING A. The entire automatic sprinkler system shall be tested in the presence of an authorized representative of the Engineer and the governing agencies having jurisdiction for approval. Advance notice of 24 hours is required. B. All interior sprinkler piping shall be tested hydrostatically at not less than 200 psi for two (2) hours in accordance with NFPA #13. Interior sprinkler piping shall be installed in such a manner that there will be no visible signs of leakage for the duration of the hydrostatic pressure test. C. The Contractor's Material and Test Certificate as shown in NFPA #13 must be completed FIRE PROTECTION
6 and submitted to the Engineer before final approval may be given. D. Preliminary testing procedures shall be conducted as mentioned above to assure proper operation when the final testing is performed. 20. MAIN DRAIN A. The sprinkler system main drain test shall discharge outside of the building, onto grade. Provide a concrete splash block. END OF SECTION FIRE PROTECTION
