1 SECTION WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Standard-Pressure Sprinkler Piping: Wet-pipe sprinkler system piping designed to operate at working pressure of 175 psig maximum. 1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS A. Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply through alarm valve. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

Contractor shall provide a complete new hydraulically calculated automatic wet-pipe sprinkler system including backflow preventor, department connection and sprinkler header in Tool Storage 161 of University Services Annex. 1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Standard-Pressure Piping System Component: Listed for 175-psig minimum working pressure. B. Sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Margin of Safety for Available Water Flow and Pressure: 15 psi including losses through water-service piping, valves, and backflow preventers. C. Wet sprinkler system design shall be approved by the authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Available fire-hydrant flow test records indicate the following conditions: a. Date: 09/14/2010, City of Harrisonburg b. Location of Residual Fire Hydrant R: 24-U c. Location of Flow Fire Hydrant F: 24-Q d. Static Pressure at Residual Fire Hydrant R: 104 psig. e. Total Combined Hose-Stream Demand Requirement: According to NFPA 13 unless otherwise indicated: a. Light-Hazard Occupancies: 100 gpm for 30 minutes. b. Ordinary-Hazard Occupancies: 250 gpm for 60 to 90 minutes. 1.6 SUBMITTALS A. General Submission Requirements: 1. Contractor shall submit the following items to the Architect. Submittals shall be prepared in accordance with contract specifications, NFPA and the VUSBC Complete fire protection shop drawings, hydraulic calculations and product data shall be reviewed and approved by the A/E of Record prior to submission to BCOM for final approval of conformance with the Codes and Standards. B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include rated capacities, operating characteristics, electrical characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories. All equipment submitted must be UL listed and FM approved for its intended use. Evidence of such listings and approvals must be evident on the product data sheets submitted. Data shall be submitted for each type of product specified in Part 2 of this Section. Datasheets that include multiple products or multiple product part or model numbers shall be clarified to indicate the exact products to be utilized for this specific project. Products to be submitted include, but are not limited to, 1. Piping materials, including sprinkler specialty fittings. 2. Pipe hangers, attachments and supports. 3. Valves, including listed fire-protection valves, unlisted general-duty valves, and specialty valves and trim. 4. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. C. Shop Drawings: For wet-pipe sprinkler systems. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. Include full sprinkler head and piping layout, including piping elevations, hanger locations, hanger details, hydraulic information, building sections, details, etc., as required and prepared according to NFPA 13 section Working Plans. 4 1. Comprehensive plan view layouts and details, elevations and sections of the system piping. Indicate the location of piping in relation to the ceiling layout, showing pipe lengths and sizes, hanger locations and indicated all sprinkler locations coordinated with other ceiling components. 2. Hydraulic calculations in accordance with NFPA 13, utilizing the new contractor performed water supply flow test results. 3. Ceiling heights of all ceilings shall be indicated on the shop drawings. 4. Full height building section, including routing of sprinkler piping, shall be indicated on the shop drawings. 5. Shop drawings and hydraulic calculations shall be based on a coordinated set of sprinklers and sprinkler piping. Sprinkler locations and all sprinkler piping locations and elevations shall be coordinated with ductwork, piping, conduit, soffits, building structure, etc., prior to the first shop drawing submission. D. Delegated-Design Submittal: For sprinkler systems indicated to comply with performance requirements and design criteria, shop drawings and hydraulic calculations shall be signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation prior to their submission to the A/E. E. Coordination Drawings: Sprinkler systems, drawn to scale, on which the following items are shown and coordinated with each other, using input from installers of the items involved: 1. Domestic water piping. 2. Compressed air piping. 3. HVAC hydronic piping. 4. HVAC Ductwork and Equipment. 5. Electrical Panels and Conduit. 6. Items penetrating finished ceiling include a. Lighting fixtures. b. Air outlets and inlets. c. Fire alarm devices. d. A/V devices. e. Access doors/panels. f. Soffits. g. Projectors and Projector Screens h. Other items not specifically listed. F. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer and professional engineer. G. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, including hydraulic calculations, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction (A/E and BCOM). 5 H. Welding certificates. I. Fire-hydrant flow test report. J. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping." Include the NFPA 24 flushing certificate prior to connecting the backflow preventor to the new underground water service. K. Field quality-control reports. L. Operation and Maintenance Data: For sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. 1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: 1. Installer's responsibilities include designing, fabricating, and installing sprinkler systems and providing professional engineering services needed to assume engineering responsibility. Base calculations on results of new contractor provided fire-hydrant flow test. Base calculations on results of fire-hydrant flow test performed within 12 months of contract award. a. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified professional engineer in fire protection. B. Welding Qualifications: Qualify procedures and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. D. NFPA Standards: Sprinkler system equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, design, installation, flushing and testing shall comply with 1. NFPA 13, 2010 Edition, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems." 2. NFPA 24, 2010 Edition, "Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances." 1.8 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of sprinklers with all other construction that penetrates ceilings, including light fixtures, fire alarm devices, HVAC equipment, access doors, A/V devices, partition assemblies, soffits, projectors, projector screens and any other item not specifically listed. 6 1.9 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS UNIVERSITY SERVICES ANNEX A. Operation and Maintenance Data: For sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Sprinkler Cabinets: Finished, wall-mounted, steel cabinet with hinged cover, and with space for minimum of six spare sprinklers plus sprinkler wrench. Include number of sprinklers required by NFPA 13 and sprinkler wrench. Include separate cabinet with sprinklers and wrench for each type of sprinkler used on Project. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PIPING MATERIALS A. Comply with requirements in "Piping Schedule" Article for applications of pipe, tube, and fitting materials, and for joining methods for specific services, service locations, and pipe sizes. 2.2 STEEL PIPE AND FITTINGS A. Standard Weight, Black Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53/A 53M, Type E Grade B. Pipe ends may be factory or field formed to match joining method. B. Schedule 10, Black-Steel Pipe: ASTM A 135 or ASTM A 795/A 795M, Schedule 10 in NPS 2.5 through 5; and NFPA 13-specified wall thickness in NPS 6 to NPS 10, plain end. C. Black Steel Pipe Nipples: ASTM A 733, made of ASTM A 53/A 53M, standard-weight, seamless steel pipe with threaded ends. D. Steel Couplings: ASTM A 865, threaded. E. Provide new control valves, backflow preventor, fire department connection and sprinkler header in the tool storage room. B. Perform new fire-hydrant flow test according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 291. Use results for system design calculations required in "Quality Assurance" Article. Report results promptly and in writing to the architect after completion of the flow test and prior to the first sprinkler system shop drawing submission. The fire-hydrant flow test as shown in the Contract Documents does not alleviate the contractor from performing their own flow test. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

16 3.2 PIPING INSTALLATION UNIVERSITY SERVICES ANNEX A. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with the Engineer before deviating from approved working plans. B. Piping Standard: Comply with requirements for installation of sprinkler piping in NFPA 13. C. Use listed fittings to make changes in direction, branch takeoffs from mains, and reductions in pipe sizes. D. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. E. Install flanges, flange adapters, or couplings for grooved-end piping on valves, apparatus, and equipment having NPS 2-1/2 and larger end connections. F. 17 3.3 JOINT CONSTRUCTION UNIVERSITY SERVICES ANNEX A. Install couplings, flanges, flanged fittings, unions, nipples, and transition and special fittings that have finish and pressure ratings same as or higher than system's pressure rating for aboveground applications unless otherwise indicated. B. Ream ends of pipes and tubes and remove burrs. Bevel plain ends of steel pipe. C. Remove scale, slag, dirt, and debris from inside and outside of pipes, tubes, and fittings before assembly. D. Flanged Joints: Select appropriate gasket material in size, type, and thickness suitable for water service. Join flanges with gasket and bolts according to ASME B31.9. E. Threaded Joints: Thread pipe with tapered pipe threads according to ASME B Cut threads full and clean using sharp dies. Ream threaded pipe ends to remove burrs and restore full ID. Join pipe fittings and valves as follows: 1. Apply appropriate tape or thread compound to external pipe threads. 2. Damaged Threads: Do not use pipe or pipe fittings with threads that are corroded or damaged. F. Steel-Piping, Roll-Grooved Joints: Roll rounded-edge groove in end of pipe according to AWWA C606. Assemble coupling with housing, gasket, lubricant, and bolts. Join steel pipe and grooved-end fittings according to AWWA C606 for steel-pipe grooved joints. 3.4 VALVE AND SPECIALTIES INSTALLATION A. Install listed fire-protection valves, trim and drain valves, specialty valves and trim, controls, and specialties according to NFPA 13 and authorities having jurisdiction. B. Install listed fire-protection shutoff valves supervised open, located to control sources of water supply except from fire-department connections. Install permanent identification signs indicating portion of system controlled by each valve. C. Install backflow preventers in potable-water-supply sources. 3.5 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION A. Install sprinklers in suspended ceilings as shown on the drawings and in the center of the acoustical ceiling tiles in both directions. Install all sprinklers utilizing return bends from the branchlines to the sprinklers. WET-PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

18 3.6 FIRE-DEPARTMENT CONNECTION INSTALLATION A. Install yard-type fire-department connections in concrete slab support. Comply with requirements for concrete in Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete." B. Install two protective pipe bollards on sides of each fire-department connection. Comply with requirements for bollards in Section "Metal Fabrications." C. Install automatic (ball drip) drain valve at each check valve for fire-department connection. 3.7 PENETRATIONS A. Fire-Barrier Penetrations: Maintain indicated fire rating of walls, partitions, ceilings, and floors at pipe penetrations. Seal pipe penetrations with firestop materials and utilize a UL-listed firestop assembly for each penetration. B. Smoke Penetration Sealing: Fill the void opening around the item penetrating the wall with a noncombustible material such as mineral wool or another listed fill-void material. The fill void material shall have a coating of sealant applied and smoothened to close any gaps. The sealant shall be non-combustible or have a Class A flame spread combustibility rating. 3.8 IDENTIFICATION A. Install labeling and pipe markers on equipment and piping according to requirements in NFPA 13 and Section Identification For Fire-Suppression Piping and Equipment". 3.9 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform all required pre- and final tests and inspections per the Virginia State Fire Marshal, BCOM, JMU and NFPA 13 requirements. B. Contractor shall be responsible for coordinating all pre- and final tests and inspections with the Virginia State Fire Marshal, BCOM, JMU and the project manager. C. Tests and Inspections: 1. Leak Test: After installation, charge systems and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until no leaks exist. 2. Flush, test, and inspect sprinkler systems according to NFPA 13, "Systems Acceptance" Chapter. 3. Perform a forward flow backflow preventor test at system design flow. Record pressures upstream and downstream of the backflow preventor. 4. Energize circuits to electrical equipment and devices. 5. Coordinate with fire-alarm tests. Operate as required. 19 D. Sprinkler piping system will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections. E. Prepare test and inspection reports CLEANING A. Clean dirt and debris from sprinklers. B.
